McBride, 84, of Standish and formerly of Caseville, passed away Thursday evening, August 31, 2006, at Saint Mary's of Standish Hospital Skilled Nursing Facility with his family at his side. Robert was born February 17, 1922 at the home of his parents, Joseph and Rosalia (Witherspoon) McBride in Elkton. He was united in marriage to Irene C. Gelnaw on February 14, 1942 during World War II. Robert served his country in the U.S. Army Pacific Theater. Robert owned and operated a farm in Caseville until moving to Standish in 1961 where he continued farming and working as a welder and pipe fitter for Defoe Shipyard in Bay City. He then worked as a bus mechanic for the Standish Sterling School District until his retirement in 1984. After retirement, he enjoyed spending time with his family, trips to Florida, and gardening. He also was a member of the American Legion. Robert is survived by his wife of 64 years, Irene; seven children, Joseph (Margaret Ann) McBride, of Pigeon, June Drake, of Marshall, Texas, Robert L. McBride, of Belding, Charles (Kathy) McBride, of Sterling, Richard (Cathy) McBride. of Parrish, Florida, Patrick (Mary) McBride, of Standish, William (Connie) McBride, of Standish; 16 grandchildren, and 19 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers, William, Kenneth and infant, Forest McBride; three sisters, Marquerite Rodgers, Clara Laming, Mildred Ballagh, granddaughter, Dorothy Elizabeth (Beth) McBride, son-in-law, Michael Drake. The family would like to thank the staff of Standish Hospital and Skilled Nursing, Heartland Hospice, Sister Edith, and Rose Kosemba for their help and kindness. Family and friends may call at the R. Bulla John C. Bulla, 81, of Cass City, died Sunday, September 3, 2006, in Huron Medical Center, Bad Axe. He was born October 20, 1924 at home in Austin Township to John D. and Catherine (Gillis) Bulla. He married Clara F. Periso on October 19, 1952 in St. Michael Catholic Church, Wilmot. John attended Cumber Rural School and Ubly High School. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the Seventh Fleet between New Guinea and the Philippines. He worked at Pontiac Motors and Active Industries. John enjoyed the outdoors. John is survived by his wife, Clara; children, Lawrence (Gail) Bulla, of Deford, Arthur Bulla, of Elkton, Hugh Bulla, of Elkton; daughter-in-law, Patsy Bulla, of Cass City; 16 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; sisters, Helen Bulla, of Pontiac, Josephine Bulla, of Pontiac, Irene Olczak, of Lansing; brother, Michael Bulla, of Ubly; many nieces and nephews. Francis "Frank" Henry Gregory Frank H. Gregory, 86, of Sebewaing, died Monday, September 4, 2006, in Bay Medical Center, Bay City. He was born June 13, 1920 in Bay City, the youngest of seven children of William A. and Agnes (Simon) Gregory. He and Luella Krauss, of Sebewaing, were married December 13, 1941 in Bay City. Frank was drafted into the Army Air Force in March 1942. He served four years during World War II. During his military career, he served 24 months in the Pacific Theater. Frank flew as the crew chief on General Eichelberger's B17. Upon receiving his honorary discharge, he settled in Sebewaing. Frank and Luella became partners in Krauss Dairy Farms. For more than 30 years, he could be seen growing crops, milking brown Swiss Dairy cows, processing milk at the dairy or delivering milk door to door in the Sebewaing community. Frank became involved in his new community as a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, serving as an elder, member of the finance committee, member of the board of education for Immanuel Lutheran School and other committees in the congregation. He was a member of the Sebewaing VFW Post No. 4115 and the Sebewaing American Legion Post No. 293. Frank was a 4-H leader, served on the 4-H council for Huron County and the State 4-H advisory council. Frank is survived by his wife, Luella; children, Frank (Patricia) Gregory, of Owosso, Don (Ann) Gregory, of Suttons Bay, Robert (Dianne) Gregory, of Traverse City, Mary (William) Casault, of Bay City, Fred (Judy) Gregory, of Sebewaing, Judy (Mark) Gerisch, of Caseville. He is also survived by 16 grandchildren, Jon, Heidi, Kate, Emily, Matthew, Peter, Carrie, Andrew, Eric, Erin, Patrick, Stacy, Amy, Patrick, Michael, and Megan; seven great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by sisters, Louise O'Keefe, Theodora Scott, Charlene Keefe and Wilhelmina Gregory; brothers, William Gregory and Fredrick Gregory. (Hagen) Hurford, 90, of Ubly, passed away Friday, September 1, 2006, at Courtney Manor of Bad Axe after a long illness. Gertrude was born December 19, 1915 to the late Robert John and Ann Elizabeth (Murray) Hagen. She married Barton S. Hurford on March 21, 1936 in Bad Axe. He preceded her in death on June 11, 1990. Gertrude was a graduate of Ubly High School. She worked as head cook at the Ubly Community School for 30 years retiring in 1974. She was a lifelong member of the First Presbyterian Church of Ubly. Gertrude is survived by one son, Peter Lynn Hurford and his wife, Bette Lou, of Cass City; one daughter, Janet Murphy and her husband, William, of Port Hope; seven grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; two great-great- grandchildren; one sister, Kathleen Schuler, of Port Huron; two brothers, Murray Hagen, of Brookville, Florida, and Merrill Hagen and his wife, Isabelle, of Caro. She was preceded in death by one brother, Robert John Hagen; one sister-in-law, Genevieve Hagen; one brother-in-law, Peter Schuler. Laura Lucile Voelker Lavalley Laura Lucile Voelker Lavalley, 90, of Pigeon, passed away Friday, September 1, 2006, at Courtney Manor in Bad Axe. She was born in Winsor Township on May 8, 1916, daughter of the late Oscar and Martha (Gettel) Voelker. After receiving her R.N. degree from the University of Michigan, Laura moved to Detroit where she began her career as a public health nurse for the city of Detroit. She attained her masters degree in public health from the University of Michigan in June 1959. On December 3, 1960 she was united in marriage to Laurence Lavalley at the Salem Church in Pigeon. In 1967, the couple moved to Seattle where his job had taken him to work for Boeing. While in Seattle, she worked in public health and later worked as a registered nurse at a Swedish hospital until her retirement. Her husband preceded her in death on November 4, 1986 and Mrs. Lavalley returned to Pigeon in the mid-1990s. She was an artist and painted many pictures. She was a member of the University of Michigan Alumni Association and the Salem United Methodist Church in Pigeon. Her survivors include a sister, Vera (James) Lum, of Prescott Valley, Arizona; two brothers, Otto (Anita) Voelker and Donald Voelker, both of Pigeon; many nieces and nephews and their spouses; and many friends. She was preceded in death by two sisters and their husbands, Lila and Percy Rader and Velma and Henry Valasik; and a sister-in-law, Viola Voelker. The funeral service was conducted on Monday, September 4, 2006, at the Meyersieck-Bussema Funeral Home, Pigeon. The Rev. Michael T. Sawicki, pastor of Salem United Methodist Church, officiated. Betty Jane Hunter Betty Jane Hunter, 82, of Kingston, died Sunday, September 3, 2006, at the Tuscola County Medical Care Facility. She was born July 28, 1924 in Saginaw to Arthur and Ruth (Gohs) Kelley. She married Douglas Hunter on January 5, 1942 in Mayville. He died March 21, 2003. Jane was a founding member of Mayville Eagles. She was an excellent cook. Jane enjoyed gardening, knitting, and being around people. Jane is survived by her children, Ruth A. John Donald Vert John "Jack" Donald Vert passed away Tuesday, August 29, 2006, in Orcutt, California. John was born October 25, 1922 to Alex and Naomi Vert in Sault Ste. Marie. Jack, as he was known by to his family and friends, served aboard the USS Flint CL97 in the Pacific during World War II. Jack worked for the Gambles in Sault Ste. Marie and transferred as manager to Gambles in Bad Axe. Jack bought the Western Auto store in Bad Axe after leaving Gambles. Jack and his family relocated to Mesa, Arizona in 1971 where