Sunday, December 10, 2006 – No obituaries reported Monday, December 11, 2006 James “Jim” Herman Lahr James "Jim" Lahr, 70, of Harbor Beach and previously of Roseville and Mio, passed away suddenly Thursday, December 7, 2006, at Harbor Beach Community Hospital. James Herman Lahr was born July 23, 1936, the son of Herman and Ethel (Benn) Lahr. Jim was a 1954 graduate of a Lutheran High School in Detroit. He was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Harbor Beach. Jim married Irene Frances Jurn on February 3, 1962 in Imlay City. He had lived in Roseville since 1987 and had resided in Harbor Beach the past two years. Jim served in the U.S. Army and National Guard in the late 1950's and early 1960's. Jim is survived by his wife, Irene, of Harbor Beach; three daughters, Debra (Calvin) Lahr-Hass, of Commerce Township, Susan Lahr, of Roseville, Diane Lahr-Barclay, of Harbor Beach; two grandchildren, Shena Barclay and Rebeca Barclay; two brothers, Carl (Norma) Lahr, and Daniel Lahr , both of Allenton; and brothers-in-law, Robert (Margaret) Jurn, of Imlay City, and Richard (Ellen) Jurn, of Imlay City. Jim was preceded in death by a daughter, Carol Jean Lahr; and a sister, Marilyn Tonovich. A funeral service was conducted at 11 a.m. today, December 11, 2006, at Muir Brothers Funeral Home, 225 N. Main Street, Imlay City followed by interment in Imlay Township Cemetery. The Rev. Gregory Eiler, of Zion Lutheran Church in Harbor Beach and St. John Lutheran Church in Port Hope, officiated. Arthur W. Sengstock Arthur W. Sengstock, 85, of Port Hope, passed away on Sunday, December 10, 2006, at Port Huron Hospital. Born September 30, 1921 in Saginaw, he was the son of the late William and Helen (Radatz) Sengstock. On February 7, 1942, Arthur and Lena Koglin were united in marriage in Port Hope. He was a retired employee of Edward White Construction Company working in Bay City, Saginaw, and Detroit. Art was a former member of the Port Hope-Grindstone Sportsman Club. Surviving are his wife, Lena, of Port Hope; their children, Arthur Sengstock, Jr. and his wife, Betty, of Conroe, Texas, Brenda Friedland and her husband, Laverne, of Port Hope, Joyce Harwood and her husband, Larry, of Port Hope, Elaine Reinke and her husband, Roy, of Port Hope, Lola Smith and her husband, Robert, of Warren, Darla Pankow and her husband, Ponch, of Port Hope, Deanna May and her husband, Dan, of Port Hope, and Daryl Sengstock and his fiance, Kim, of Port Hope; 21 grandchildren; and 33 great-grandchildren. Art was preceded in death by two stepbrothers, Emil and Reinhold Sengstock. Funeral services will be Tuesday, December 12, 2006, at 1 p.m. in the Ramsey Funeral Home, Harbor Beach, with Rev. Paula Timm, of the United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery, Port Hope. Visitation will be from 2-9 p.m. on Monday and 11:30 a.m. until the time of the service at 1 p.m. on Tuesday. Ervin D. Thompson Ervin D. Thompson, 90, of Pigeon, died Saturday morning, December 9, 2006, at Scheurer Hospital, Long Term Care, Pigeon. He was born December 31, 1915 in Oliver Township at the home of his parents, the late David and Anna (Heck) Thompson. On October 8, 1941, he was inducted into the U.S. Army and served in Europe and the battles of Normandy, Rhineland and Ardennes during World War II. He was united in marriage to Ida M. Renn on November 10, 1944 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Elkton. They moved to the Detroit area shortly after his discharge, and later to Roseville where they lived and raised their family. Ervin had been employed at Budd Wheel Company in Detroit for 31 years retiring in 1978. They moved back to Huron County in 1998. Ida preceded him in death on February 5, 2002. He was a former member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Roseville, and a current member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, Elkton. He enjoyed gardening, working in his yard, and hunting with his brothers-in-law. Surviving are three sons, Robert Thompson, of Roseville, Douglas (Karen) Thompson, of East Pointe, and Jeffrey Thompson, of Beverly Hills; four sisters, Mary Hazard, of Bad Axe, Zelma (Herman) Baur, of Souletown, Ruth Gilbert, of Owendale, and Bessie (Jim) Champagne, of Elkton; and a brother, Loren Thompson, of Florida. Preceding him in death were three brothers, Raymond, Robert, and Henry Thompson. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Thursday, December 14, 2006, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Elkton. Goretski, 61, of Scottsdale, Arizona and formerly of Bad Axe, passed away Thursday, November 16, 2006, in Arizona following a heart attack. He was born February 5, 1945 in Bad Axe, son of Robert F. Goretski and Dorothy L. (Goretski) Clancey. He graduated from Bad Axe High School in 1963 and then served in the U.S. Army. In 1969, he joined the Michigan State Police where he worked for the next 30 years. He became a detective who worked on many high profile cases. After retiring in 1999, and a brief stint as a private investigator, he moved to Scottsdale, Arizona to enjoy the retirement lifestyle, which for Leonard featured golf, a game he loved, and a dream home in McDowell Mountain Ranch. His retirement did not last long, and in 2003 he became a partner in the ShipRite Business located on Market Street in DC Ranch. He loved the work and particularly enjoyed the many customers he met and the relationships he developed. He would always go out of his way to be helpful and he brought a smile to work each day. He is survived by his son, Leonard Goretski, of Scottsdale, Arizona; daughter, Wendy Goretski and her husband, Steve Biellak, of Sunnyvale, California; two grandchildren, Cassidy and Grant Biellak, of Sunnyvale, California; father, Robert Goretski and his wife, Pauline, of Bad Axe; two brothers, Michael Goretski and his wife, Bonnie, of Bad Axe, Ron Goretski and his wife, Kimberly Chaisson, of Elk Rapids; his extended family, Debbie Kerr-Minor and her husband, Richard Minor, of Scottsdale, Arizona; his business partner, Tom Rooney and his wife, Gilda, of Scottsdale, Arizona. He was preceded in death by his mother, Dorothy L. (Goretski) Clancey. A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Friday, December 15, 2006, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Bad Axe. Officiating will be Fr. James Carlson, pastor. Interment will be in the church cemetery with military and Michigan State Police rituals. Prodell, 81, passed away December 8, 2006. Paul retired from GMPG Pontiac Division. He proudly served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a life member of the Highland VFW Post No. 9914. He was the beloved husband of the late Lillian M. Prodell; cherished father of Paula (Steve) Gillen, Wendy (Steve) Hewitt, Sheila (Robert) Schenk, and Joyce Steele; grandfather of Aaron (Heather) Bowerman, Laura Bowerman, Andrea Caswell, Kim Pittenturf, and Chris Hewitt; great grandfather of Erin Bowerman and Madison Caswell; also survived by siblings, Elmer (Ruth) Prodell and Ruth DeGreef; and many relatives and friends. Vera Mae Schumacher Vera Mae Schumacher, 85, of Sandusky, died Monday, December 11, 2006, at Marlette Community Hospital in Marlette. She was born November 29, 1921 in Minden City, the daughter of the late Milton and Jessie (Cleland) Thompson. She was a lifelong area resident, a member of Sandusky First United Methodist Church, and UMW, a former member of the United Methodist Church, Minden City. Vera married Eli Schumacher on September 21, 1940 in Minden City. He died December 18, 1980. She is survived by children, Melvin and Sharon Schumacher, of Colorado, Nancy Schumacher, Russell and Beverly Schumacher, all of Sandusky, David and Peggy Schumacher, of Oklahoma, Dennis and Linda Schumacher, of Ruth, and Gary and Chris Schumacher, of Sandusky; 13 