Sunday, June 12, 2005 Margaret Cleland Margaret Cleland, 93, of Ubly, passed away away Thursday, June 9, 2005, at her home after a long illness. She was born on April 20, 1912 at home in Sanilac County to Ernest and Annie (Nicol) Pelton. She married Alexander Cleland on May 26, 1933 in Peck. He died May 21, 1970. Margaret was a true pioneer. She did what had to be done on the family's Centennial Farm. She would put up fencing, pour concrete, work in the fields, do necessary carpentry work; whatever needed to be done, Margaret did it. In later years, as she became wheelchair bound, she still continued to run her household and manage beautiful gardens. Margaret loved her vegetable and flower gardens and enjoyed sewing. She is survived by her children, Robert Cleland, of Cheboygan, Jean Osentoski Cleland, of Cass City; grandchildren, William Cleland and his wife, Lori, Robert Cleland, David Matthews and his wife, Laurie, Mark Matthews and his wife, Chris, Stacey Lehman and her husband, Dennis; great grandchildren, AJ Cleland, Heather Cleland, Caroline Lehman, Tracey Popham, David Matthews, Jeremy Matthews, Elizabeth Matthews; special niece, Carol Laming, of Ubly; sister, Naomi Wallace, of Cass City; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Jack Pelton and Frank Pelton; brother-in-law, Raymond Wallace. Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. today, June 12, 2005, in the Kranz Funeral Home with Rev. Finkbeiner, 45, of Cass City, died unexpectedly on Friday, June 10, 2005, at his home. He was born August 8, 1959 in Cass City to Donald A. and Judith (Helwig) Finkbeiner. He married Deborah Putman. Jeff served in the U.S. Navy for eight years on submarines and fast-attack ships. He was a rescue diver during the Lebanon crisis. He worked for Simpson Excavating, Plastech and Thumb Welding. He was an artist carving decoys and ships. He loved fishing, hunting and riding motorcycles. Jeff is survived by his wife, Deborah, of Middleburg, Florida; his father, Donald H. Pomerantz, 86, formerly of Port Hope and Harbor Beach, passed away on Friday, June 10, 2005, in Delmar Gardens of Overland Park, Kansas. Born on February 26, 1919, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Susan (Bruce) Perdue. On January 1, 1940, Rose and Walter Pomerantz were united in marriage in Harbor Beach. Walter preceded her in death on January14, 1994. She was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Port Hope and the Port Hope Retirees Club. Surviving are her children, Marilyn Wendt, of Port Hope, Melvin Pomerantz and his wife, Edna, of Westland, Alvin Pomerantz and his wife, Mary, of Shawnee, Kansas, Lorraine Thaete and her husband, Lee, of Shawnee, Kansas, Allen Pomerantz and his wife, Mary, of Blaine, Washington, Roland Pomerantz, of Federal Way, Washington, Ronald Pomerantz and his wife, Ruth, of Maple Valley, Washington, Ruth Herman and her husband, Chuck of Linwood, Kansas; 19 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; four step grandchildren; seven step great grandchildren; two sisters, Leona Muter, of Frankenmuth, and Susan Novak, of Port Austin; a brother, Thomas Perdue and his wife, Helen, of Minden City. David Scharich Sr. David Scharich Sr., 82, of Unionville, died Friday morning, June 10, 2005, at HealthSource of Saginaw following a 5-month illness. He was born December 12, 1922 in Saginaw, son of the late Casper and Lydia (Baker) Scharich. He was united in marriage to Mary Jane Fjerstad on March 22, 1947 in Angola, Indiana. She preceded him in death on January 31, 2004. Dave had been a master carpenter at an early age and also farmed in the Unionville area for many years. Later he was employed at Sebewaing Industries for 18 years as plant superintendent before retiring January 4, 1985. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Unionville; also the B.P.O.E. and the Bay City F. O. E. