Sunday, May 7, 2006 Theresa Jeanette Puvalowski Theresa Jeanette Puvalowski, 65, of Eastpointe, died Friday, May 5, 2006, in Grosse Pointe. She was born July 1, 1940 in Harbor Beach. Mrs. Puvalowski was employed with Fisher Dynamics of St. Clair Shores. She enjoyed watching the Blue Angels at the air show and airplanes. Relatives said she loved her cat, Fred, and also spending time with her grandchildren. She is survived by her children, Sharlene (Steven) Barr and David (Beth) Puvalowski; siblings, Franklin "Hank" (Shirley) Lackowski, Fran (Robert) Becking, Evelyn Pereyk, Virginia (Ernie) Watchowski, Ervin (Jeanette) Lackowski and Sylvia (Chris) Bartolotta; grandchildren, Andrew Harris, Danielle Harris, Scott and Symantha Barr, Alisa and Christy Puvalowski. She was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Julia Lackowski; and siblings, Rose Collins, Riamond Lackowski, Ed Lackowski, Selma Geiger, Richard Lackowski, and Walter Hill. Buchler, 93, of Caseville, died Tuesday, May 9, 2006, at Huron County Medical Care Facility in Bad Axe. She was born March 26, 1913 in Midland County to the late Louis and Mary (Blumer) Harms. At age 17 she moved to Mt. Clemens for work. She found employment at Mt. Clemens Pottery where she also met her future husband. Esther and Michael Buchler were married April 25, 1936 in Mt. Clemens. Esther worked at Mt. Clemens Pottery until she began raising her family. She retired to Caseville in 1973. She was a charter member of the Caseville Retirement Club and an active member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. She enjoyed gardening, taking care of her home and family, and playing cards. Esther is survived by her son, Ralph (Shirley) Buchler, of Attica; and daughters, Maxine (Jim) Feller, of Las Vegas, Nevada, and Susan (Charles) Niemczyk, of Clinton Township; grandchildren, Lynn, Shelley, Jennifer and Michael; great-granddaughters, Angela, Rachel and Rebecca; brother, Raymond (Phyllis) Harms, of Merrill; and sisters, Marion Delaney, of Midland, Marge (Elmer) Craig, of Midland, and Eleanor Crombez, of Mt. Clemens. She was preceded in death by her husband, Michael, on February 28, 2006; and daughter, Betty Feller. Merl L. Carson Merl L. "Butch" Carson, 68, of Bad Axe, passed away on Monday, May 8, 2006, at Huron Medical Center in Bad Axe. He was born on July 12, 1937 in Bad Axe, son of the late Walter and Frieda (Klinefelt) Carson. He married Leona Jaworski on September 1958 in Pontiac. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Bad Axe. He was retired from Thumb Tool in Bad Axe and enjoyed hand held games and collecting Hot Wheels. He is survived by his wife, Leona Carson, of Bad Axe; one son, Jeff (Cindy) Carson, of Bad Axe; one daughter, Cheryl (Clifford) Schultz, of Bad Axe; one brother, Edward (Janice) Carson, of Bad Axe; one sister, Phyllis Jaworski, of Bad Axe; four grandchildren, Rebecca (Greg) Braun, Raeann Carson, Traci Carson, and Aaron Schultz, all of Bad Axe; one great-granddaughter, Jalyn Nicole Braun, of Bad Axe; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one son, Scott Carson; and one brother, Willis Carson. Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Thursday, May 11, 2006, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Bad Axe. A scripture service will be offered at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home. Grace E. Dumaw Grace E. Dumaw, 87, of Kinde, passed away on Monday, May 8, 2006, at Tendercare in Cass City. She was born on June 27, 1918 in Bad Axe, daughter of the late John and Louise Sawyer. She married Arthur E. Dumaw on December 28, 1938 at the Pinnebog United Methodist Church. He preceded her in death on July 7, 1998. She worked at Huron Memorial Hospital as a nurse and therapy aide. She was an active member and Sunday school teacher at the Bad Axe Free Methodist Church. She is survived by one son, Darel (Linda) Dumaw, of Elkton; one daughter-in-law, Dorothy Young, of Pigeon; two granddaughters, Deanna (Steven) Stonecipher, of Kinde, Danielle (Charles) Stanton, of Kinde; three great-grandchildren, Michael