Sunday, February 12, 2006 Vera Elizabeth Bateman Vera Elizabeth Bateman, 90, of Wheaton, Illinois and formerly of Port Austin, died Thursday, February 9, 2006, at her home. She was born in Schreiber, Ontario, Canada to the late Roy and Effie Gertrude (York) Hoskin on February 20, 1915. Vera married Albert Duke. He preceded her in death in 1957. She married Leon Bateman on January 23, 1970. He preceded her in death in 1988. Vera was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Bad Axe. She enjoyed golf, bridge, and spending time with her family. During the summer she lived in Port Austin and spent many winters in Cocoa Beach, Florida. She also lived with her sister in Wheaton, Illinois for eight years. Vera is survived by two daughters, Linda Walzak, of Wheaton, Illinois, and Barbara Brown, of Lombard, Illinois; one sister, Mima Basinski (Ralph), of Clio; five grandchildren, Troy (Nancy) Walzak, Todd (Trish) Walzak, Tracy (Jerry) Gleisner, and Terry Walzak (Trevor Englehardt), all of Chicago, and Sean Brown, of St. Louis, Missouri, and five great- grandchildren, Blake, Kyle, Davis, Kaytlyn, and Lucus. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Nellie Daly, and Flora Meyer, and four brothers, Harold, Harry, Fred, and Keith Hoskin. Funeral services will take place at noon on Monday, February 13, 2006, at MacAlpine Funeral Home in Bad Axe. The Rev. William Wright, pastor of the First United Methodist Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Colfax Township Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until the time of the service on Monday. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association. Mary Jane L. Bardell Brown Mary Jane L. (Bardell) Brown, 66, of Paducah, Kentucky, passed away Monday, February 6, 2006, at Lourdes Hospital in Kentucky. She is the daughter of the late William O. and Lorraine (Apley) Bardell, Glasgow, Kentucky. She is survived by several relatives in this area. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Cremation has taken place. Arrangements are being handled by the MacAlpine Funeral Home in Bad Axe. Rex L. Cox Rex L. Cox, 80, of Cass City, died Friday morning, February 10, 2006, at Phoenix Mountain Nursing Center in Phoenix, Arizona. He was born on September 8, 1925 in Traverse City to the late Murray and Lillie (Hunt) Cox. On April 14, 1945, he was united in marriage to Lucille M. Miller at the Salem United Methodist Church in Pigeon. They moved to the Dearborn area shortly after they married, where they raised their family. In 1990, they moved back to the area, settling in Cass City. During the mid-'50s, Rex opened Rex's Shell Service on Michigan Avenue in Dearborn. In 1968, he began his career at Ford Motor Company, retiring in 1988 for health reasons. Rex enjoyed traveling throughout the United States, spending the last 15 winters in Arizona. While at home, he attended the Cass City United Methodist Church. Surviving are his wife, Lucille; his children and their spouses, Deanna and Norman Aronson, of Whitmore Lake, Dale and Lynn Cox, of Hamburg, and Marsha and Tim Healy, of Clarkston; six grandchildren, Kristin, Stacy, Douglas, Jeffrey, Tracey, and Timothy; two great- grandchildren, Jake and Maya; two sisters, Lila (Donald) Stover, of Comstock Park, and Ethel (Bill) Kunze, of Traverse City; and his sister-in-law, Elayne Cox, of Traverse City. Preceding him in death was a brother, Harold Cox. There will be no visitation at this time. A memorial service will be scheduled in the spring. Burial will be in the Grandlawn Cemetery in Pigeon. Stoutenburg, 74, of Cass City, died Saturday, February 11, 2006, at Northwood Meadows Medical Care Unit in Cass City. He was born on February 3, 1932 in Snover to Jay and Hazel (McNaughton) Stoutenburg. He married Ellen Miller on May 1, 1954 in Pigeon. Eldon worked for 35 years for the Village of Cass City DPW. He was a member of the Cass City United Methodist Church and the Laymen's Club. Eldon was a member of the Elkland Township Fire Department for 17 years. He coached many softball and baseball teams and was a pioneer of the Women's Softball League. Eldon volunteered at Bay