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and loved being with his family - especially his grandchildren and great- grandchildren. Surviving are two daughters and three sons, Deborah Carpenter and her husband, Rich, of Saginaw, David Scharich, Jr. and his wife, Laura, of Sebewaing; Regina Schwark and her husband, Kevin, of Bay City, Duane Scharich and his wife, Peggy, of Unionville; Gregory Scharich and his wife, Sharon, of Midland; 12 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one sister, Amelia Simmons, of Bay City; four nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one sister, Lydia Schember; and one brother, Casper Scharich. Edna Wing Edna Margaret Wing, 97, of Pigeon, passed away on Saturday, June 11, 2005, at Courtney Manor in Bad Axe. She was born in Winsor Township on May 19, 1908, daughter of the late Samuel and Bertha Mary (Gebauer) Faist. On March 8, 1947, she was united in marriage to Edward O. Wing of Cass City. He preceded her in death on May 29, 2004. Mrs. Wing was a homemaker throughout her lifetime. She attended Salem United Methodist Church in Pigeon. She is survived by a daughter, Cathy Krohn, and her husband, Terry W., of Elkton; two sons, Clark Faist, of Pigeon, and Terry L. Wing, of Kansas, Oklahoma; five grandchildren, Jeff Faist and his wife, Heidi, Tammy Nutt and her husband, Mike, Scott Krohn and his wife, Nancy, Steven Krohn and his wife, Kelly, and Cheryl Krohn; 13 great-grandchildren, Stephanie (Siewert) Kretzschmer, Kelly Siewert, Michael Siewert, Aaron Faist, Amanda Faist, Jeremy Siewert, Taylor Krohn, Courtney Siewert, Shelby Krohn, Brooke Krohn, Ethan Krohn, Lauren Krohn and Katey Krohn; several nieces and nephews. Monday, June 13, 2005 Andrew Joseph Gusa Mr. Andrew Joseph Gusa, 74, of Minden City, passed away Sunday evening, June 12, 2005, at his home under hospice care. He was born on July 22, 1930 in Sand Beach Township to the late Michael and Josephine (Gentner) Gusa. He married Lucille Patricia Bouverette on October 24, 1953 in a ceremony presided over by Fr. Dudek at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Port Austin. Andy attended East Huron Country School through the eighth grade and was an altar boy at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Helena until he was 21. He farmed for his parents and worked for Wagner Ready Mix. He was employed at Deckerville Die Form for 31 years and also did grass cutting. He lived in the Helena area for 18 years before moving to Minden City. He was a parishioner at St. Mary Catholic Church, where he was an usher and a member of the St. Mary's Men's Club. He also was a member of the Rapson Sportsman's Club. He played league softball until he was 64 and then he umpired. He bowled, and hunted for deer, fox, turkeys, pheasants, and bear. He fished for perch and suckers. Andy was well known for his jerky, pepper stick, fish smoking, and wine and sausage making. He always had a big garden. He played euchre and loved to ride the bus to the casino. Andy is survived by his wife, Pat, of Minden City; two sons, Richard Gusa and his wife, Annette, of Harbor Beach, and Andy Gusa, Jr. and his wife, Jeanne, of Ubly; three daughters, Margaret Howard, of Palms, Linda Queen, of Joplin, Mississippi, and Gloria Aldis and her husband, Howard, of Bad Axe; 16 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; five sisters, Anna Klee, of Harbor Beach, Marie Booth and her husband, Ken, of Warren, Catherine Leblong and her husband, Thomas, of Dearborn, Irene Scoviac, of Harbor Beach, and Stella Lentz and her husband, Ed, of Rochester; and one sister-in-law, Lauretta Gusa, of Harbor Beach. Andy was preceded in death by one daughter, Shirley Ann; two sons, Donald and Joseph Gusa; one sister, Theresa Romzek; and two brothers, Frank and James Gusa. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, June 15, 2005, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Parisville. The Rev. Ann Empkie Ann Empkie, 72, of Port Austin, died Saturday, June 11, 2005, at Cooper Covenant Hospital in Saginaw. She was born April 4, 1933 in Pigeon to the late Harry and Martha (Armbruster) Hercliff. Ann Hercliff and Fred Empkie were united in marriage in Pigeon on November 4, 1949. She was a member of the Kinde Presbyterian Church. Ann enjoyed sewing, knitting, reading, and watching the Detroit Pistons. She loved to follow her grandchildren's sporting activities. She is survived by her husband, Fred; one daughter, Linda Yaroch and her husband, Ozzie, of Kinde; one son, Paul Empkie and his wife, Nancy, of Port Austin; six grandchildren, Jeffrey, Kimberly, and Michael Yaroch and Scott, Jennifer and Brian Empkie; one cousin, Helen Young, of Elkton; and several nieces and nephews. Ann was preceded in death by four brothers, Robert, Earl "Jim," William, and Richard. Tuesday, June 14, 2005 Helen Kretschmer-Meyer Helen Kretschmer-Meyer, 87, of Pigeon and formerly of Saginaw, passed away Friday, June 10, 2005, at Scheurer Long Term Care in Pigeon. She was born in Saginaw