Sunday, January 15, 2006 Gladys Marie Darby Marie Darby, 90, of Bay Port and Caseville, passed away on Friday, January 13, 2006, at Scheurer Hospital in Pigeon after a long illness. Marie Short was born in Lafayette, Indiana on April 15, 1915, the daughter of the late Thomas and Nora (Lichlyter) Short. She was married to Lawrence Jack in Indianapolis, Indiana, and he passed away in 1956. She later married Francis E. "Frank" Darby in Detroit. Frank passed away on January 26, 1987. Marie was employed as a sales clerk in the Detroit area for many years prior to retiring to the area with her husband, Frank. She worked for Sam's Department Store, Federal's Department Store, and Sears Roebuck and Company. Marie was a former member and past president of the Caseville Retirement Club. She was also a former member of the Caseville Eagles Auxiliary No. 3690, former member and president of the Caseville American Legion Jean Post No. 543 Auxiliary, and former member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Pigeon Post No. 2236 Auxiliary. She was a former member of the Bay Port United Methodist Church. Mrs. Darby is survived by nine step- grandchildren; 16 step-great-grandchildren; and 8 step-great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by four step-children, Geneva Livingston, Juanita Folmer, Lawrence Jack and William Jack. She was also preceded in death by a sister and a brother. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. on Monday, January 16, 2006, at the Meyersieck-Bussema Funeral Home in Pigeon with the Rev. Douglas Mater, pastor of Bay Port United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in the Grand Lawn Cemetery in Pigeon. Friends may visit at the Meyersieck-Bussema Funeral Home in Pigeon on Sunday from 5-9 p.m., and on Monday from 11 a.m. until the time of the service at 1 p.m. Monday, January 16, 2006 Phyllis E. Engle Phyllis E. Engle, 85, of Colling Road in Caro, passed from this life on Friday, January 13, 2006, at Timberline Lodge, surrounded by her loving family. Phyllis Currie was born on April 14, 1920 in Harbor Beach, the daughter of the late Alec and Marguerite Currie. She was a graduate of Port Huron Business College. On April 26, 1942, the former Phyllis Currie was united in marriage with Carlton Engle in Harbor Beach, sharing more than 63-years of wonderful companionship and love. Mrs. Engle was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Caro. She devoted the early part of her married life to supporting and nurturing her family. After the children were raised, she worked as a salesperson for both Buckley Shoes and the J.C. Penney Company. Phyllis was well suited for both roles because of her quick wit and love of people. Phyllis is survived by her husband, Carlton; three children and their spouses, Richard Engle, of Fort Gratiot, Cheryl (Joel) Hord, of Boca Raton, Florida, and Marilyn (Traver) Wood, of Charlevoix; seven grandchildren, Sara VonBernthal, Jessica Cleland, Christy McGuckin, Paul Hord, Christy Hord, Adam Wood, and Elissa Wood; eight great-grandchildren; two siblings, Dorothy (Harold) Cregeur, of Caro, and Douglas (Eleanor) Currie, of Harbor Beach; sister-in-law, Beada Currie; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Jack Currie. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Caro on Sunday, January 29, 2006, with Pastor Cameron Steele officiating. Funeral arrangements were handled by the Collon Funeral Home in Caro. Gertrude K. Quinn Gertrude K. Quinn, 97, of Pinnebog, a long-time teacher and educator, died Saturday evening, January 14, 2006, at the Huron County Medical Care Facility. She was born December 20, 1908 at the home of her parents, the late Jacob and Christine (McIntosh) Krug in Sheridan Township. On December 26, 1942, she was united in marriage to Arthur Quinn at St. Columbkille Catholic Church in Sheridan Township. They farmed in Sheridan Township for a time before moving to the family farm in Chandler Township. They sold the farm in 1958 and moved into Pinnebog. Art preceded her in death on December 30, 1982. Mrs. Quinn received her teaching certificate from Huron County Normal and taught at several country schools in the area. After receiving a bachelor's degree in education from Eastern Michigan University, she