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; and one great great grandchild. A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Thursday, December 14, 2006, at Sandusky First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Colin Stover officiating. Williston Sr., 77, of Essexville, died Sunday, December 10, 2006, following a lengthy illness. He was born February 22, 1929 to the late Harlan and Dorothy Williston in Flint and was raised in Bad Axe and Bay City. During the Korean War, he served his country in the U.S. Navy as Petty Officer 3rd Class. After being discharged from the service, Wade was employed in the family auto parts business, Bill Williston and Sons, in Bad Axe, before retiring from H & H Wheel in 1994. His favorite pastime was hunting and fishing with his many friends. On June 25, 1977, he married the former Lillian Knack in Port Austin. She survives along with his four children, Wade (Yukie) Williston, Jr. of Essexville, Mary Beth (Dana) Jones, of Arizona, Jay (Kim) Williston, of New Hampshire, and Mary (John) Warren, of Auburn; 11 grandchildren, James, Kevin, Ashley, Michael, A.J., Candice, Matthew, Stephen, Stacie, Daniel and Michelle; two great grandchildren, Trent and Brynne; two sisters, Phyllis Clutter and Janet (Henry) Saikin; his brother, William (Clara) Williston; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Veronica Braun; his sister, Shirley Kay Pasant; and his two brothers, David and James Williston. Memorial contributions may be designated for the Bay County Veterans Council or to the Association of Interfaith Ministries (AIM). Wednesday, December 13, 2006 Henry T. J. Farver Henry T. J. Farver, 90, of Elkton, died Tuesday morning, December 12, 2006, at Home Sweet Home in Pigeon. He was born October 5, 1916 at the home of his parents, the late Thomas and Elizabeth (Nelson) Farver in Chandler Township. Henry grew up on a farm and in 1942, he joined the U.S. Navy serving on the USS California and the USS Thetis Bay in the Asiatic Pacific. He returned to Elkton in 1945. On August 2, 1947, he was united in marriage to Marguerite Steinman Schaaf at the First Methodist Church in Pigeon. Henry lived and farmed in Chandler Township all his life. He had also worked at Alton Manufacturing in Pigeon for 15 years. He was a member of the Elkton United Methodist Church, the Carpenter-Dorsch VFW Post No. 6013, Elkton, and he enjoyed deer hunting and ice fishing. Surviving are five sons, Thomas (Janette) Farver, of Elkton, Glen (Ardra) Schaaf, of Pigeon, Leo (Patricia) Schaaf, of Greensboro, North Carolina, Carl (Georgia) Schaaf, of Beaufort, South Carolina, and Berten Schaaf, of Pigeon; his daughter-in-law, Mary Popham, of Bad Axe; 10 grandchildren, Tom (Lynn) Farver and Tanette Farver, John (Debbie) Schaaf, Becki (Paul) DiPasquale, Angie (Jason) Lewis, Lesley (Justin) Lang, Scott (Elizabeth) Schaaf, Courtney Schaaf and Nathan Schaaf, and Ryan (Julia) Schaaf. Also surviving are eight great grandchildren, TJ, Shelby and Brady Farver, Zachary and Benjamin Schaaf, Madeline and Jenna Lang, and Will Schaaf; two brothers, Floyd Farver, of Elkton, and Clifford Farver, of Oak Beach; and three sisters, Flossie Maynard, of Pinnebog, Luella Connors, of Filion, and Ulla Snider, of Bad Axe. Floren Niemic Mr. Floren Niemic, 85, of Ubly, died Sunday, December 10, 2006, at Brian's House Hospice Center in Davison. He was born April 10, 1921 in Richmond, son of the late Thomas and Anna (Worek) Niemic. He married Margaret Nowicki on October 30, 1943 at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Detroit. Floren worked for Imerman Screw Products for 35 years retiring in 1983. He was a World War II Army Veteran serving in the European Theatre in the Medical Corp. He was a parishioner at St. Mary Catholic Church in Parisville for 23 years. Floren loved to play pinochle and tinker on tractors in his shed. He is survived by his wife, Margaret, of Ubly; one daughter, Kathy