Cook, 93, of Bad Axe, beloved mother, was called to the Lord after a short illness. She was born June 2, 1912 in Harbor Beach to the late Vincent and Anna (Rumptz) Puvalowski. She married Sylvestor Cook on October 25, 1932. Blanche enjoyed spending time with her relatives and friends. She was a member of the Bad Axe Sacred Heart Church, the Over 50 Club at the church, the Bad Axe Senior Group, the Kinde Seniors, the U and I Club, and the Huron County Meal Site. Blanche is survived by her daughters, Alita Mae (Tony) Rutkowski, of Ubly, and Lilly L. Cook, of Bad Axe; godchildren, Noreen Wazny, of Caro, and Marian Vollmering, of Kentucky; a brother, Al Puvalowski, of Bad Axe; and sisters-in-law, Grace Puvalowski and Frances Labeski, both of Ubly. She was preceded in death by her husband, Sylvester, in 1998; brothers, Raymond and Oscar Puvalowski; sisters, Regina Puvalowski and Lucille Grifka; and brother-in-law, Stanley. A Funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, April 4, 2006, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Bad Axe with Fr. Jim Carlson presiding. Burial will be in Verona Township Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. on Monday at the MacAlpine Funeral Home in Bad Axe and from 10 a.m. until the time of Mass on Tuesday at the church. There will be a scripture service at 7 p.m. and a rosary at 7:30 p.m. on Monday at the funeral home. John C. Mest John C. Mest, 83, died Friday, March 31, 2006, in the Harbor Beach Community Hospital Long Term Care Facility. He was born in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, the son of the late Ernest and Marie (Carnelius) Mest. He married Evelyn Zotz on June 25, 1949 in Detroit. He was preceded in death by his wife 56 years whom he loved and missed very much on January 10, 2006. Mr. Mest was a veteran of WWII serving in the U.S. Navy. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and woodworking. He is survived by three daughters, Ms. Susan Peck, and her fiance, Herald Hallock, of Harbor Beach, Yvonne (Dave) Habecker, of Oregon, Ranae (Jim) Stauder, of New York; three sons, John W. Mest, of IO (Idaho? or Iowa? which?), Terry (Melody) Mest, of Roseville, and Charles (Shannon) Mest, of Davison; 11 grandchildren. Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. today in the Apsey Funeral Home of Deckerville. There will be no funeral service. Memorials may be given to Eva's Place. Naomi N. Niebel Naomi Norma "Peach" Niebel, age 74, of Pigeon, passed away at home on Friday, March 31, 2006. She was born in Unionville on August 10, 1931 to the late James and Grace (McLaren) Collon. On September 9, 1950, she was united in marriage to Ralph E. "Ernie" Niebel at the Wissner Methodist Parsonage. They had been married more than 55 years when Mr. Niebel passed away on November 11, 2005. Peach was retired in 2002 from the Scheurer Hospital laundry where she had worked for more than 30 years at both the old and new facilities. She was a member of the Pigeon V.F.W. Post No. 2236 Auxiliary. She bowled for more than 40 years, and enjoyed playing Bingo as well as visiting the casino. Peach dearly loved her children and grandchildren. Her survivors include two children, Denise Niebel and her friend, Mike Particka, of Ubly, and Allen Niebel and his wife, Dana, of Owendale; seven grandchildren, Melissa, Stephanie, Kamie, Kristen, Michael, Amy, and Bryan; four great-grandchildren, Brady, Chelsey, Ashton and Makenna; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a sister, Anna Mae Collon Houthoofd; and four brothers, Arthur, Richard, Theron (Chuck), and James Collon. The funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, April 4, 2006, at the Pigeon First United Methodist Church, with the Rev. John Britt, pastor, officiating. Cremation will follow. Memorials may be given to Hospice or the family's wishes. Rita M. Susalla Mrs. Rita M. Susalla, 81, of Bad Axe and formerly of Ubly, passed away on Friday, March 31, 2006, at the Huron County Medical Care Facility in Bad Axe. She was born on November 12, 1924 in Ubly to the late John and Elizabeth (Rumptz) Kaliszewski. She married Arthur Susalla on November 6, 1943 at St. John Catholic Church in Ubly. Rita was a graduate of a country school and worked on the family farm. After she married Arthur, she lived in Ubly and has been a member of St. John Catholic Church in Ubly for 60 years. Rita and her husband moved to Bad Axe in 1980 and have resided there since. She attended Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Bad Axe for a few years. She cleaned residences for many years before retiring in 2002. She enjoyed polka dancing, casinos and traveling with her husband. Rita is survived by her husband of 62 years, Arthur, of Bad Axe; two sons, Kenneth