he was operations manager for Kmart until his retirement. He is survived by his third wife, Ruth, of Orcutt, California; daughter, Lana McKnight and her husband, Charles, of Bad Axe; son, Donald Vert and wife, Connie, of Phoenix, Arizona; son, Joseph and wife, Johnnine, of Mesa, Arizona; son, Scott Vert,; daughter, Kay and husband, Jon, of Apache Junction, Arizona; ten siblings, brothers, Sam (Betty), Ross (Judy), and Ralph (Wilma), sister, Marylou (David) Weir, Shirley Jergler, Eva Lanham, and Chris Mattson, all of Sault Ste. Marie, brothers, Carl, of Phoenix, and Harry (Karen), of Mesa, Arizona, brother, Cal (Bonnie), of Mt. Clemens. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Jack will be laid to rest alongside his first wife, Mary Leoma in the National Cemetery, Phoenix, Arizona. Arrangements are pending. Wednesday, September 6. 2006 Jean A. Bauman Jean A. Bauman, 90, of Elkton, died Tuesday morning, September 5, 2006, at Satchell's Christian Retirement Home, Caro. She was born January 25, 1916 in Peoria, Illinois to the late Alva and Inez (Ullrich) Hardy. On June 28, 1940, she was united in marriage to Stanley A. Bauman in Detroit. They moved to Elkton in 1942 from Montgomery, when Stanley accepted the band director's position for Elkton High School. They continued living in Elkton the rest of their lives. He preceded her in death on February 24, 1983. Jean spent the biggest part of her life raising her family and teaching them the love of music and the skills to carry it out. Much of her life was spent teaching piano and dramatic art, having hundreds of students over the years. She started speaking at church at age 14 and continued until age 76, preaching and teaching in churches' revival meetings, mother/daughter banquets and local civic organizations. She was a strong supporter and very involved in Bay Shore Camp as Vesper speaker for the youth. In 1978, she was named Mother of the Year for the State of Michigan. Jean was a member of the Elkton United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women. She taught Sunday school and led Bible studies for adults and youth for many years. Surviving are seven children and their spouses, Kenistan (Bonnie) Bauman, of Concord, Sharolee (Jake) Roberts, of Scottsbluff, Nebraska, Audrejean (Alan) Heydenburg, of Grasslake, Roneldon (Kay) Bauman, of Flower Mound, Texas, Dwight "Ted" (Jeri-Gene) Bauman, of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Deanna "Dee Dee" (Russ) Tibbits, of Caro, and Tamara (Elroy) Kosters, of Caro; 16 grandchildren, Jeff (Diane) Bauman, Annalisa (Jamie) Brigham, Michael (Pam) Bauman, David (Christy) Roberts, Owen (Bridget) Roberts, Julie Roberts, Jonathon Roberts, Robert Heydenburg, Alicia (Mike) Dickens, Chris (Melissa) Heydenburg, Kelly (Charlie) Dierke, Kevin (Aubyn) Bauman, Kari (Chad) Beauchamp, Haley Bauman, Melody Tibbits and Megan Tibbits; 24 great-grandchildren; and two sisters-in-law, Marie Hardy, of Virginia, and Helene Hardy, of Detroit. Davis Harlow L. Davis, 73, of Bay City and formerly of Montrose, died Thursday, August 31, 2006 at the Bay Regional Medical Center after a lingering illness. Harlow was born November 2, 1932 in Livonia to the late Lloyd and Lois (Metzler) Davis. He had resided in the Montrose area most of his life. Harlow married Janice Lewis on March 27, 1954. He was a U.S. Army Veteran serving from 1955-1957. He was employed with Fisher 1 for 37 years retiring in 1991. Harlow was a member of UAW Local 598, the Caseville Eagles and life member of the Montrose Masonic Lodge No. 428 F&AM. He enjoyed fishing and going to the casino. Surviving are his wife, Janice; children, Susan (Ralph) Knapp, Sherry (Mike) Stack, Sharon Davis, Sandra Reinhart, Shirley Davis and Steven (Libby) Davis; many grandchildren and great grandchildren; sisters, Mary Noland, Lillian (Herbert) Carrell, Patricia (Wayne) Holland; several nieces and nephews; special friends, Norman and Jenny Gammage, Carl and Ann Cluckey and Ray and Vicky Nowak. Eleanor Kowalski Mrs. Eleanor Kowalski, 85, of Minden City, passed away Tuesday