"Harvey" Nielson, 70, of Harbor Beach, passed away Thursday, November 24, 2005, in Port Huron Hospital. Born in Grant on February 2, 1935, he was the son of the late Alvin and Jeanette (Cook) Nielson. Harvey was a retired employee of the Nutrasweet Company in Harbor Beach, retiring in 1995 after working for 21 years. In Grant High School, Harvey was active in sports lettering in three different sports. He was a former Little League coach and was on the golf and bowling leagues in Harbor Beach. He also enjoyed fishing and playing basketball. On December 9, 1978, Harvey and Joyce Kennedy were united in marriage in Forestville. He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Joyce Kennedy, of Harbor Beach; his children Niel J. Nielson and his wife, Diane, Stephanie Marie Nielson, and Julie Ann Brandow and her husband, Rick; also surviving are a brother, Don Nielson and his wife, Peggy; and six step-children, Jim Kennedy, Glenna Douglas, William Kennedy and his wife, Ilene, Ann Simmons and her fiancé, Don Goetze, Steven Kennedy and his wife, Rebecca, and John Kennedy and his wife, Anne; four grandchildren; 17 step-grandchildren and 12 step-great-grandchildren. Monday, November 28, 2005 Elmer C. Ball Elmer C. Ball, 87, of Mio and formerly of Cass City, passed away on Saturday, November 26, 2005, at St. Joseph Hospital in Tawas. He was born June 12, 1918 at home in Grant Township to John S. and Mary (Gillis) Ball. He married Beverly Kowalsky on April 16, 1955 in Pontiac. Elmer and Bev owned and operated B-Line Charter Bus Company for over 30 years until his retirement in 1975. Elmer worked part time for Trailways Bus Company after he retired. They wintered in Florida eventually settling in Punta Gorda after retiring. Elmer enjoyed deer hunting. He and Bev enjoyed each others company, working and playing together. Elmer is survived by his wife, Beverly; children, Robert J. Ball, of Riverside, California, Ronald D. (Judy) Ball, of National City, Karen K. (Larry) Eaton, of Flushing; grandchildren, Jeff Ball, Ronald Ball, Mark Ball, Carl Ball, Michael Eaton, Christopher Ball, Julie Switzonbay, Kim Perez, Tina Fivek; great grandchildren, Taylor, Chad, Keegan, Jacob, Chelcie, Gabriella, Kalvin, Nick, Ryan, Daniel, Joseph, Eric, Michael; many nieces and nephews. Henshall, 34, of Little Egg Harbor, New Jersey and formerly of Bad Axe and Atco, New Jersey, passed away on Friday, November 25, 2005. Stephen graduated from Edgewood High School, Class of 1989. He will be remembered as being a sports enthusiast and avid hockey fan. He played for the Gladiators Hockey Club and also was a referee and board member for Huron County Youth Hockey. He was the beloved son of Lloyd and Sandra (nee Pollitt) Henshall of Little Egg Harbor. Steven is survived by his nephew, Brian Hutchison; his aunts, uncle, and cousins, as well as his faithful companion, Mac. He also is survived by his dear friend, Miriam Berevich and her daughter, Devon. He was predeceased by sisters, Stacey and Lauren Henshall. William Clark McCaslin William Clark McCaslin, 90, of Port Austin, died Saturday, November 25, 2005, at the Huron County Medical Care Facility in Bad Axe. He was born October 28, 1915 in Cass City, son of the late Charles and Emma (Seeger) McCaslin. He married Eleanor Brzezinski on February 15, 1941 in Ubly. She preceded him in death on April 25, 2001. Clark graduated from Cass City High School in 1933 and worked as a barber in his father's barbershop for three years before moving to the Detroit area to work for Ford Motor Company. Clark and Eleanor moved to Port Austin from Southfield in the early 1970s upon retiring after 30 years from Ford. They spent their winters in Fort Myers, Florida until 1993. Clark was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. He served in England during World War II. He was a member of the American Legion Frank Horetski Post No. 499 in Port Austin. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, golf, and playing cards. Tuesday, November 29, 2005 Olive G. Booms Olive G. Booms, 96, of Bad Axe, passed away Sunday, November 27, 2005, at her home. She was born December 18, 1908 in Filion to the late Posco and Nora Mae (Benson) Sharette. She marred Wilbur Simons in 1930 and he preceded her in death in 1954. She remarried in 1970 to Roman Booms. He preceded her in death in 1982. She worked at Mary's Steakhouse for a number of years. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Olive enjoyed fishing, gardening, canning, and dancing. She was able to drive until the age of 95. She is survived by one daughter, Patricia A. Burial will be in Colfax Township Cemetery. James B. Gardner James B. Gardner, 67, of Long Beach, Mississippi and a former resident of Bad Axe, died Sunday, November 27, 2005, at the Hospice House in Lansing. He was born September 22, 1938 in Grand Rapids to the late Rev. William B. and Helen Gardner. On October 8, 1988. he was united in marriage to Victoria Brandon. After graduating from Central High School in Traverse City in 1956, Mr. Gardner trained as a medical laboratory specialist in the U.S. Air Force, where he served from 1956-1960. He then attended Michigan State University, where he graduated in 1964 with a B.A. in hospital management. He was employed with the St. Lawrence Hospital in Lansing from 1960 to 1966, where he worked as a laboratory technician and registrar. From 1966 to 1970, he worked at Saginaw General Hospital and from 1971 to 1975, he worked at Hackley Hospital in Muskegon, both in the position of assistant administrator. From 1975 to 1980, he was employed with Schoolcraft Memorial Hospital in Manistique as an administrator. He then went on to work at Huron Memorial Hospital in Bad Axe. After his retirement as President and CEO in 2000, he spent his retirement in Long Beach, Mississippi, where he lived for two years prior to Hurricane Katrina. Mr. Gardner was a past president of the Bad Axe Rotary Club, previous board member of Verona Hills Golf Club, the Bad Axe School District Improvement Team and previous coordinator of the Thumb Area Hospital Improvement Team. He served as a Chairman of the Hospital Council of East Central Michigan. He was a previous board member of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan and Board of Trustee and Treasurer of Insight, Inc. Mr. Gardner also served as chairman of the Michigan Hospital Association and as a board member and vice chairman of the Michigan Hospital Association Insurance Company. In 2001, he received the Resolution of Meritorious Service award, the highest accolade from the Michigan Hospital Association, for outstanding contributions in the healthcare industry. Due to his love for the game of golf, he worked for the bridges Golf Course in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi, up until his illness. He is survived by his wife, Victoria, of St. Johns; one daughter, Pamela Foster and her husband, John, of St. Johns; one granddaughter, Lissa Foster; one brother, David Gardner and his wife, Lois, of Portage; nieces, Pat Pearson and her husband, Trevor, of Bensalem, Pennsylvania, and Elaine Holland and her husband, Doug, of Florissant, Missouri; and nephews, Steve Gardner and his wife, Cheryl, of Apopka, Florida, and Blake Brandon, of Waterford. He was preceded in death by his sister-in-law, Joan Gardner. A memorial service will be take place at 11 a.m. on Friday, December 2, 2005, at the First Baptist Church in Bad Axe; the Rev. She was born on January 24, 1915 in Dwight Township, daughter of the late Frank and Martha (Bodis) Krajenka. Mary was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church in Port Austin where she was also a member of the Holy Rosary Sodality. She enjoyed spending her summers gardening and her winters making quilts. Mary is survived by her sister, Regina Gottschalk, of Pigeon; her brother, Edward (Rita) Krajenka, of Kinde; 14 nieces and nephews, Jim Krajenka, Dennis Krajenka, Elaine Field, Frances Szymanski, Virginia Gottschalk, Pauline Booms, Alice Neesley, Giselle McSwain, Donna Clifton, Monica Krajenka, Gerard Krajenka, Geralyn Krajenka, Larry Krajenka, and Kevin Krajenka. He was born February 16, 1935 at home in Ubly to the late John and Stella (Pionk) Michalski. Ronald Michalski and Mary Smithers were united in marriage on December 5, 1981. He graduated in 1955 from Ubly High School. He was employed with Active Industries for 35 years until his retirement in 1997. He enjoyed playing cards, deer hunting, fishing, and riding in his golf cart. VanWagoner, Jr., 80, of Harbor Beach, passed away Sunday, November 27, 2005, at Port Huron Hospital. Born in Oxford on June 12, 1925, he was the son of the late Ralph N. and Grace M. (Hempstead) VanWagoner, Sr. Ralph was a veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Benjamin