on October 7, 1917, the daughter of the late Alex Louis and Marie (Duberville) Picard. She was married to Charles H. Kretschmer Jr., who predeceased her. She later married Robert Preston Davis, now deceased, and then married Robert Meyer, who also predeceased her. Surviving are three daughters, Helen Louise Pearce, of Troy, Kathleen Ann Bertrand, of Santa Cruz, California, and Cynthia Clabuesch and her husband, David, of Sand Pointe; six grandchildren, Natalie Picard Pearce, Erik Charles Bertrand and his wife, Tammy, Elizabeth Christina Bertrand, Leif Marc Bertrand, Anna Christina Mortensen and her husband, George, and R. Marcus Potvin; and great-granddaughter, Isabella Marie Bertrand; several nieces, nephews and other relatives. She was predeceased by a daughter, Christine Marie Kretschmer; and her brothers and sisters. Edward Alex Sharbowski Edward Alex Sharbowski, 90, of Palms, passed away Monday, June 13, 2005, at the Sanilac County Medical Care in Sandusky. Edward was born on January 12, 1915 in Detroit, son of the late Fred and Sophia (Wojcik) Sharbowski. He married Gertrude Glaza on September 15, 1941 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Parisville. Ed and Gertrude were married 63 years. He lived in the Palms area for many years. He was a parishioner at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Palms. He was employed at Thompson Products in Detroit and CNO Railroad. He farmed in Palms for many years, retiring in 1979. Ed is survived by his wife, Gertrude, of Palms; one daughter, Marlene Peruski, of Palms; one son, Melvin Sharbowski, and his wife, Carol, of Palms; six grandchildren; 11 great- grandchildren; three great-great-granddaughters; one sister, Genevieve Monkvich, of Roseville; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Walter and Anthony Sharbowski; and one son-in-law, Eugene Peruski. Wednesday, June 15, 2005 Ann Elizabeth Patterson Ann Elizabeth Patterson, 84, of Pigeon, passed away Tuesday, June 14, 2005, at Home Sweet Home Retirement Manor in Pigeon. She was born in Detroit on November 1, 1920, daughter of the late William and Martha (Westphal) Eden. On September 21, 1940, she was united in marriage to Arnold G. Patterson. He preceded her in death on October 18, 1984. Mrs. Patterson was a homemaker throughout her lifetime, and for many years worked at Elsie's Coffee Shop in Pigeon. She enjoyed quilting, handwork, and flower gardening. She was formerly a member of the Caseville Senior Citizens. She was a faithful member of St. Francis Borgia Catholic Church in Pigeon, where she taught catechism for many years. She also was a former member of the Altar Society. She is survived by two daughters, Barbara S. Patterson, of South Lyon, and Elaine A. Hope and her husband, Arthur, of Munger; a son, Jim Patterson and his wife, Dee, of Caseville; six grandchildren, Mathew Patterson, Amy Cantrell and her husband, John, Bryon Graf and his wife, Mary, Casey Graf, Jon Patterson, and Shareef Patterson; two great-grandsons, Thomas Graf and Logan James Cantrell; a sister, Alberta Shelton, of Lake; two brothers, Albert Eden and his wife, Ruth, of Bay Port, and Robert Eden, of Dearborn; several nieces and nephews; and many friends. Memorials for Mrs. Patterson may be made to St. Francis Borgia Catholic Church or Scheurer Hospital. Thursday, June 16, 2005 Harvey B. Bowen Harvey B. Bowen, 79, of Green Valley, Arizona and former resident of Harbor Beach, went to his heavenly home on March 10, 2005. Harvey was born on July 30, 1925 in Charlevoix County, son of the late Irvie and Gertrude Bowen. He resided in that area until he graduated from Charlevoix High School in 1943 and joined the U.S. Navy. He served as a petty officer in the Hospital Corp from 1943-1946 and 1951-1952. Between times of Naval duty, he attended Michigan State College and graduated in 1950 with a bachelor of science, majoring in mathematics. While still a college student, he married Elizabeth (Beth) Clifford on January 1, 1949 in Wellston. After graduating from college, he taught math in Roseville, Central Lake and then taught high school math in Harbor Beach for 35 years. After retiring in 1991, he volunteered as a math tutor in the middle school in Harbor Beach and in Green Valley, Arizona as a winter resident. Harvey loved sports. He worked with Ray Noble coaching the Youth League Football teams for many years and was active in most of the school athletic events announcing the Harbor