Lutz, 85, of Pigeon, passed away on Friday, April 15, 2005, at Scheurer Hospital in Pigeon following a brief illness. She was born August 5, 1919 in Kilmanagh, daughter of the late Otto and Alma (Thede) Kundinger. She was united in marriage to Raymond Lutz on April 27, 1941 at St. John Lutheran Church, Kilmanagh. He preceded her in death on September 27, 1992. Ethel was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, Kilmanagh, the Ladies Aid, Lutheran Laymen's League, also Friendly Neighbors Farm Bureau Group. She loved working outside, quilting, baking and especially being with her family and friends. Surviving are two daughters and their husbands, Janice Roestel and her husband, Leon, of Pigeon, and Donna Kretzschmer and her husband, Leon, of Pigeon; grandchildren and spouses, Tammy Armbruster and her husband, Jim, of Pigeon, Kevin Roestel and his wife, Pam, of Pigeon; Lloyd David Ziel, of Las Vegas, Nevada, Timothy Roestel and his wife, Jenny, of Owendale; Kenneth Ziel and his wife, Gina, of Caro, Dean Roestel and his wife, Marnie, of Mount Pleasant; Tom Ziel and his wife, Anne, of Pigeon, Tracy Schmitt and her husband, Scott, of Stafford, Virginia; great-grandchildren, Tricia Sample and her husband, Adam, Jason, Ryan and Kayla Armbruster, Stephanie, Jillian, Matt, Heather, Ken, Allison, Justin, Carter and Dillan Roestel, Caleb and Carson Schmitt, Bill and Alyssa Comai, Shannon and Ashley Ziel; one great-great-grandson, Aaron Sample; two sisters, Aldine Quick, of Sebewaing, and Beatrice Elenbaum, of Unionville; one brother-in-law, Edgar Lutz and his wife, Marion, of Sebewaing; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by one son-in-law, Lloyd Ziel; one brother, Walter Kundinger; sister-in-law, Esther Kundinger; two brothers-in-law, Glen Quick and Donald Elenbaum; and one sister, Eunice Kundinger. The funeral service will take place at 11 a.m. on Monday, April 18, 2005, at St. John Lutheran Church in Kilmanagh with Rev. Jonathan Meyer officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until 9 p.m. on Sunday at the Meyersieck-Bussema Funeral Home in Pigeon. She will lie in state from 10 a.m. until the time of service at the church on Monday. Memorials may be given to St. John Lutheran Church, Kilmanagh, or the American Cancer Society. Catherine M. Stanislaw Catherine M. Stanislaw, 87, of Harbor Beach, passed away on Thursday evening, April 14, 2005, in the Harbor Beach Community Hospital. Born in Detroit on October 10, 1917, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Catherine (Assenmacher) Dornoff. On January 1, 1940, Catherine and Joseph Stanislaw were united in marriage in Napoleon, Ohio. Joe preceded her in death on July 4, 1986. She was a former employee of the Metal Molding Company in Detroit from 1958 until 1980. Catherine and Joseph owned and operated the Horseshoe Motel and Cabins near Port Austin. She was a member of the Our Lady of Lake Huron Catholic Church in Harbor Beach. Surviving is a daughter, Carol Taus and her husband, Carl, of Harbor Beach; one grandson, Matthew Taus, of Harbor Beach; a sister, Judy Koths, of Taylor. Catherine was preceded in death by two brothers, John and George Dornoff. A funeral mass will be at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, April 18, 2005, at Our Lady of Lake Huron Catholic Church, Harbor Beach, with Fr. T.J. Fleming officiating. Visitation will be from 1 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Ramsey Funeral Home in Harbor Beach, and from 8:30 a.m. until the service time Monday at the church. There will be a rosary service at 3 p.m. today, and a parish vigil service at 7:30 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Rock Falls Cemetery. Frederick "Fritz" Schimmelpfenig Frederick James Schimmelpfenig, 78, of Caseville, passed away on Wednesday, April 13, 2005, at Longevity Care in Sandusky. He was born in Capac on September 18 1926, son of the late Samuel and Mabel (Schutzler) Schimmelpfenig. He was a graduate of Purdue University where he played football and graduated with an engineering degree. On July 8, 1950, he was united in marriage to Dorothy Ann Roskey in Capac. They spent their early years in Kodiak, Alaska where Fritz was stationed with the Navy. After leaving the Navy, he joined AC Spark Plug as a product engineer. He and Dot lived in Davison until he retired in 1986 and they moved to Caseville. He was active with the Davison and Caseville United Methodist churches. He especially enjoyed time with his granddaughter. He is survived by a daughter, Julie Edgar and her husband, Dr. William; beloved granddaughter, Elizabeth Edgar, of Fenton; brother, Roy Schimmelpfenig, of Wadsworth, Ohio; nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy, on October 4, 2004; and grandson, Michael Edgar. A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. on Monday, April 18, 2005, at the Meyersieck-Bussema Funeral Home in Pigeon with Rev. Margaret Passenger officiating. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. on Monday. Memorials may be made to the Methodist Children's Home Society. Monday, April 18, 2005 Paul Lutz Paul M. Lutz, 23, of Sebewaing, died peacefully Sunday morning, April 17, 2005, at his home. He was born on January 23, 1982 in Pigeon, son of William and Cynthia (Draschil) Lutz. He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Sebewaing. Paul loved tractors, farming, sports, and was an avid University of Michigan fan. He was very friendly and outgoing as a child. Surviving, in addition to his parents, are two sisters and one brother, Kimberly Birch and her husband, Jeff, of Essexville, Pamela Lutz, of Kalamazoo, David Lutz and his wife, Dana, of Sebewaing; grandparents, John and Martha Draschil and Edna Lutz, all of Sebewaing; one niece, Molly Sue Birch; and several aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Arnold Lutz. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, April 20, 2005, at Holy Family Catholic Church. Fr. John Weis will preside with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today, and from noon to 9 p.m. on Tuesday at Dinkel-Juengel Funeral Home in Sebewaing. Young, 80, of Elkton, died Saturday, April 16, 2005, at Sunny Acres Nursing Center while under hospice care with her family at her side. She was born on December 30, 1924 in Jackson to the late Alfred and Lulu (Van Epps) Peavey. On February 24, 1941, she was united in marriage to Louis A. Gottschalk in Jackson and farmed west of Bad Axe for 32 years. They parted in 1973 and Louis died of cancer on August 28, 1983. Marge married Milton Young on March 11, 1974 in Bad Axe and they farmed south of Elkton many years. She was a member of the Colfax Methodist Church, past president of the Huron County Historical Society from 1968 to 1974, and a member of the Elkton Historical Society. Marge enjoyed gardening, canning her vegetables and loved fishing. She also had a lot of fun growing, selling and giving away pumpkins from her pumpkin farm at Halloween. She is survived by her husband, Milton; two sons, Ronald Gottschalk and his wife, Harriet, of Hastings, Florida, Samuel Gottschalk and his wife, Susan, of Elkton; daughter, Gloria LeJeune and her husband, William, of Bad Axe; daughters-in-law, Sue Gottschalk and Bonnie Gottschalk, both of Bad Axe; 13 grandchildren, Marsha, Lori, Kimberly, Bill, Bob, Jennifer, Todd, Chrystal, Denise, Cheryl, Kim, Jim and Morgan; 14 great-grandchildren; and two great-great- grandchildren. Also surviving are her brother, Norris Peavey, of Lakeworth, Florida; and three sisters, Maxine Kettel, of Barryton, Monabelle Bryant, of Granite City, Illinois, and Jeanette Hall, of Monti, Utah. Preceding her in death are four sons, Louis Jr., Ralph, John and Alvin Gottschalk; and two sisters, Mildred Ellenwood and Marion Brookins. Tuesday, April 19, 2005 Erma Swartzendruber Erma Swartzendruber, 92, of Bay Port, passed away Sunday, April 17, 2005, at the Scheurer Hospital Long Term Care Unit in Pigeon. She was born in the family home in Bay Port on February 13, 1913, daughter of the late Daniel and Lydia (Reist) Schwartzentruber and was married to Edwin Swartzendruber on May 1, 1934. He preceded her in death on November 22, 1994. Mrs. Swartzendruber was a homemaker throughout her lifetime, enjoying quilting, cross-stitching, and reading. She also was an avid fisherman and along with her husband, Edwin, spent summers on Drummond Island and winters in Yuma, Arizona. She was a member of the Michigan Avenue Mennonite Church in Pigeon. She is survived by a son, Harold Swartzendruber and his wife, Louise, of Bay Port; a daughter, Jean Reich and her husband, Ray, of Midland; six grandchildren, Terry and Teresa Swartzendruber, Rod and Vicki Swartzendruber, Dan and Chris Swartzendruber, Dave and Adriana Swartzendruber, Amy and Michael Milacek, and Alan Reich; five great-grandchildren, Josh, Kerri, Rebecca, Curtis, and Jason; and several nieces and nephews. Tuckey, 94, of Cass City, died