Shore Camp and was instrumental in many building projects. He always said he didn't belong to any club, he just helped all of them — in particular, in any project related to the park or youth. One year, he received the Tuscola County Friend of Youth Award. Eldon never missed any sporting event of his children's or grandchildren's while he was physically able to attend. He was very proud of Cass City. Eldon is survived by his wife, Ellen; children, Ed (Susan) Stoutenburg, of Cass City, Elaine Stoutenburg, of Columbiaville, and Earney (Wendi) Stoutenburg, of Penryn, California; grandchildren, Matthew, Nicholas, Jarod, Jeffrey, Eric, and Natalie; sister, Dorothy Kain, of Florida; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother, Max Stoutenburg. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, February 14, 2006, at Cass City United Methodist Church with the Rev. George Ward officiating. Interment will be in Elkland Township Cemetery. Haag, 92, of Pigeon, died Saturday, February 11, 2006, at the Scheurer Hospital in Pigeon following a lengthy illness. He was born April 8, 1913 near Sebewaing, son of the late Henry and Martha (Nietzke) Haag. He was united in marriage to Ida M. Deming on February 18, 1934 at St. John Lutheran Church in Kilmanagh. She preceded him in death on August 20, 1992. Art had been a farmer in the Pigeon area for many years. He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Kilmanagh and had been very active there serving on many of the church boards. He loved to hunt and fish. Surviving are three daughters and their husbands, Shirley Mae (Kenneth) Hill, of Caseville, Marilyn Kay (Vearl) Beard, of Prescott, Joanne Rosemary (Gordon) Bingham, of Fairgrove; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; one sister and four brothers, Florence (William) Kannenberg, of Luverne, Minnesota, Oscar (Esther) Haag, Clarence (Donna) Haag, Norbert (Marilyn) Haag, all of Sebewaing, Martin Haag, of Gibralter; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one son, Ronald Haag; two sisters, Edna Truemner, Alice Gallow; four brothers, infant Elmer Haag, Carl, Herman, and Walter Haag. Hunt, 60, of Bad Axe, died Saturday evening, February 11, 2006, at the Huron County Medical Care Facility. He was born September 11, 1945 in Marlette to the late Duane and Virginia (Wilcox) Hunt. Duane grew up south of Ubly and attended Ubly High School, graduating in 1964. On October 19, 1968, he was united in marriage to Barbara Watts at St. Felix Catholic Church in Pinnebog. They made their home in Elkton. Duane was employed at Active Industries at that time as a HiLo driver retiring in 2002 for health reasons after more than 34 years of service. In 1998, they moved to Bad Axe. Duane was a member of the Bad Axe Knights of Columbus and enjoyed bowling. He also enjoyed going to tractor pulls, sometimes pulling with his Dodge 4X4 pickup, bringing home several trophies. Surviving are his wife, Barb; two sons, Jason and his fiancée, Pam Wolfe, of Bay Port, and Eric and his wife, Samantha, of Sebewaing; six grandchildren, Cory, Kendal, Jay, Kyle, Jade and Fiona; three brothers, Richard (Darlene) Hunt, of Ubly, Bob (Bonnie) Hunt, of North Branch, and Ron (Jan) Hunt, of Phoenix, Arizona, and two sisters, Eva (Bill) Starkes, of Shields, and Sue (Rich) Lithgoe, of Phoenix, Arizona; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, February 14, 2006, at the Champagne Funeral Chapel in Elkton. She was born November 21, 1908 in Elkton to the late William and Herlanda Ewald. She was united in marriage in March of 1928 to Graydon Shuart. He preceded her in death in 1963. Mrs. Shuart spent most of her life in Bad Axe. She and her husband, Graydon, owned and operated Golden Rule Dairy in Bad Axe for many years. She was a member of the Bad Axe Assembly of God Church for 56 years and she taught Sunday school many of those years. She enjoyed her family, sewing, reading, traveling, walking and serving the Lord. She is survived by five children, Allene Walker, Jean (Jack) Rochefort, Janet (Joe) Rotger, all of Bad Axe, Patricia (Art) Ortega, of Port Austin, and Clark (Veniece) Shuart, of Filion; daughter-in-law, Janie Shuart, of Bad Axe; 21 grandchildren; 58 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one son, Jim (Ace) Shuart; one son-in-law, Bill Walker; and two grandchildren. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, February 15, 2006, at Evangel Life Assembly of God Church in Bad Axe. The Rev. Robert Smith will officiate. Adkins, 50, of Redford, died Sunday morning, February 12, 2006, in her sleep at her home following a suspected acute heart attack. She was born August 6, 1955 at Hubbard Hospital in Bad Axe to Norman Leitch and the late Dorothy (Morgan) Leitch. Janet grew up in Redford and lived there all her life. On February 25, 1983, she was united in marriage to Ronald Adkins in Redford. Surviving are her husband, Ronald; two sons, Bradley and Derek, at home; her dad, Norman Leitch, of Pinnebog; two sisters, Nancy (Jim) Crockrell, of South Lyon, and Sharon (Mark) Otley, of New Hudson; her brother, Denis (Barbara) Leitch, of Jackson; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Thursday, February 16, 2006, at the Champagne Funeral Chapel in Elkton. The Rev. Korn, 91, of Port Austin, died Sunday, February 12, 2006, at Scheurer Hospital in Pigeon. She was born on December 12, 1914 in Dwight Township, daughter of the late Bruno and Anastasia (Goretski) Klosawski. Theresa married Edwin J. Korn on July 6, 1935 in Detroit. He preceded her in death on January 14, 1976. Theresa attended Carpenter School in Dwight Township and Port Crescent School. As an adult, she lived in Detroit for 16 years before moving back to the Port Austin area with her family. She worked as a cook in the Harbor House restaurant, Chuck and Jane's restaurant, and at the Pte. Aux Barques Hotel. Theresa loved to cook and play cards with her friends. Theresa was lovingly known as "Grandma" around Port Austin by local teenagers since the 1950's. She was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church in Port Austin and of the American Legion Frank Horetski Post 499 Ladies Auxiliary in Port Austin. Theresa is survived by five children, Ed (Doreen) Korn, of Port Austin, Marlene (Jim) Gracey, of Bensonville, Illinois, Linda (Dick) Murawski, of Shelby Township, Rich (Jan) Korn, of Grand Rapids, and Don (Luanne) Korn, of Downey, California; 13 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her 12 brothers and sisters. A Funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. on Friday, February 17, 2006, at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Port Austin. Officiating will be the Rev. Wednesday, February 15, 2006 Stella Szeszycki "Sally Fisher" Sally Fisher, 89, of Port Austin, went to be with her Lord on Tuesday, February 14, 2006. Beloved wife of the late Stanley; dearest mother of Stan; grandmother of Debbie, Lynda, Chuck, Mike, Mark, Candie, AJ, and Dean; great-grandmother to 13 great-grandchildren. Sally was preceded in death by two children, Janice and Tony. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Saturday, February 18, 2006, at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Port Austin. Thompson, 62, of Swartz Creek, a former Bad Axe resident, died Sunday, February 12, 2006, at Hurley Hospital in Flint after a long illness. She was born on March 3, 1943 in Bad Axe, daughter of the late Van and Laura (Baslock) DesJardin. She was a graduate of Bad Axe High School and was a former member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Bad Axe. Surviving are two daughters, Patty Fischer and her husband, David, of Mount Morris, and Sandy Bryant, of Lennon; five grandchildren; and two sisters, Kay Rogers, and Fay Gilbert, both of Bad Axe. She was preceded in death by one sister, Linda Mayworm Edwards. In keeping with her wishes, private cremation services were conducted in Flint. Local information provided by the H. W. Walendzik Margery Evelyn Walendzik, 79, of Pigeon and formerly of Warren, died Sunday, February 12, 2006, at the Huron Medical Care Facility in Bad Axe. Born in Greenville on April 2, 1926, she was the daughter of the late Francis and Loya (Dudley) Yonkers. She graduated from South High School in Grand Rapids. After