Stonecipher, and Tyler Stonecipher, both of Kinde, Kaylynn Stanton, of Kinde; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by one son, Douglas Dumaw; one brother, John Sawyer; and one sister, Phyllis Campbell. Haley, 79, of Elkton, died Monday evening, May 8, 2006, at Bay Special Care Hospital, Bay City. She was born September 13, 1926 in Detroit and moved to the Ubly area in her youth with her parents, the late Arthur and Marguerite (Morrison) Marshall. Shortly after high school on September 22, 1945, she and Donald L. Haley were united in marriage at the First Baptist Church in Bad Axe. They spent many winters in Florida. Don preceded her in death on August 7, 1983. Florence was a lifelong and very active member of the First Baptist Church of Bad Axe. She was an avid golfer for many years, golfing on several leagues. She enjoyed art, creating many paintings herself. Gardening was also a hobby of hers, especially growing roses. Surviving are three sons, Roger (Val) Haley, of Grant Township, Randy (Cheryl) Haley, of Elkton, and R. William (Kerri) Haley, of Shields; six grandchildren, Gretchen (Todd) Roestel, Kristi (Greg) Hanby, Meghann (Matt) Herford, Casey (Carmen) Haley, Marla (Anthony) Kopah, and Joshua Haley; and eight great-grandchildren, Travis, Austin, Kendal, Ian, Tristen, Dante, Willow and Orion. Preceding her in death was a daughter, Linda; and a sister, Ruth Cramer. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Thursday, May 11, 2006, at First Baptist Church of Bad Axe. The Rev. Hartman Nola Gladys Hartman, 92, of Fort Myers, Florida, passed away Tuesday, January 31, 2006, at Shady Rest Care Pavilion in Fort Myers, Florida. She was born in Wakefield Corners, Colfax Township, Bad Axe, on December 31, 1913, one of nine children born to Melvin and Grace (Wakefield) Dean. She was married and divorced from Roy Neal Hartman. Nola worked for Merritt McBride in the bar in Pigeon (now Main Street Cafe). She then managed the lunch cafe, which eventually became Elsie's Cafe. When Merritt McBride became sheriff of Huron County, Roy and Nola purchased the bar from him, and lunches and alcohol were served there in the 1940s. Her next job was managing the kitchen and dining room at the brand new Scenic Golf & Country Club in 1950. As this was a seasonal job, when an offer was made in 1953 to run the Irwin Hotel on the corner next to Kritzman's in Bad Axe, she accepted. She then left the area, taking a position as supervisor at General Motors on Grand River in Detroit. She then moved to Ann Arbor, accepting a job as supervisor at the Michigan union. Following that, she worked as supervisor of the dining room and kitchen at Sherwood on the Hill in Gagetown, then to the Bella Vista in Caseville in the same capacity, and then on to the Port Austin Radar Station as a civilian cook, until her retirement in 1970. She is survived by one son, Roy James and Margaret Ann Hartman, of Pigeon; two grandchildren, Stacie Lynn and Robert Kingsbury, of Livonia, and Michael Warren and Dawn Hartman, of Canton; two great-grandchildren, Olivia Lynn Hartman and Gregory Michael Hartman; three sisters, Ellen Knight, of Greensboro, North Carolina, Ada Binder, of Pigeon, and Marjorie Koslowski, of Flint; one brother, Ray Dean, of Harrison. She was preceded in death by five brothers and sisters. A private graveside service was conducted on May 6 at Colfax Cemetery in Bad Axe. Thursday, May 11, 2006 Mary Jean Thiel Mary Jean Thiel, 64, of Pigeon, died Wednesday morning, May 10, 2006, at Tendercare in Cass City. She was born February 9, 1942 at Hubbard Hospital in Bad Axe to the late John and Frances (Kleido) Thiel. Mary Jean enjoyed visiting with friends and family. She was a member of St. Francis Borgia Catholic Church in Pigeon. Surviving are her Aunt Marge Kleido, of Pigeon, and several cousins. Preceding her in death were two brothers, Richard and Bernie Thiel. A Funeral Mass will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Friday, May 12, 2006, at St. Francis Borgia Catholic Church in Pigeon with burial in the church cemetery. Zeese, 