morning, September 5, 2006 at Courtney Manor of Bad Axe. Eleanor was born October 30, 1920 in Almont to the late J. Mitchell and Jennie (Mair) Currey. She married John P. Kowalski on July 9, 1942 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Bad Axe. She was a graduate of the Almont High School and the Bronson Hospital School of Nursing in Kalamazoo. She worked as a registered nurse for the Bad Axe Hubbard Hospital, the Deckerville Hospital, and the Sanilac County Health Department for more than 30 years. She was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Palms. She was a member of the Minden City Lioness Club and the Minden City Community Clinic Auxiliary for many years. Eleanor and her husband, John, served as Grand Marshall for the Minden City Homecoming Parade in 1997. She was an avid bowler and loved shopping and spending time with her family. Eleanor is survived by her husband, John, of Minden City; five children, John Kowalski and his wife, Mo, of LaBelle, Florida, Dorie Knox, of Rochester Hills, Kathryn Lautner and her husband, Al, of Minden City, Tom Kowalski and his wife, Ginny, of Carleton, Janet Wehner and her husband, Dale, of Marlette; 13 grandchildren; 14 great- grandchildren; one sister, Carol Heim and her husband, Don, of Almont; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two grandchildren, Jeffrey Kowalski and Michelle (Knox) Galecka; one son-in-law, John Knox; two brothers, Robert and James Currey; three sisters, Marjorie Tower, Jean Stanwood, and Christine Vandawaker. John "Walt" Shepherd John "Walt" Shepherd, 86, of Bad Axe, passed away Tuesday, September 5, 2006, at the Huron Medical Care Facility in Bad Axe. He was born November 4, 1919 in Huron Township, son of the late William and Helen (McNeil) Shepherd. He married Clara J. Moran on August 28, 1943 in Bloomfield Township. He was a graduate of Kinde High School. He worked for a short time during World War II for General Motors in Saginaw, and at Dunn Paper Company, of Port Huron, for five years. He returned to Huron County in 1951 to work at Frankenmuth Tool & Engineering, where he became a journeyman of skilled trades. This plant closed and he became one of the original owners of Huron Tool & Engineering of Bad Axe. Since 1989, he has been spending his winters in his home in Sarasota, Florida. He was an avid fisherman in both Michigan and Florida. He also enjoyed hunting, canoeing, square dancing and skiing. He had been a member of the "Thumb Bums" camping club since its origin over 30 years ago, as well as a member of the Oakwood Manor Shuffleboard Club. He has been an active member of the United Methodist Church in Bad Axe, where he has held several offices. His avocation was farming, which he had continued to be involved in throughout his life. Survived are his wife, Clara, of Bad Axe; one son, Thomas (Patricia) Shepherd, of Port Austin; two sisters, Marion (Phil) Thomas, of Port Huron, Eleanor (Kenneth) Pawlitz, of Sterling Heights; one grandson, Christopher (Jennifer) Talaski, of Yale; two great granddaughters, Laney and Renee Talaski, of Yale; and many nieces and nephews. Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Friday, September 8, 2006, at the Bad Axe United Methodist Church. Interment will be in Colfax Cemetery. Thursday, September 7, 2006 Wayne Pallas Wayne Pallas, 39, of Decker, passed away Tuesday, September 5, 2006, at Hills and Dales Hospital, Cass City. He was born August 17, 1967 in Cass City to Herbert Pallas and the late Mary Louise (Caister) Pallas of Decker. Wayne worked at several farms in the Decker area and was an employee of Huggett Sod Farm, Inc. of Marlette for more than 14 years. Wayne began working on loading sod and proceeded to drive a semitruck for the company. The Huggett Sod Farm employees and owners were like family to Wayne. Wayne graduated from Deford Christian Academy in 1987. He attended Deford Community Church, Novesta Baptist Church, and Holbrook Baptist Church throughout his life. He enjoyed driving a semi, driving his race car, fishing, hunting, barbecuing and spending time with