Boehmer and her husband, Jon, of Lapeer; one son, David Niemic and his wife, Carrie, of Perrysburg, Ohio; eight grandchildren; two great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Joseph, Norbert, Rudolph and Harry Niemiec; three sisters, Etta Carter, Helen Tempinski and a baby sister, Phyllis Niemiec. A Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, December 14, 2006, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Parisville. The Rev. Jerzy Dobosz, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Smith, 94, of Snover, died Monday, December 11, 2006, in Sanilac County Medical Care Facility, Sandusky. She was born August 31, 1912 in Pontiac to Erwin and Cloa (Francisco) Sadler. She married Charles Smith on June 19, 1935 in Snover. He died April 30, 1959. Luella helped her husband on the family farm. After his death, Luella worked at Cass City Hospital and then Hills & Dales Hospital in Cass City. Luella loved music and was able to play many instruments by ear. She played piano, accordion and harmonica. Luella played piano in the ballroom above Kritzman’s Department Store. She played piano in a kitchen band with Shabbona Extension. Luella traveled extensively by train and plane including trips to California, Hawaii and North Carolina. She was a member of Shabbona United Methodist Church, Shabbona Extension and Sanilac County Farm Bureau. Luella loved children and especially loved and enjoyed her grandchildren. Luella is survived by her children, Elinor (Richard) Loeding, of Snover, Marvin (Connie) Smith, of Palm Coast, Florida; grandchildren, Diane (Phil) Matusik, Dwight (Rita) Loeding, Danette (Mark) Bolton, Debra (Paul) Auten, David Loeding, Michelle (Dion) Davis, and Mark Smith; great grandchildren, Rik, Daniel (Sabrina), Elizabeth, Brett Loeding, Meleah, Rachel, Chaz, Shane Auten, Chance, Macklin, Caleb Bolton, Mitchell, Megan, Matthew Davis; great great grandson, Trace; sister-in-law, Helen (Harold) Bentley, of Saginaw; many nieces and nephews. Swartentruber Elizabeth Viola Swartzentruber, 90, passed away Tuesday, December 12, 2006, at the Huron County Medical Care Facility near Bad Axe with her family by her side. She was born October 8, 1916 in Elkton, daughter of the late Jacob and Mary (Boshart) Christner. On October 8, 1939, she was united in marriage to Vernon Swartzentruber at the Pigeon River Mennonite Church in Pigeon. They lived in Ontario, Canada for nine years before moving to the family farm in Sebewaing where they lived for many years. After retiring, they moved to their home in Pigeon. Vernon preceded her in death on July 17, 2001. Elizabeth was an active member of Pigeon River Mennonite Church since her baptism at the age of 12. She also enjoyed attending Fairhaven Mennonite Church and Vassar Mennonite Church. She valued every moment spent with family and friends visiting and playing games. A homemaker and assistant on the family farm, a saleswoman, and a constant witness to her faith, Elizabeth was always lending her hand and heart to anyone in need. She helped both the elderly and the youth in whatever they may have needed, whether it be a ride to church or Sunday school, a hot meal, or being there with an open mind and an open heart when someone lost their way. She was a true believer that faith would lead you home. Elizabeth was a strong and vibrant woman who will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her. Elizabeth is survived by two sons, Leon (Susan) Schwartzentruber and Harold (Connie) Swartzentruber, both of Ubly; three daughters, Joyce (Fred) Marmion, of New Boston, Elva Mast, of Kalispell, Montana, and Melva (Tom) Barstow, of Grosse Ile; 14 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; two sisters, Marion Nafzinger and Dorothy (Maurice) Nafzinger, both of Archbold, Ohio; a sister-in- law, Elmina Christner, of Goshen, Indiana; and a brother-in-law, Glen King, of Sarasota, Florida. She was preceded