Monday, April 18, 2005, in Tendercare Nursing Facility after a long illness. She was born June 13, 1910 in Lake Odessa to Charles and Jeanette Graham (Ferguson) Doerr. She married Charles Luke Tuckey on November 9, 1927 in Cass City. He died March 28, 1996. Evelyn was a member of the Cass City United Methodist Church, the former Salem United Methodist Church and the Cass City United Methodist Women. She contributed six sons to the military and corresponded with them regularly, keeping every letter they wrote home. On her 50th wedding anniversary, Evelyn and her husband were presented honorary graduation certificates from Cass City Community Schools. Evelyn and Luke wintered 19 years in Florida, where they had many friends. Evelyn collected cups and saucers. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother and truly enjoyed her family. For their 50th wedding anniversary, they took a trip to Hawaii with most of the family members. Evelyn is survived by her children, Dorothy Mantey and her husband, Carl, of Port Austin, Charles Tuckey and his wife, Iris, of Sand Pointe, Eunice Kaufman and her husband, Donald, of Edwardsburg, Dr. Donald Tuckey and his wife, Kathlyn, of Frankenmuth, William Tuckey and his wife, Sylvia, of Frankenmuth, Robert Tuckey and his wife, Barbara, of Cass City, Roy Tuckey and his wife, Kathleen, of Cass City; 27 grandchildren; 47 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great- granddaughters; daughter-in-law, Dolores Tuckey, of Cass City; sisters-in-law, Ruth Doerr, of Saginaw, Mary Doerr, of Mayville, Olga Doerr, of Rhodes, Lanettia Tuckey, of Pontiac; brother-in-law, the Rev. Charles Vogel Charles Vogel, 74, of Deckerville, passed away Monday, April 18, 2005, at his home following an extended illness. Charles was born on September 1, 1930 in Minden City, son of the late Adolph and Adella (Messing) Vogel. He attended SS. Peter and Paul School in Ruth and joined the U.S. Air Force on November 17, 1951. While on leave on November 22, 1952, he married his sweetheart, Mary Jane Peruski, at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Palms. Following four years of service in California, Charles, Jane, and their sons, Charles Larry, and Ronald, moved back to Palms, where he dairy farmed for approximately 40 years, retiring in 1990. He enjoyed playing pinochle with his children, grandchildren, and many friends. In recent years, Charles and Jane traveled to Port Richey, Florida for the winter season where he enjoyed their second home and their friends. Charles was an avid television watcher and loved listening to polka music. Charles is survived by his wife of 52 years, Mary Jane, of Deckerville; three sons, Charles L. "Bill" Burkett, 37, of Bad Axe, passed away on Sunday, April 17, 2005, in Wharton, Texas from injuries sustained in a truck accident. He was born on May 15, 1967 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, son of Robert E. and Genevieve Ann (Lesoski) Burkett. He married Michelle Sageman on May 25, 2002 in Pigeon. He was a self- employed truck driver and had served in the U.S. Army. He is survived by his wife, Michelle Sageman, of Bad Axe; daughter, Miki Sageman, of Bad Axe; and thought of daughter, Crystal Osantoski, of Port Austin; parents, Robert and Genevieve Burkett, of Kinde; mother and father-in-law, Earl and Mary Sageman, of Elkton; paternal grandmother, Frances Riemke, of Atlanta; two brothers, Michael (Treasa) Burkett, and Timothy Burkett; one sister, Annemarie (Daniel) Sokalski, all of Kinde; brother-in-law Earl "Pinky" Sageman, of Gagetown; five sisters-in-law, Catherine (Jason) Osantowski, of Bad Axe, Amy Sageman, of Elkton, Wendy Sageman, of Bad Axe, and Kimberly Sageman, of Cass City, and Barbara Sageman, of Saginaw; and several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and very close friends. Foster Anthony C. Foster, 79, of Caseville, passed away Monday, April 18, 2005, at home after a long illness while under hospice care. Born in Ilford, England on April 30, 1925 to the late Alfred and Emma (Davis) Foster, he grew up in Greenwich/Maze Hill (London), England, enjoying the freedom of a lad on a bike. He was a six-time London champion swimmer and preparing to represent England in the 1940 summer Olympics, but World War II put an end to his Olympic dreams. Being a big kid for his age, his signing up for the Royal Marines was never questioned. However, his parents objected, then relented and gave him permission as an under-age