82, of Ithaca, died Tuesday, May 9, 2006, at his home. He was born March 13, 1924 in LaPorte, Indiana, the son of Earl and Fannie Zeese. He married Shirley L. Bassett on March 13, 1944 in Plymouth. Mr. Zeese recently moved to Ithaca after living 23 years in New Port Richey, Florida. He lived in Port Austin and Lincoln Park prior to that. He was a member of the St. Louis United Methodist Church and served in the U.S. Army as a Staff Sergeant in Burma during World War II. He also worked at Mobil Oil Company in Trenton for 28 years. Earl liked collecting Moon and Stars glassware and really enjoyed living in the local area. Surviving are his loving wife of 62 years, Shirley; two sons, Charles (Linda) Zeese, of Trenton, and Craig Zeese, of St. Louis; one granddaughter, Bryony Zeese, of Dearborn; one sister, Eileen Pieplow; and two brothers, Edward and Eldon Zeese. A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 20, 2006, at the St. Louis United Methodist Church with Pastor Lillian French officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Louis United Methodist Church or the Gratiot County Commission on Aging. Helen J. Hatlas Helen J. Hatlas passed away on Friday, March 10, 2006. A memorial service will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 20, 2006, at St. Columbkille Catholic Church, Sheridan Corners, Ubly. Father Joe Griffin, pastor, will officiate. (See her obituary on Sunday, March 12, 2006) Friday, May 12, 2006 Genevieve "Genny" Buschlen Genevieve "Genny" Buschlen, 70, of Pigeon, died Wednesday, May 10, 2006, at Henry Ford Hospital, Detroit. She was born September 20, 1935 in Chandler Township at the home of her parents, Amanda (Wurst) Schuette and the late Arnold Schuette. She lived in the Elkton/Pigeon area all her life. On May 24, 1958, she was united in marriage to LeRoy L. Buschlen at St. John's Lutheran Church, Berne. He preceded her in death on April 1, 2005. Genny had been a teller at the Pigeon State Bank and Bay Port Bank for a number of years before taking a position at Mutual Savings and Loan in Pigeon leaving there in 1981. She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Linkville, and Ladies Aide, also working and making posters to advertise the fall church bazaar. She enjoyed making quilts and sewing children's clothes and doll outfits for her granddaughters. Surviving are her son, Tom (Laura) Buschlen, of Pigeon; six grandchildren, Lauren, Taylor, Kristen, Jessica, Katie and Emily; two great-granddaughters, Laura and Nevaeh; her mother, Amanda Schuette, of Pigeon; two brothers, Harvey (Doris) Schuette, and Orville (Millie) Schuette, both of Pigeon; two sisters, Lorraine Metzger, of Grant Township, and Noel (Ron) Wichert, of Pigeon; and a sister-in-law, Diane Schuette, of Pigeon. Preceding her in death were her brother, Arnold "Junior" Schuette, and her brother-in-law, Don Metzger. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Monday, May 15, 2006, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Linkville. The Rev. Lee Wenskay, pastor, will officiate with burial in the church cemetery. She was born May 5, 1931 in Cass City, the daughter of Albert and Anna (Miller) Taylor. Uleta graduated from Elkton High School. On March 8, 1952, she married Willard Young. He preceded her in death in July 2003. She worked at DeWitt Schools for many years as a cook. Uleta was a member of the Red Hat Society, the Hobby Club and card clubs. She enjoyed her crafts, games, travel and her family. She is survived by two sons, Larry, of Grand Ledge, and Dale and Cindy, of Sparta; two daughters, Debra and John Nixon, of Lansing, and Sue and David Wood, of Beavercreek, Ohio; 11 grandchildren, Nicole, Michelle, Tom and Heidi, Tim and Ashley Young, Sara, Amanda, Amy and Kelli Nixon, Hanna, Alexander and Nicholas Wood; great-granddaughter, Elizabeth Young; sister, Delores and Don Cox, of Roscommon; sister-in-law, LaVerda Young, of Elkton. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Friday, May 12, 2006, at Redeemer United Methodist Church, 13980 Schavey Road, DeWitt, with the Rev.