his very close family and friends. Wayne's family and friends were a very important part of his life. His love for everyone was very significant. Wayne accepted Jesus to direct his path from this earth to heaven's gate and went peacefully to heaven. He is survived by his father, Herbert Pallas; two sisters, Judith (James) Boyce, of Cass City, and Sandra (Daniel) Widdis, of Jenison; several nieces and nephews, Misty (Steven) Shafer, of Georgia, Tina Pallas and Mark Keefover, of Colorado, Angela Boyce and Heith Forster, of Cass City, James Boyce Jr., of Cass City, Krysta Boyce, of Cass City, Daniel (Heather) Widdis, of Jenison, Brant (Angela) Widdis, of Belding, Lydia, Micah, Elisabeth, Elise, Jonathan, Abram, and Nicolas Widdis, all of Jenison; great nieces and nephews, Steven Shafer, of Georgia, Michael, Timothy and Thomas Harp, all of Cass City, Brittany and Caleb Widdis, both of Jenison, Natalie and Bransen Widdis, both of Belding; and several aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Fisher, 69, of Colfax Township, passed away Wednesday, September 6, 2006, at Huron Medical Center in Bad Axe. He was born November 5, 1936 in Detroit to the late Cecilia Schad and Wilbert Fisher. He was united in marriage on June 22, 1957 to Joann Fisher at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Bad Axe. He retired from Lee Wood of Essexville after 22 years and then worked part-time at the BP Station in Bad Axe as a maintenance man. He enjoyed driving his 1968 Ford and fixing cars with his son. Harold loved his family, gardening and working at BP. He is survived by his wife, Joann, of Bad Axe; stepfather, Charles Schad, of Bad Axe; daughter, Kathleen (Robert) Ruth, of Bad Axe; son, Daniel (Tracey) Fisher, of Elkton; granddaughters, Kristi (Matthew) Klosowski, of Bad Axe, Dena Fisher, of Rochester Hills, Amber (Michael) Blackstock, of Bad Axe; grandson, Joshua Ruth, of Mt. There will be a scripture at 7:30 p.m. today. Carl T. Leese Carl T. Leese, 77, of Port Hope, passed away Wednesday, September 6, 2006, in Port Huron Hospital. Born July 11, 1929 in Port Hope, Carl was the son of Viola Krutz Leese and the late Theodore Leese. Carl was a veteran of the U.S. Army and a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Port Hope. He is survived by his mother, Viola Leese, of Port Hope; three sisters, Violet Keeth, of Port Hope, Ethel Kallenbach and her husband, Rudolph, of Scotsdale, Arizona, and Florence Chamberlein, of Garden City; a brother, Wilfred Leese and his wife, Marge, of Simi Valley, California; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. on Monday, September 11, 2006, in St. John Lutheran Church, Port Hope, with the Rev. Gregory Eilers, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the Verona Township Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. on Sunday in the Ramsey Funeral Home, Harbor Beach, and from noon until the time of the service on Monday at the church. A scripture service will be at 7 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home. Max S. Patrick Max S. Patrick, 93, died peacefully Wednesday, September 6, 2006, at the Marlette Hospice Residence in Marlette. Mr. Patrick has lived in Marlette since 1946 and was previously from the Kingston and Detroit areas. He was born February 21, 1913 in Flint, son of the late Russell and Lottie (Dunsford) Patrick. He attended Kingston Schools and was drafted into the U.S. Navy in 1942, spending most of his time at a submarine base in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii in the engineering and repair division. He and Bess Green, of Kingston, were married June 8, 1946 in Cass City. In 1946, he established Marlette Roofing and Sheet Metal Company, which has remained a successful family-owned commercial-industrial roofing business for more than 60 years. Max was a charter member of the Marlette Lions Club where he remained active in the club in many capacities. He also was one of the driving forces behind the Marlette Pool and Park which was built in 1953. He was a long time member of the Marlette First United