graduation from high school, Marge worked in Detroit at the Penobscot Building as a secretary. On June 14, 1947, she was united in marriage to Arthur F. Walendzik in Detroit. He survives her. Mr. and Mrs. Walendzik lived in Detroit until 1950, when they moved to Warren, where they raised their family together. She worked for the Warren Woods School District as high school secretary and in 1994, they moved to Pigeon. She became the secretary for Salem United Methodist Church in Pigeon and retired from that job on September 30, 2005. She also was a homemaker, enjoyed cooking, baking, crocheting, and was a superb seamstress. She was a member of Salem United Methodist Church in Pigeon. In addition to Arthur, her husband of more than 58 years, she is survived by four children, James Arthur (Sandra) Walendzik, of Leonard, Susan Carol (Scott) Meyersieck, of Pigeon, Timothy Francis (Pamela) Walendzik, of St. Clair, and Robin Beth (Joseph) Thomas, of Brighton; nine grandchildren, Bradley Francis Walendzik, Jeremy Alan (Amy) Meyersieck, Corey Edward Walendzik, Bridgette Ann (Michael) Elston, Adam Dudley Meyersieck, Kalon James Walendzik, Edgar Jordan Meyersieck, Wynne Courtney Walendzik, and Ryan Scott Kuhlow; a brother, Francis Dudley "Jim" Yonkers, of Florida; a sister, Mary Ann LeCureux, of Alabama; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a sister, Margaret Ruth "Peggy" Davis. Memorials may be made to Salem United Methodist Church. Thursday, February 16, 2006 Albert J. Randolph Albert Joseph Randolph, 85, of Harbor Beach, passed away unexpectedly at his home on Wednesday, February 15, 2006, following an apparent heart attack. Born in Atina, Italy, on July 6, 1920, he was the son of the late Dominic and Auretta (Marini) Randolph. Al became a U.S. Citizen in 1936. On August 10, 1946, Al and Gloria Pompei were united in marriage in Detroit. Together, they owned and operated the Randolph Family Restaurant in Harbor Beach from 1982 until they retired in 2004. Al was a veteran of World War II, serving in Hawaii and Okinawa in the U.S. Army. He was a former member and president of the Harbor Beach Lions Club, a member of the VFW post in Harbor Beach, and past commander and active member of the American Legion Post 197 of Harbor Beach, a member of Our Lady of Lake Huron Catholic Church in Harbor Beach, and attended the Community Coffee Club and enjoyed playing cards. Surviving are his wife, Gloria, of Harbor Beach; two sons, Dennis Randolph and his wife, Renada, of Battle Creek, and David Randolph, of Harbor Beach; five grandchildren, Paul, Steven, Scott, Kevin, and Savannah; and two sisters, Sylvia Swiecki, of Wyandotte, and Phillis Iacona, of Almont. Al was preceded in death by a daughter, Sharon. A funeral Mass for Al will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Saturday, February 18, 2006, at Our Lady of Lake Huron Catholic Church in Harbor Beach with burial in the church cemetery with military honors by the American Legion and VFW. Friday, February 17, 2006 Anne F. Van Saghi Anne F. Van Saghi, 90, of Harbor Beach and formerly of Bad Axe, passed away Wednesday, February 15, 2006, at Tendercare of Cass City following an extended illness. Born in Saskatchewan, Canada, on January 6, 1916, she was the daughter of the late Peter and Catherine Cenaga. Anne and Louis Van Saghi were united in marriage in 1940 in Ohio. Louis preceded her in death on October 29, 1989. Anne enjoyed traveling and bowling and was a retired optometrist assistant. She is survived by her children, Robert Van Saghi, of Denver, Colorado, Shirley Stevens and her husband, Ed, of Seaboard, North Carolina, Vicki Faucette, of Rochester, Minnesota, and Connie Jackson and her husband, Robert, of Harbor Beach; eight grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. Anne was preceded in death by 14 brothers and sisters. Services for Anne will be conducted at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, April 25, 2006, at the Ramsey Funeral Home in Harbor Beach. Burial has taken place at Our Lady of Lake Huron Church Cemetery in Harbor Beach. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. 1