Beach football games for more than 30 years, scoring the home basketball games, and attending most other events. His own sporting activities were bowling, golf and sailing with his wife, Beth, as crew mate. Harvey was active in the First Presbyterian Church, serving as both senior high and adult Sunday school teacher. He was also active in the Adult Sunday school at Valley Presbyterian Church in Green Valley. He served on the Harbor Beach- Port Hope Regional Steering Committee for Bluewater ThumbYouth for Christ, and at one time he was on the county board. Harvey is survived by his wife of 56 years, Beth, of Green Valley, Arizona; sons, David, of Lakeville, Minnesota, and Phil and his wife, Cathy, of Harbor Beach; a sister, Katherine Cina, of Tacoma, Washington; brother, Fred and his wife, Sandy, of Clinton Township; a brother-in-law, John Clifford and his wife, Martha, of St. Louis, Missouri; two grandsons, Patrick Bowen and his wife, Aleaha, of Lansing, and Drew Bowen, of Harbor Beach; nieces and nephews as well as grand nieces and nephews. A service was conducted in Green Valley in March and a celebration of life service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 18, 2005, in the First Presbyterian Church in Harbor Beach with the Rev. Theresa Cutler officiating. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at the church. Memorials may be given to Bluewater Thumb Youth for Christ, Harbor Beach, First Presbyterian Church, the William Eick School Family Scholarship or the Alzheimer's Research Association. Friday, June 17, 2005 Arlene Lillian Peterson Arlene Lillian Peterson, 82, of Harbor Beach, passed away Thursday, June 16, 2005, at Harbor Beach Community Hospital. Arlene was born on February 11, 1923 in Kingston to the late John and Lillian (Silvernail) Van Horn. She then married Harold Peterson on August 13, 1946 in Kingston. Harold preceded her in death on April 17, 1998. Arlene was a member of the Harbor Beach Free Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School. She graduated from Central Michigan University in Mt. Pleasant. She was an elementary teacher of East Huron School, Swayze School, Adams School, Verona School, and retired from the Harbor Beach Schools in 1979. She was a member of the Gideon's Auxiliary and the Huron County Retired Teachers Association. She loved spending time with her grandchildren and gardening. She is survived by her children, James and Cheryl Peterson, of Ovid, Jerry and Sue Peterson, of Harbor Beach, Elaine and William Bierie, of Swanton, Ohio; brothers, Alvin Van Horn, of Fenton, and Francis Van Horn, of Florida; sisters, Naomi Barber, of Roscommon, and Geraldine Conley, of Caro; eight grandchildren; one great-grandchild. Margaret M. Reid Margaret M. Reid, 80, of Harbor Beach, passed away Friday, June 17, 2005, in Courtney Manor Nursing Center, Bad Axe. Born in Bayonne, New Jersey on July 18, 1924, she was the daughter of the late John and Delia (McDonald) Squires. Margaret and James Reid were united in marriage on July 19, 1942 in Bayonne, New Jersey. James preceded her in death on May 23, 1981. She was a member of Our Lady of Lake Huron Catholic Church in Harbor Beach where she sang for many years and was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary of Post No. 197 in Harbor Beach. Margaret is survived by her children, James Reid, of Cocoa Beach, Florida, Lana Riedel and her husband, Larry, of Harbor Beach, John Reid, of Lexington, Kentucky, Joe Reid, of Harbor Beach, and Margaret Baxter and her husband, Ruben, of Chelsea; eight grandchildren; 10 great- grandchildren; two brothers, Gerald and Francis; sisters, Dorothy, Barb, Delia, and Patti, all of New Jersey. She was preceded in death by a son, Harry Reid; three sisters, Kay, Josephine, and Ann; and by two brothers, Jackie and Joe. A funeral Mass will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Monday, June 20, 2005, in Our Lady of Lake Huron Catholic Church with Fr. Charlie Hammond officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. A parish vigil service will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday in the Ramsey Funeral Home, Harbor Beach, where visitation will be from 1 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Sunday, and from 10 a.m. until the time of services on Monday at the church. Irene M. Steinman Irene M. Steinman, 79, of Port Austin, died Thursday, June 16, 2005, at St. Mary's Hospital in Saginaw.