recruit, because he was safer in the service than at home during the London blitz. Tony was involved in the rescue of soldiers from Dunkirk, aiding President Tito of Yugoslavia in crossing the German lines to Malta for the Malta Conference and back again, and the preparation of the beaches Sword and Juno at Normandy for the invasion on June 6, 1944. He was involved in many more commando missions throughout Europe while serving under Prince Phillip of Greece. After serving from 1939 to 1972, Tony went on to serve as Master of Arms on the Queen Mary and the Frankonia. He was First Officer of luxurious private yachts in the Mediterranean. Tony was heavily involved in the Sea Cadets, preparing boys that were interested in joining the Royal Navy in the future. During this time he met Lord Louis Mountbatten, supreme commander of the Pacific commonwealth forces in the far east. He was married to Janice M. Hyzer on December 9, 1972 at Hayes United Methodist Church north of Pigeon. She survives him. He was active with his daughters in school and the Girl Scouts. In addition to his wife, Janice, he is survived by twin daughters, Moira Foster, of Caseville, and Aline Buzzard and her husband, Kevin, of Bay City; a son, Adrian Foster and his wife, Sue, of Cowes, Isle of Wright, England; three grandchildren, Toni Foster, Christopher Buzzard, and Christina Buzzard; his in-laws, Robert and Frieda Hyzer, of Caseville; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a sister, Pamela. The funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Friday, April 22, 2005, at the Meyersieck-Bussema Funeral Home in Pigeon with the Rev. Douglas E. Mater, pastor of Hayes United Methodist Church, officiating. Cremation will follow. Ramon Matuszewski, 74, of Midland and formerly of Pinconning, passed away unexpectedly Tuesday, April 19, 2005, at his home. He was born in Mt. Forest Township on October 22, 1930 to the late Mitchell and Donna (Pudlik) Matuszewski. He was class president and valedictorian of the class of 1949 at Pinconning Area High School. He attended St. Mary's and St. John's Provincial Seminaries and was a graduate of St. Thomas Aquinas, Chapman College, LaVerne College, and the University of Michigan. He was ordained June 1, 1957 at St. Hyacinth Church in Bay City by the Most Rev. Stephens S. Woznick. Fr. Ray served an associate pastor at several parishes and then served as a Chaplain in the U.S. Navy for 20 years retiring with the rank of commander. He returned to the diocese in 1984 and served as pastor at Shepard & Winn parishes and St. Michael Parish from 1991 until his retirement in July 2001. Fr. Ray was still active as a senior priest and always was most willing to be of service in substituting in parishes. He is survived by his two brothers, Edmund Matuszewski and his wife, Mary Ellen, of Auburn, and Arthur Matuszewski and his wife, Judy, of Frankenmuth; a sister, Eleanore Malone and her husband, Victor, of Midland; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a sister and his parents. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 23, 2005, at St. Michael Catholic Church with Bishop Robert J. Carlson presiding. The rite of interment will take place at St. Agnes Cemetery. Visitation for Fr. Ray will be from 3 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, from 1 to 9 p.m. on Friday and from 9 a.m. until the time of services on Saturday at St. Michael Church. Wilkowski, 88, of Deckerville and formerly of Port Hope, passed away Tuesday, April 19, 2005, at Autumnwood of Deckerville. Born in Detroit on July 27, 1916, Art was the son of the late Frank and Agnes (Abraham) Wilkowski. Art was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army in the European, African and Middle Eastern Theaters. On December 16, 1968, Art and Mary Lamont were united in marriage in Bad Axe. Art was a rural mail carrier for 42 years retiring in 1980 from the Port Hope Post Office. He was a member of Our Lady of Lake Huron Catholic Church and a member of the AmVets Post 115 of Port Hope. Being an avid golfer, he was a former member of the Verona Hills Golf Club and he enjoyed bowling. Surviving are his wife, Mary Wilkowski, of Deckerville; two sons, Dennis A. Wilkowski and his wife, Connie, of Port Hope, and David Wilkowski and his wife, Karen, of Harbor Beach; two step-sons, Wayne Duncan, of Dearborn Heights, and Kenneth Duncan, of St. Clair; and a brother, Charles Wilkowski, of Sterling Heights; and three grandchildren.
