Drews, 32, of Port Hope, passed away on Thursday, January 13, 2005, at Huron Medical Center in Bad Axe, following an apparent heart attack. He was born on October 6, 1972 in Harbor Beach, son of Edward A. and Sandra (Susalla) Drews. He married Ann Tice on July 2, 1999 in Bad Axe. He was employed by the Bad Axe Public Schools as a bus mechanic. Ed's greatest joys in life were his family, friends, and the challenge of fixing or building anything. Edward is survived by his wife, Ann Drews, of Port Hope; two daughters, Ashlyn and Abbigal Drews, of Port Hope; mother, Sandra Drews, of Bad Axe; mother-in-law, Marylou Tice, of Kinde; maternal grandmother, Rita Susalla, of Ruth; two sisters, Lynn Howard and her husband, Ken, of Troy, Tracey Miller and her husband, Randy, of Kinde; two brothers-in-law, Ernie Tice, of Kinde, Mark Tice and his wife, June, of Bad Axe; one sister-in-law, Liz Friedland, of Caseville; and several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and friends. His father, Edward A. Drews, preceded him in death on January 15, 1982. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. on Monday, January 17, 2005, at the Kaufman Funeral Home in Bad Axe with Fr. T.J. Fleming officiating. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery in Bad Axe. Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. until the time of service at 10 a.m. on Monday. Harold "Bud" Vernon Lankey Harold "Bud" Vernon Lankey, 81, of Caseville, died Friday, January 14, 2005, in his residence. He was born April 1, 1923 in Lansing to the late Harold and Madeline (Law) Lankey. Harold served as an officer in the U.S. Navy during World War II as a dive- bomber pilot in the Pacific Theater. Later, he worked for Pontiac Motors before retiring and moving to Caseville permanently in 1964. He owned the Huron Marina in Caseville and was active in the community, having served as Harbor Master at the Municipal Marina, Caseville Township Supervisor, past-president and charter member of the Caseville Kiwanis Club and as a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. He was a gifted artist and craftsman and he enjoyed building models, furniture, drawing, sculpting, flying and reading. He is survived by his daughters, Penny Reed and her husband, Rob, of Caseville, and Suzanne Lankey, of Brisbane, Australia; grandchildren, Ken Brendel, Amanda Brendel, Christopher Worchurst, Shelly Worchurst, Cory Reed and Andrew Reed; and great-grandchildren Kaine, Nicole, Peyton and Finn. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jacquelyn (nee Britten) on July 18, 2003. A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Saturday, January 22, 2005, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 7899 Crescent Beach Road, Caseville, with Pastor Jim Nihiser officiating. Memorials may be made to the church. Arrangements are being handled by the Champagne Funeral Chapel, Caseville. Monday, January 17, 2005 Daniel J. Horetski Daniel J. Horetski, 75, of Kinde, died Saturday, January 15, 2005, at St. Mary's Medical Center in Saginaw. He was born on November 21, 1929 in Dwight Township, son of the late Michael and Frances (Scoviac) Horetski. Daniel and Marie Watchoski were married on October 29, 1949. He was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church in Port Austin where he served as an usher for many years. Daniel worked all his life as a self-employed truck driver. Daniel is survived by his wife, Marie, of Kinde; three children, Gerald Horetski and his wife, Sheryl, of Kinde, Melvin Horetski and his wife, Sharon, of Harbor Beach, and Denise Laughman and her husband, Dennis, of Charlotte, North Carolina; six grandchildren, Todd Horetski, of Bay City, Scott Horetski and his fiancee, Lisa, of Filion, Bradley Gomoluch and his wife, Stephanie, of Saginaw, Amanda Gomoluch and her special friend, Gordon, of Port Huron, Michael Horetski, of Verona, and Shawn Horetski, of Saginaw. He is also survived by his brother, William Horetski and his wife, Wanda, of Linwood. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Eleanor Czerwinski and Dorothy Clancy. A Funeral Mass will be at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, January 19, 2005, at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Port Austin. Officiating will be the Rev. Robert Pare', pastor. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Church Cemetery in Dwight Township. Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday at the Knoblock Funeral Home in Kinde and from 11:30 a.m. until the time of the service on Wednesday at the church. There will be a vigil at 7 p.m. on Tuesday evening at the funeral home. Tuesday, January 18, 2005 Oren E. "Pat" Doyle Oren E. "Pat" Doyle, 93, passed away Saturday, January 15, 2005, in Sun City, Arizona following a brief illness. He was born July 13, 1912 in Grindstone City, son of Earl Patrick Doyle and Adelaide Everingham and grandson of the late John Doyle of Dublin, Ireland. His father was then a surfman in the Life Saving Service, one of the predecessors of the Coast Guard. He married Bernice Clara Schlichting in Port Huron on December 28, 1939. Pat graduated from Port Hope High School, attended Eastern Michigan College, and taught a one room school in Huron County in the 1930s. He was the first father drafted from the Detroit area in World War II and served as a radar man aboard the USS Conklin (DDE 439) in the Pacific theater. He joined National Manufacturing Company of Sterling, Illinois in 1946 as a sales representative ("drummer" he said), and moved to Caro in 1950 "to be nearer to the center of the territory." In Caro, he was a member of the session of the First Presbyterian Church and of its choir. He retired in 1977 after 31 years with National Manufacturing Company. An athlete and accomplished wing shot in his youth, sometime yachtsman in maturity, and lifelong avid golfer, he re-moved to Arizona in retirement where the golf courses, unlike Michigan's, are open year round. He was still "shooting his age" in his late 80s until the adverse effect of a surgical procedure on his "long game" led him to put up his clubs saying he had no regrets as he had "had the best of it." He is survived by his wife, Bernice; four children, Glenn and his wife, Mona, of Empire, Allan, of Seattle, Washington, Mary and Kathleen of Phoenix, Arizona; sister, Esther "Mrs. James" Dollefeld, of Sun City West, Arizona; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Virginia, Earline and Cheryl. He will be sadly missed and fondly remembered. Cremation has taken place. Memorials may be made to donor's favorite charity. Wednesday, January 19, 2005 – No obituaries reported Thursday, January 20, 2005 Carrie Ann Heilig Carrie Ann Heilig, 27, of Crittenden, Kentucky and formerly of the Sandusky area, died Monday, January 17, 2005, at St. Lukes Hospital - West in Florence, Kentucky. She was born May 28, 1977 in Deckerville, the daughter of Thomas and Fay (Miller) Heilig. She attended Sandusky Community Schools. Carrie moved to Kentucky a year and a half ago from this area. She is survived by her father, Thomas Heilig, of Kentucky; brothers, Michael Heilig and his wife, Gina, of Elkton, Bradley Heilig and his wife, Brandi, of Kentucky; grandmother, Virginia Kroetsch, of Minden City; boyfriend, B.J. Freyaldenhofen, of Sandusky; nieces and nephews, Lauren and Tori Heilig, of Bad Axe, Eric and Maxx Heilig, of Kentucky, and Nathan and Ryan Schulz, of Elkton; and several aunts and uncles. She was preceded in death by her mother, Fay Diane (Miller) Heilig; grandfather, Wilfred Kroetsch; and grandparents, Paul and Verna Miller. Funeral services will be conducted at 4 p.m. on Friday, January 21, 2005, at Marsh Funeral Chapel, Sandusky, with Fr. Charles Hammond officiating. Visitation will be conducted from 11 to 4 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Greenwood Cemetery in Sandusky. Memorials may be made to the family. Helene Eleanor Mendel Helene Eleanor Mendel, 83, of Sebewaing, died Wednesday morning, January 19, 2005, at Wyandotte Henry Ford Hospital following a long illness. She was born April 19, 1921 in Port Huron to the late Peter and Flora (Parker) Kivel and grew up in the Elkton/Pigeon area. On May 13, 1950, she was united in marriage to John F. Mendel in Monroe. They lived in the Lincoln Park area most of their married life. After his retirement in 1969, they moved to Rose City, returning to the Thumb in the mid-1980s. John preceded her in death on December 17, 1986. Helene moved back to Lincoln Park for awhile; then to Sebewaing in 1999. She always enjoyed being with her family and friends. Surviving are three children, Lloyd Geiger and his wife, Pam, of Brownstown, David Geiger and his wife, Sue, of Pigeon, and Nancy Yuchuck and her husband, Ken, of Trenton; 12 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Reatha Laurence and her husband, Frank, of Sebewaing, Doris Dickerson and her husband, Archie, of Harbor Beach, and Frieda Esch and her husband, Clayton, of Pigeon. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Donna Rideout; a son, Daniel Geiger; three brothers, Orville, Oscar, and Bill Kivel; and a sister, Janet Kivel. The funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Saturday, January 22, 2005, at the Champagne Funeral Chapel, Elkton. The Rev. Thurman Holmes, pastor of Downriver Baptist Church, Wyandotte, will officiate with burial in Elkland Township Cemetery, Cass City. Victor John Lewandowski Victor John Lewandowski, 60, of Pigeon, passed away suddenly on Tuesday, January 18, 2005, at Scheurer Hospital in Pigeon. He was born in Durham, North Carolina on February 1, 1944, son of Victor J. and Helen S. (Kossek) Lewandowski. He graduated from Osborn High School and the Detroit Business Institute. On November 7, 1964, he was united in marriage to Christina P. Skonieczny in Detroit at Lady Help of Christians Church. She survives him. Vic retired after working for Ford Motor Company for 20 years, and moved to Huron County. He was an avid bass fisherman and was a member of the Michigan Bass Federation and the Bass Anglers Sportsmans Society, as well as the Lake St. Clair Bass Anglers. He was a member at St. Roch Catholic Church in Caseville. In addition to Christina, his wife of more than 40 years, he is survived by a son, Mark A. Lewandowski, of Sterling Heights; a granddaughter, Heather Lewandowski; his mother, Helen S. Lewandowski, of Clinton Township; a sister, Carole Charney and her husband, Greg, of Addison Township; a nephew, Shane Gorski; and many in-laws. He was preceded in death by his father. A Mass of Christian burial will take place at 11 a.m. on Saturday, January 22, 2004, at St. Roch Catholic Church, Caseville. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. on Friday at Meyersieck-Bussema Funeral Home, Pigeon, and from 10 a.m. until the time of mass at 11 a.m. on Saturday at the church. Friday, January 21, 2005 Judith Raye Rocheleau Judith Raye Rocheleau, 64, of Cass City, passed away Thursday morning, January 20, 2005. She was born in Flint on August 8, 1940, the daughter of James and Mary (Louise) Hudson. On May 25, 1968, she married Robert Rocheleau. Judy had been a press operator with Snover Stamping Company for 25 years, and conducted the same position with EDM Company in Cass City. She enjoyed gardening and raising German shepherd dogs, and was a member of the Flint German Shepherd Club and the Thumb of Michigan Dog Club. Surviving besides her husband, Bob, are her daughter, Cindy Swartz and her husband, Jeff, of California; sons, Roland Hayward and his wife, Dawn, of Clarkston, and Scotty Hayward and his wife, Genia, of Lapeer; her step-father, Melvin Pohl, Sr.; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren; a brother, Melvin Pohl, Jr.; sister, Brenda Skosich and her husband, Frank, both living in Auburn Hills; mother-in- law, Viola Schiatone; and sister-in-law, Frances Wyant and her husband, Richard. Judy was preceded in death by her mother; a brother, Robert Hudson; and father-in-law, Victor Rocheleau. Funeral services will take place at 11 a.m. on Monday, January 24, 2005, at St. Agatha Catholic Church, Gagetown. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, from 3 to 8 p.m. on Sunday at Gagetown Funeral Chapel, and from 10 a.m. until the time of service on Monday at the church. Kendall Paul McDonald Mr. Kendall Paul McDonald, 46, of Houghton Lake and formerly of Bay City, passed away Friday, January 14, 2005, at Grayling Mercy Hospital. A funeral service will be 2 p.m. on Saturday, January 22, 2005, at the Zinger-Smigielski Funeral Home of Ubly. The Rev. T.J. Fleming, pastor of Our Lady of Lake Huron Catholic Church in Harbor Beach, will officiate. Burial will be in St. John Cemetery of Ubly in the spring. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until the time of service at 2 p.m. on Saturday at the funeral home. 1