Methodist Church, where he will be remembered for his many hours of service working on boards and many church projects. He was a member of the Michigan Steelheaders Association. Max enjoyed boating, fishing, bowling and most of all his family. He and his wife spent the last 21 winters on Nettles Island in Jensen Beach, Florida, where he was a member of the Men's Club. In 2000, he and his wife were honored as Marlette Citizens of the Year. Max is survived by his wife of 60 years, Bess; son, Bruce (Dianne), of Orange, California; daughter, Sharon Parks, of Farmington Hills; and son, Sam (Barbara) Patrick, of Sand Point; nine grandchildren, Chris, Brad, Kevin, Brenda, Matt, Ben, Jennifer, Kate and Alex; 22 great-grandchildren; and sister-in-law, Lucille Patrick, of Essexville. He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Jean Patrick, in 1963; two brothers, Leonard and Bruce Patrick; two sisters, Ruth Herron and Evelyn Long. A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Saturday, September 9, 2006, at Marlette First United Methodist Church, with Pastor Daniel Bowman and Pastor John Allen officiating. Burial will be in the Marlette Cemetery in Marlette. Memorials may be donated to the Jean Patrick Student Loan Fund or Marlette First United Methodist Church. Marie "Mamie" K. Peruski Mrs. Marie "Mamie" K. Peruski, 87, of Ubly, passed away Thursday, September 7, 2006, at Huron Medical Center of Bad Axe. Marie was born November 13, 1918 in Detroit to the late Lawrence and Theresa (O'Parka) Lamke. She married Frank J. Peruski on November 7, 1939 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Parisville. He preceded her in death on January 11, 1984. She attended the Maurer Country School and St. Mary's Catholic School. She was a homemaker all her life. She loved to cook, go to dances, and spend time with her grandchildren and senior friends. Marie is survived by her children, Richard (Chris) Peruski, of Ubly, Agnes Peruski and her special friend, Chub Shubel, of Ubly, Eugene (Denise) Peruski, of Bad Axe, Jerry (Karen) Peruski, of Caro, Dennis Peruski and his special friend, Cathy Hansen, of Argyle; seven grandchildren, Kathy Spencer and her husband, Joe, of Ubly, Randy Peruski and his wife, Nancy, of Ubly, Renč Parks and her husband, Bill, of North Carolina, Alice Peruski, and Michele Peruski, both of Bad Axe, Michael Peruski, of Snover, Steven Peruski, of Ubly; four great- grandchildren; one great greatgrandson; her brothers and sisters, Cass Lamke and his wife, Ruby, of Bad Axe, Elmer Lamke, of Ubly, Eugene Lamke and his wife, Mildred, of Ruth, Evelyn Susalla and her husband, Jake, of Ubly, Arlene Longuski and her husband, Jerry, of Ubly, Richard Lamke and his wife, Barbara, of Ubly; one sister-in-law, Irene Lamke, of Bad Axe; and many nieces and nephews. Emma Lou Vallance Emma Lou Vallance, 74, of Caseville, died Thursday, September 7, 2006, at Bay Regional Medical Center in Bay City after a short illness. Emma Lou was born December 17, 1931 in Wolverine to the late William Cady and Mildred (Stokes) Mealoy. She married Willard Vallance of Cheboygan on January 7, 1950 in Cheboygan. They moved to Pontiac where they raised their family and she worked at the Pontiac State Hospital. After visiting Caseville for many years, they retired and moved there permanently in 1989. She was a member of the Caseville United Methodist Church, the Caseville Library Club and was the secretary of the Caseville Retirement Club. She is survived by her children, Larry (Mary), of Oxford, Don (Lori), of Odessa, Florida, Bill (Debbi), of Grand Blanc, Russ (Siggi), of Germany, George (Marty) and Kim (Loren) Gary, both of Indian River; 15 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; a sister, Helen Canfield, of Cheboygan; and brothers, Cady (Willeta) Mealoy, of California, Ron (Nan) Mealoy, of Jackson, and Russ (Donna) Mealoy, of Cheboygan. Emma Lou was preceded in death by her husband, Willard, in 2000. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, September 12, 2006, at the Champagne Funeral Chapel of Caseville.