Susalla and his wife, Marlys, of Zephyrhills, Florida, Gary Susalla and his significant other, Dorothy Hund, of Cass City; two grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; 14 step-great-grandchildren; one brother, Elmer Kaliszewski and his wife, Helen, of Redford. Baranski, 84, of Port Austin, died Sunday, April 2, 2006, at Huron Medical Center in Bad Axe. She was born on November 8, 1921 in Dwight Township, daughter of the late Michael and Catherine (Wadas) Koroleski. She married Bernard Baranski on November 8, 1941 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Dwight Township. Rose was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church in Port Austin where she was also a member of the Holy Rosary Sodality. She enjoyed cooking, baking, flower gardening, and plants. Most of all, she loved spending time with her family. She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Bernard, of Port Austin; one son, Joseph Baranski, of Port Austin; three daughters, Cathy (Mike) Gallagher, of Bay City, Sharon (Jim) Scranton, of Traverse City, and Elaine (Ron) Helmer, of Freeland; seven grandchildren, Angela (Joe) Roesner, Bill (Juanita) Martin, Laurie (Dennis) Krajniak, Ryan Scranton and his fiancee, Heidi Weston, Cassie Scranton and her fiancé, Phil Courles, and Adam and Mandy Helmer; and 11 great-grandchildren, Josh, Mary, Hannah, Emily, Ellen, Anna, Audrey , Chris, Kyle, Elizabeth, and Spencer; and her sister, Helen Yaroch. Glenna "Pat" Christiansen Glenna "Pat" Christiansen, 63, of Bad Axe, passed away on Saturday, April 1, 2006, at Huron Medical Center in Bad Axe. She was born on October 6, 1942 in Toledo, Ohio, daughter of the late David and Gertrude Cook. She is survived by one son, Michael Christiansen, of Jackson; two daughters, Deborah (David) Hacker, of Bad Axe, Tina Christiansen, of Florida; and nine grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister. A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, April 5, 2006, at the Kaufman Funeral Home in Bad Axe. James Gretz James Gretz, 76, of Decker, died Sunday, April 2, 2006, at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit. He was born July 26, 1929 in Applegate, son of the late George and Verna (Verb) Gretz. He married Mary Alice O'Connor on December 1, 1956 in Pinnebog. Mr. Gretz was a lifelong area farmer of Sanilac County. He enjoyed farming, gardening, reading, working on cars, remodeling homes, and most of all, his family. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Mary Alice, of Decker; two sons, Jim and Julie Gretz, of Great Bend, Kansas, Tom Gretz and his fiancee, Louise Northrop, of Deford; one grandson, Garrett; and one granddaughter, Jordon Gretz, of Great Bend, Kansas; sister, Ann Papp, of Cass City; sister-in-law, Dorothy Gretz, of Bad Axe. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Mike, Andy, Gaza, Steve, George, Charles, and Joe Gretz; and a sister, Helen Nemeth. Haire, 44, of Tawas City and formerly of Bay Port, died Monday, April 3, 2006, at Covenant HealthCare Cooper in Saginaw following a brief illness. He was born June 2, 1961 in Tawas City, son of the late Hart S. and Nelda L. (Miller) Haire. He married Linda Timm on July 3, 2002 in Bad Axe. She preceded him in death on April 23, 2005. Walt had been employed at the Bay Port Fish Company in Bay Port before becoming disabled in a motorcycle accident in 1985. He enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, hunting, and motorcycling and had a passion for lighthouses. Surviving are two sons, Hart Haire III, and Walter Haire, Jr., both of Sebewaing; five step children; two sisters and two brothers, Margaret Miller, of Caseville, Wendy Fairchild, of Bay Port, Clyde W. Haire and James Haire; special friend, Nicole Androl; several nieces and nephews. Strozeski, 82, of Bad Axe, passed away on Sunday, April 2, 2006, following a short illness. He was born on November 15, 1923 in Grindstone to the late Valentine and Helen (Miller) Strozeski. He was united in marriage on August 6, 1949 to Gertrude Filipiak. Mr. Strozeski was a resident of Colfax Township for 41 years. He farmed his entire life and was also employed with Bower Roller Bearing Company, Elkton Box Factory, Kinde Elevator, and retired from Active Industries after 31 years. He was a church member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Bad Axe. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Gertrude Strozeski, of Bad Axe; one son, Sylvester Strozeski, of Vanderbilt; two daughters, Christine Osantowski and her husband, Larry, of Gagetown, Arlene Depcinski and her husband, Douglas, of Bay City; two brothers, Alex Strozeski, of Bad Axe, Robert Strozeski, of Port Austin; one sister-in-law, Irene Strozeski, of Port Austin; one half-sister-in-law, Agnes Jimpkoski; four grandchildren, Jason Osantowski, of Saginaw, Tammy Talaski and her husband, Eric, of Kinde, Travis and Tricia Depcinski, of Bay City; one great-grandchild, Hunter Talaski; and many nieces and nephews. Robert Edward Schneck Robert Edward Schneck, 47, of Beverly Hills, Florida and formerly of Sterling Heights, died Tuesday, March 28, 2006, at Hospice House of Citrus County, Florida. Bob was born on June 17, 1958 in Detroit, a son of Harold Edward and Bernadine (nee Zimmerman) Schneck. On September 8, 1978, Bob married Kathleen Calliea in Sterling Heights. He was a former driver in the sanitation industry. Bob enjoyed fishing, golfing, baseball, football, and going to casinos. Tschirhart Joyce Elaine (nee Krohn) Tschirhart, 71, an Elkton native and long-time Plymouth resident, died of intestinal cancer on Monday, April 3, 2006, at her home with her family by her side. "Our mother was a very driven woman in business and family affairs - she really had the heart of a lioness," her son, Mark, said. "But she was also a kind, generous and religious woman. She didn't wear her Catholic faith on her sleeve, she lived it." She had a very successful career as a realtor, having sold hundreds of homes over 33 years with Dibble Realty, William Decker Realtors, Robert Bake Realty, and Coldwell Banker Schweitzer - Bake Realty. She and her husband of 50 years, James, enjoyed traveling throughout the United States, Europe, and the Caribbean. She enjoyed entertaining, having hosted many holiday gatherings, card clubs and bible study groups through the years. A 40-year member of Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church in Plymouth, she was very active in parish affairs and served as a Eucharistic minister. In addition to her husband, James, she is survived by her children, Dr. James (Jill) Tschirhart M.D., Chief of Surgery at Saginaw's St. Mary Hospital and Professor of Surgery for Michigan State University, Patricia (Thomas) Spangler, a clinical psychologist in Bethesda, Maryland, Dr. Robert (Jacalyn Green, Ph.D.) Tschirhart Ph.D., a nuclear particle physicist at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in Chicago, Mark Tschirhart, a technical writer for Del Medical Systems in Chicago, Philip Tschirhart, a science teacher at Leonardtown High School in Leonardtown, Maryland, and Dr. John (Karen Wang, M.D.) Tschirhart, M.D., a surgeon at the Swedish Medical Center in Seattle, Washington. She is also survived by 11 grandchildren and her sister, Phyllis Tamblyn, of Elkton. She was preceded in death by her parents, Howard Krohn and Mame McGinnis Krohn and her beloved brother, Gary Krohn. Kundinger, 78, of Sebewaing, died Monday, April 3, 2006, at the Scheurer Hospital in Pigeon following a lengthy illness. She was born on October 26, 1927 in Saginaw County, daughter of the late John and Bertha (Beyer) Schlicker. She was married to Harold R. Kundinger on August 14, 1948 in Trinity Lutheran Church, Monitor Township, Bay City. Bernadine had been employed at Michigan Bell in Saginaw before moving to Sebewaing and helping on the farm with her husband. She was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church in Bach, the Ladies Aid, L.W.M.L., Thursday morning Bible class, A.A.L. and especially enjoyed working on church funcions. She enjoyed playing cards, and loved being with her family. She was born on April 23, 1915 in Bad Axe, daughter of the late Arnold and Mable (Clark) Dunlap. She married Woodrow G. Armstrong on September 25, 1933 in Detroit. He preceded her in death on May 11, 2003 after 69 years of marriage. Mrs. Armstrong, along with her husband, owned and operated the former Armstrong Lumber in Bad Axe. She enjoyed spending time with her family and traveling. She is survived by two sons, Donald Paul (Gloria) Armstrong, of Bad Axe, David (Janet) Armstrong, of Bad Axe; five grandchildren, Linda (Jimmy) Severino, of Des Moines, Iowa, Sharon Armstrong, of Cass City, Michael Baker, of Cape Coral, Florida, Linda Sue (Mike) Chumbler, of Harbor Springs, Dean Armstrong, of Filion; one great-grandson, Carson Chumbler, of Harbor Springs. She was preceded in death by one brother, Clark Dunlap; and one grandson, Mark Armstrong. Graveside services will be conduced at Colfax Cemetery at a later date. Barbara (Irion) Balzer Barbara (Irion) Balzer, 49, of Lawrence, passed away suddenly Monday evening, April 3, 2006, at the Bronson Methodist Hospital, Kalamazoo. Barbara was born May 25, 1956 in Bay City, the daughter of Clemens and Madeline (Kroll) Irion. Barbara was employed by the state of Michigan working at the Department of Agriculture. She was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church, Paw Paw. On April 7, 1984, she was united in