Franklin. He was an Eagle Scout in his youth and enjoyed carving duck decoys, playing his trumpet, especially big band music, and hunting and fishing. Ralph was a former member of the Oxford United Methodist Church, Duck`s Unlimited, and was a member of the Steelheaders Club. Surviving are his wife, Beatrice VanWagoner, of Harbor Beach, two sons, Joseph P. VanWagoner and is wife, Joy, of Ponce de Leon, Florida, and Terry VanWagoner and his wife, Beverly, of Warren; three step-children, James Moen, of Hale, Esther Gaines, of Germantown, Maryland, and Thomas Moen, of Hale; 16 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Eagle Lacy E. Eagle, 62, of Lapeer, passed away on Sunday, November 27, 2005. He was born April 3, 1943 to Vernon and Lorine (Moody) Eagle in Danese, West Virginia. Lacy is survived by his wife of 38 years, Rosemarie; daughter, Rosemarie (Nick) Scramlin; son, Lacy (Teresa) Eagle; grandchildren, Christopher, Alyssa, Savanna, and Dakota; two brothers, Ernie Eagle and Delbert (Sandy) Eagle; two sisters, Patricia (Dave) Walters and Pansy Pack; and one sister-in-law, Carla Eagle. He was preceded in death by his parents, Vernon and Lorine Eagle, and two brothers, Lawrence and David Eagle. Thursday, December 1, 2005 Margaret Baldwin Margaret Baldwin, 80, a five-month resident of Pigeon and formerly of the Washington Township, Almont, and Utica areas, passed away on Monday, November 28, 2005, at Scheurer Hospital in Pigeon. Margaret was born on December 5, 1924, in Windsor, Ontario, the daughter of Herbert and Sybil (Humphries) Price. She married Robert Baldwin on June 4, 1949 at St. George's Church in Walkerville, Ontario. Her hobbies included reading, writing letters to her family and friends, and being with her grandchildren. Margaret is survived by her husband, Robert; children, Margo (Dan) Reinhold, of Scottsdale, Arizona, Sheila (Bob) Schafer, of Elkton, Laurie Baldwin, of St. Clair Shores, Elayne (Jeff) Sorna, of Mount Clemens, and Stacia (Ken) Campbell, of Almont. She also is survived by grandchildren, Nicole, Ian, Andrea, Nathan, Lucas, and McKenna; along with great-grandchildren, Katelyn, Mark, Conner, and Molly. Sally Boss Sally Boss, 85, of Bad Axe, passed away Wednesday, November 30, 2005, at Tendercare in Cass City following an extended illness. She was born on March 5, 1920 in Posen, daughter of the late Joseph and Frances Dzucola. She married Harold Greyerbiehl, who preceded her in death. She married William Boss on December 26, 1956 in Cass City. He preceded her in death on October 13, 1993. She is survived by two sons, Edward Greyerbiehl, of Lake Orion, and William (Loretta) Greyerbiehl, of Bad Axe; five daughters, Diane (Larry) Fields, Mary Anne Greyerbiehl, of Bad Axe, Elizabeth Laycock, of Danville, Indiana, Barbara (Paul) Armstrong, of Saginaw, and Patricia (Rick) McCoy, of Bad Axe; one sister, Clara (Bob) McCracken, of Yale; 15 grandchildren, and several great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one sister, Helen Monthei, and six brothers, Harry, Walter, Dave, Bill, Leo, and Eddie Dzucola. Bernice Crawford Bernice Crawford, of Frankenmuth (Independence Village), passed away Wednesday, November 30, 2005. Born Bernice Nash in Detroit in 1905, she spent most of her life in Huron County, where she attended grade school in Grindstone City and was a graduate from Bad Axe High School in 1923. After attending Western State Teacher's College in Kalamazoo, where she received a two-year life certificate, she earned a B.A. degree from Central Michigan University in Mt. Pleasant. Schools in which she taught were Huron City, Port Hope, Jackson, Owendale, Elkton, and Unionville. In 1931, she married Duncan Crawford who preceded her death in 1980. In 1982, she moved from their farm home in Gagetown to Independence Village, a retirement home in Frankenmuth. While there, she organized the Sunday Night Song Session and composed the "Village Song." She was a member of the Frankenmuth United Methodist Church. Surviving are two granddaughters, Lauren Doll, of New York, New York, and Linda (Andy) Jacobs, of Ridgefield, Connecticut; two great-granddaughters, Allegra and Justin; and one son-in- law, Richard Doll, of New York, New York. One daughter, Christine Doll, preceded her in death in 2001. The funeral service will be at 10 a.m. on Friday, December 2, 2005, at the United Methodist Church, 346 Vates