in death by a great granddaughter, Angel Bensinger; a great grandson, Dylan Schwartzentruber; six brothers, Jesse, William, Alvin, Ervin, Louis and Emanuel Christner; four sisters, Alta Piehl, Margaret King and Bertha and Martha Christner. Funeral services will take place at 2 p.m. on Friday, December 15, 2006, at the Pigeon River Mennonite Church with Pastor Luke Yoder and Pastor Wayne Keim officiating. Adams John Leslie Adams, 88, of Plymouth, passed away Wednesday, December 13, 2006, at St. Mary's Mercy Hospital in Livonia. He was born September 20, 1918 in Stanton Township to the late Edward and Etta (Wagoner) Adams. He was united in marriage to Evelyn Whitney on August 13, 1940. Mr. Adams was a retired United Methodist Pastor of United Church of Christ who enjoyed fishing and all sports. Surviving are his wife, Evelyn, of Plymouth; one son, John (Joanne) Adams, of Canton; one daughter, Sue (Robert) Peterson, of Canton; one granddaughter, Kristen (Andrew) White, of Plymouth; two great grandchildren, Adam and Drew White. He was preceded in death by three sisters, Carolyn Hamman, Lucille Thorpe, and Mamie Adams; two brothers, Wagener and James Adams; two great grandchildren, Aiden Joseph White and Samuel Robert White. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. on Monday, December 18, 2006, at Pinnebog Methodist Church. Pastor Dave Freeland will officiate. Corrion, 53, of Bad Axe, passed away Wednesday, December 13, 2006, in Marlette Township from injuries sustained during an on-the-job accident. He was born August 2, 1953 in Bad Axe, son of the late James A. and Ethel M. (Rounds) Corrion. John married Patricia Gust on November 1, 1975 in the former Verona Hills Baptist Church. He worked for James Corrion Excavating from 1960-1976. He then became the owner/operator of Corrion Excavating from 1977-1995. He was currently the superintendent of Rooney Contracting in Bad Axe. He was a member of the National Construction Equipment Association and of the Elkton Missionary Church. John is survived by his wife, Patricia, of Bad Axe; one son, Steven (Maureen) Corrion, of Pigeon; one daughter, Samantha Corrion, of Elkton, Kentucky; one brother, James A. Corrion Jr., of Cass City; and one sister, Mary Beth Naggs, of Alabama. Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Monday, December 18, 2006, at the Elkton Missionary Church. Officiating will be the Rev. Reggie Courliss, pastor. Burial will be in Verona Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, from 2 to 9 p.m. on Sunday at the Kaufman Funeral Home in Bad Axe, and from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at 11 a.m. on Monday at the church. Edward Draves Edward Draves, 69, of Bad Axe, passed away Thursday, December 14, 2006, at Covenant Cooper Hospital in Saginaw. In keeping with his wishes, there will be no visitation. Arrangements are being handled by the Kaufman Funeral Home in Bad Axe. Edith B. Wiese Edith Belle Wiese, 91, of Caseville, died suddenly Tuesday, December 12, 2006, at Courtney Manor in Bad Axe. Edith was born in Lake Township on September 17, 1915 to the late William and Pearl (Nuttall) Langley. In 1936, she married George Jean Jr. in Detroit. After George's death, Edith married Edwin Wiese in 1972. Edwin died in 1992. Edith lived in Detroit from 1936 to 1948, when she returned to Caseville. Over the years she worked at La Blanc's Store and R & J Laundromat in Caseville until retiring in 1991. She was a member of the Caseville United Methodist Church. She is survived by a stepdaughter, Nancy (Neal) Jefferson, of Milford; two grandsons, Jimmy McElmurry and Monte Jenkins, both of Caseville; and many nieces, nephews and friends. She was preceded in death by her husbands, George and Edwin; daughters, Carol Kelso and Shelly Snider; and son, Al D. Jean. Edith's life will be remembered during the 11 a.m. service on Sunday, December 17, 2006, at Pinnebog United Methodist Church.