marriage to Raymond Balzer at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Unionville. Surviving are her husband, Raymond; two daughters, Margaret and Rose, both at home; her mother, Madeline Irion, of Sebewaing; a sister, Martha (Jeff) Pearce, of Long Grove, Iowa; a brother, Timothy (Sandy) Irion, of Sebewaing; and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. (Eppenbrock) Barker, 96, of Lexington, died Wednesday, April 5, 2006, in Lexington. Lucy was born January 14, 1910 in Harbor Beach, daughter of the late Peter and Anna (Holdwick) Eppenbrock. Her husband, Earl Barker, died in 1940. Lucy was a nanny for several years and later served as a housekeeper for over 60 years at Catholic rectories. She was a member of St. Denis Catholic Church, The Altar Society and St. Theresa's Circle. Surviving are a son, Kenneth, of Fort Gratiot; and a daughter and son-in-law, Doris and Donald Diorio, of Berkeley Springs, West Virginia; her nephew, Fr. Donald Eppenbrock, with whom she lived for the past 15 years; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Monday, April 10, 2006, at St. Denis Catholic Church. Fr. Donald Eppenbrock will be the main celebrant with other priests concelebrating. Schulze, 78, of Pigeon, passed away on Wednesday, April 5, 2006, at the Lighthouse Rehabilitation Center in Caro. He was born in Pigeon on February 11, 1928, son of the late Otto and Lydia (Trost) Schulze. He was united in marriage to Elaine Birsching in Sebewaing on June 16, 1951. She survives him. Mr. Schulze was a farmer throughout his lifetime. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, hockey, and playing cards with friends. He was a former member of the Pigeon Lions Club. He was a member of the St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Berne, where he was formerly on elder and trustee. In addition to his wife, Elaine, to whom he had been married for almost 55 years, he is survived by five children, Larry (Diana) Schulze, of Hale, Dennis Schulze, of Caseville, Randall Schulze, Jean Cosgrove, and Thomas (Tamara) Schulze, all of Pigeon; 12 grandchildren, Scott Schulze, Erin Fenner, Carman McNamara, Nathaniel Schulze, Christina Montoya, Jonathan Schulze, Jeffery Schulze, Tonie Harcourt, Alex Stahlbaum, Andrew Stahlbaum, Michael Schulze, and Michelle Schulze; seven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Eleanor (Raymond) Tate, of Pigeon, and Magdalene (Dr. Norman) Townley, of Indianapolis, Indiana; and several nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Monday, April 10, 2006, at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church with the Rev. James A. Gorsegner, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. on Saturday and 1 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Sunday at Meyersieck-Bussema Funeral Home, Pigeon, and at 10 to 11 a.m. on Monday at the church. Gruber, 47, of Cass City, died after a short illness on Wednesday, April 5, 2006, in her home with her family at her side. She was born June 21, 1958 in Cass City to Edward and Reva (Hutchinson) Dillon, Jr. She married William John Gruber on June 4, 1974 in Caro. Lori graduated from Cass City High School in 1976. She was a seamstress, creating beautiful wedding gowns and prom dresses. Lori was a beautiful interior decorator. She refinished furniture and would redecorate entire houses for many clients. Lori was a champion Scrabble player. She was a fabulous cook and cake decorator, making creative, age-appropriate cakes for each of her grandchildren. She was a "Super" mom. Her six grandsons meant the world to her. Lori was a generous helpful person, always willing to lend a helping hand. Lori is survived by her devoted husband, Bill; loving children, Angie Gruber, of Cass City, Tara (Jeff) Ludwig, of Almont, William (Kelly) Gruber, Jr., of Gagetown, Lacey (friend, Chuck Hughes) Gruber, of Caro; grandchildren: Taylor, Drew, Mitchell, Blake, Brock and Trysten; mother, Reva Dillon, of Cass City; brother, Patrick (Cheryl) Dillon, of Cass City; sisters, Kimberly (friend, Henry) Buehrly, of Davison, Kerry (George) Baumgartner, of Unionville, Becky (Joe Cooper) O'Harris, of Holland, Kelly (Scott) Conrad, of Cass City; father-in-law, John (Velma) Gruber, of Dothan, Alabama; brother-in-law, Michael (Doreen) Gruber, of Jacksonville, Florida; many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. She is preceded in death by her father, Edward Dillon Jr., grandparents, Ed Dillon, Sr., Beatrice Bohan, Iva Peterson, and John Peterson; nephew, Derik Dillon; mother-in-law, Eula Gruber; brother-in-law, Joseph Gruber. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 8, 2006, at Kranz Funeral Home, Cass City, with Pastor Robert Sweeney, of Cass City Missionary Church, officiating.