Street, in Frankenmuth. Polega, 89, of Dwight Township, died Tuesday, November 29, 2005, at the Huron County Medical Care Facility in Bad Axe. She was born December 15, 1915, daughter of the late Joseph and Mary Duk. Fr. Wren presided at her marriage to Thomas Polega on October 28, 1939 at St. Columbkille Catholic Church. Genevieve was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Dwight Township, where she was also a member of the Altar Society. She enjoyed playing bingo, going to casinos, and music. She is survived by her husband, Thomas; 11 children, Rita (Ron) Rhoades, of North Ridgeville, Ohio, John Polega, of Port Austin, Bernadette Sullivan, of Salinas, California, Theresa (Dexter) Messing, of Cass City, Monica (Tom) O'Toole, of Bad Axe, Rose Marie (Pete) Bergman, of Beverton, Genevieve Cain, of Las Vegas, Alice (Lawrence) Talaski, of Bad Axe, Thomas (Theresa) Polega, of Kinde, Patricia (Rick) Williams, of Sand Lake, and Ann Marie (David) Radford, of Topeka, Kansas; 31 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two infant grandsons, John and Joseph; her sister, Pauline Zimmerman; and three brothers, Paul, Stanley, and Walter Duk. A funeral Mass will be at 2 p.m. on Saturday, December 3, 2005, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Dwight Township. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today and from 4 to 9 p.m. on Friday at the Knoblock Funeral Home in Kinde and from noon until the time of the service on Saturday at the church. Friday, December 2, 2005 Don Dast Don Dast, 82, of Pigeon, passed away Thursday, December 1, 2005, at Covenant Harrison in Saginaw. Born in Bay Port on February 4, 1923, he was the son of the late John William and Maria T. Amanda (Heck) Dast, and was a 1940 graduate of Pigeon High School. On June 1, 1947, he was united in marriage to Verona Luedtke at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Berne. The Dasts were married for more than 52 years when Verona passed away on October 23, 1999. In 1947, Don established an egg wholesale business with Fred Wieckenberg of Detroit. In 1958, he sold his interest in the egg business and began his career with Pigeon Lumber & Supply Company, which he managed for more than 42 years until his retirement. In 2001, Don came out of retirement, and with his son Dennis, established Custom Cabinets by Pennville Plus, Inc. Don was always a staunch supporter of the Pigeon community. He was a member of the Pigeon Chamber of Commerce and a charter member and former member of the Pigeon Lions Club. He and Verona were part of a card club with dear friends for more than 50 years. He was a lifelong faithful and active voting member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Berne, where he held several offices. He is survived by two sons, Dennis Dast, of Pigeon, and Douglas Dast and his wife, Shirley, of Bay City; two daughters, Margo and her husband, Lothar von Daggenhausen, of Flint, and Wendy and her husband, Ronald Terwilliger, of Pigeon; eight grandchildren, Jennifer and Todd Thunberg, Christopher and Kelly Dast, Stephanie and Paul Wilson, Heidi von Daggenhausen and fiancé, Randall Hampton, Megan von Daggenhausen, Stacey von Daggenhausen, Brandon Terwilliger, and Jason Terwilliger; a sister, Lois Dast, of Pigeon; a brother, Wesley Dast and his wife, Verda, of Pigeon; a sister-in-law, MariAnne Dast, of Pigeon; a brother-in-law, Arthur Luedtke, of Pigeon; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, Clare Dast; and a sister-in-law, Alice Luedtke. A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Monday, December 5, 2005, at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Berne, with the Rev. James A. Gorsegner, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. DeYoung Monica Ann (Roggenbuck) DeYoung, 72, passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 27, 2005, at her home in Houston, Texas after a brief illness. Monica will be remembered lovingly by her large circle of family and friends as a lifelong learner who constantly strove to understand the bigger world, connect to it spiritually and appreciate its beauty. A devotee of the fine arts, she spent much of her adult life traveling the world and reading everything she could get her hands on in her quest for knowledge and understanding. Her travels took her to the temples of India, the opera in Vienna, the castles of Ireland and many points in between. She always had the next big trip planned, sometimes even before she had finished the last. Her favorite destinations were Colorado and Michigan to visit her children and grandchildren, where she happily applied the love of a granny and her gifts as a nurse and a seamstress to mend babies and buttons alike. Monica was born October 26, 1933 in Harbor Beach and grew up on a nearby farm with her eight brothers and five sisters. She graduated from Our Lady of Lake Huron in 1951 and from St. Mary's Nursing School in 1955. She received her bachelor's degree from Central Michigan University in 1976 and her master's degree at Michigan State University in 1980. She married Melbourne James DeYoung in 1955 and had five children. For 30 years she lived in Lansing, where she raised her family and worked as a nurse, primarily at Ingham Medical Center. She was instrumental in bringing the Hospice program to Lansing, serving two terms as president of the board of the Lansing Hospice, and was a longtime advocate of a patient's right to die with dignity and respect. She moved to her adopted city of Houston in 1987 and she continued her nursing career. While living in Houston, she immersed herself in its rich cultural offerings, regularly attending the opera and symphony and serving as an usher at the Alley Theatre. She was a volunteer in many worthwhile organizations both in Houston and in Lansing. She is survived by her son, Jim DeYoung and his wife, Karen and their three children, Jessica, Nicole and Clara; daughter, Elizabeth and her husband, John Tester and their two children, Eric and Brianna; daughter, Ann and her husband, Reg Fritts and their son, Travis; son, Matthew and his wife, Ellen Headrick and their son, Joey; and daughter Sarah and her husband, Dave Spratt and their two daughters, Emma and Natalie. She is also survived by her sisters, Edna (Tony) Roth; Lula Roggenbuck; Becky (Rich) Groll; and Anita (Scott) Plummer; brothers, Chuck (Bertha), Vin (Phyllis), Orv (Lucy), Carl (Carol), Earl (Brenda), and Harry Roggenbuck; sisters-in-law, Barbara and Dorothy Roggenbuck; and many loving nieces and nephews and dear friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Leo and Clara Roggenbuck; sister, Aletha Romzek; brothers, Jerome and Glenn Roggenbuck; sister-in-law, Rochelle Roggenbuck; and grandchildren, Shadrach Fritts and Jamie DeYoung. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Monday, December 5, 2005, at Saint Anthony's Catholic Church with Fr. Bob Roggenbuck officiating. A rosary-vigil service will be at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday in the Ramsey Funeral Home, Harbor Beach. Helen Spaulding Helen Spaulding, 89, of Fort Myers, Florida and formerly of Bad Axe, passed away on Wednesday, November 30, 2005, at Huron Medical Center after a brief illness. She was born August 23, 1916 in Yonkers, New York to the late Louis and Susan (Kriston) Kovach. She married John Spaulding in 1939, who preceded her in death in 1983. Helen, and her twin sister, Ethel, graduated from Owendale High School in 1934 and attended St. Mary's School of Nursing in Detroit. She worked as a R.N. at St. Mary's Hospital until permanently moving to Bad Axe in 1949. She worked as a surgical nurse at Bad Axe General Hospital many years before working as the Huron County health nurse, and finally as the nurse at Dr. Roy Gettel's office until retiring in 1966. She and Jay moved to Florida in 1968 and returned to Bad Axe every summer. She is survived by two daughters, Ethel Shaw and her husband, Jim, of Bad Axe, and Barbara O'Neill, of Seattle, Washington; one son, Richard Spaulding, of Seattle, Washington; one sister, Margaret Haslett, of Leesburg, Florida; two sisters-in-law, Mary Kovach, of Clio, and Marge (Kovach) Corning, of Muskegon. Her surviving grandchildren are Mark O'Neill, of Puyallup, Washington, Michael Shaw and his wife, Shelly, of Bad Axe, Steven Shaw, of Oxford, Scott Shaw and his wife, Pamela, of Troy, and Kristin Wright and her husband, Scott, of Ubly; and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by six brothers, Alonzo, Joseph, Frank, Louis, William, and George Kovach; and her twin sister, Colonel Ethel Kovach Scott. Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. on Saturday December 3, 2005, at the MacAlpine Funeral Home in Bad Axe. Visitation will be at noon until the time of the service on Saturday.