began teaching at Elkton Elementary and then for the Laker school system, retiring in 1973. She was a faithful member of St. Felix Catholic Church in Pinnebog, Huron County Retired Teachers Association, Alpha Delta Kappa (an honor sorority for outstanding women in education) and various women's clubs. Gertrude enjoyed cooking and baking and had been very active in the Clothe-A-Child program during the holidays. Surviving are three children and their spouses, Thomas (Linda) Quinn, of New Concord, Ohio, William (Alice) Quinn, of Davison, and Mary Jane (Daniel) Rockman, of West Bloomfield; nine grandchildren, Michael (Amy) Quinn, Tami (Keith) Hatfield, Ryan (Nikki) Quinn, Stephanie (Andrew) Showich, Jason (Robin) Rockman, Jeremy (Sarah) Calhoun, Shannon (Bruce) Arias, David (Diane) Robson, Denise (Tom) Schneider, Tyler Quinn and Hayley Quinn; 13 great-grandchildren, Ashley, Britney, Corey, Kristen, Emma, Sarah, Sylvia, Etta, Ethan, Jacob, Mason, Madison and Cameron; her brother, John Krug, of Ubly; and two sisters, LoDeema Lemke, of Sault Ste. Marie, and Louella Meyers, of Pontiac. Preceding her in death were a sister, Katherine Hurt; and two brothers, Henry and Angus Krug. Thorp II, 18, passed away on Sunday, January 15, 2006, at Mount Clemens General Hospital. He was born on February 17, 1987 in Bad Axe. He enjoyed rock music and horror movies. Tuesday, January 17, 2006 Lois Marie Dekoski Mrs. Lois Marie Dekoski, 37, of Ubly, passed away Sunday, January 15, 2006, at the United Hospice Residence of Marlette. Lois was born on March 4, 1968 in Harbor Beach to Donald and Nancy (Koss) Terbrack. She married Keith Dekoski on November 14, 1987 at Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Ruth. She was a graduate of Ubly High School. She worked at McDonald Foodland for six years. She worked for Dr. Batzer for three years and Dr. Corsini for four years. She was a parishioner at St. Mary Catholic Church of Parisville for 18 years. She taught religious education at St. Mary's for 10 years. She liked to crotchet. Lois was a caring and loving person who loved spending time with her family and friends. Thelma "Sal" Kundinger Thelma "Sal" Kundinger, 96, of Clare and formerly of Sebewaing, died Saturday, January 14, 2006, at Tendercare of Clare following a one year illness. She was born November 1, 1909 in Bach, daughter of Charles G. and Emma (Kramer) Baur. She was united in marriage to Arthur C. Kundinger on May 8, 1926 in Detroit. He preceded her in death on November 11, 1978. "Sal" was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Sebewaing, was in their Bible study group, and enjoyed sewing. She had lived in Sebewaing for many years before moving to Tendercare of Clare four years ago. Surviving are one son, William Kundinger, of Bay City; daughter-in-law, Dorothy K. Kundinger, of Bloomfield Hills; seven grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; five great- great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Ruth Baur, of Sebewaing; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by one son, Thomas Kundinger; one daughter, Sally McCarthy; four sisters, Esther Gremel, Martha Schnepp, Elsie Deeg, and Edna Burdon; two brothers, Otto and Arthur Baur; two grandsons, Craig Snively and infant, John Kundinger; one great-grandson, John A. Lawhorn, 70, of Harbor Beach, passed away Monday, January 16, 2006, at her home in Harbor Beach. Born in Bad Axe on April 8, 1935, she was the daughter of the late Henry and Mable (Grills) Marks. On April 23, 1955, Shirley and Floyd Lawhorn were united in marriage in Bad Axe. Floyd preceded her in death on January 22, 1995. Shirley was a retired employee of the Human Development Corporation, Region 7. She retired in June of 2005, after working for 20 years. She also was a former employee of Hamil Manufacturing in Bad Axe. Surviving are her children, Sandra Carter and her husband, Randy, of Bay Port, Debora Blehm and her husband, David, of Filion, Brian Lawhorn and his wife, Ina, of Texas, Rose Soper and her husband, Samuel, of Harbor Beach, Doral Lawhorn and his wife, Tanya, of Bad Axe, Kevin Lawhorn, of Mississippi, Lisa Ford and her husband, Ross, of Marlette, Robin Soper and her husband, James, of Harbor Beach, Kimberly Lawhorn and her friend, Rick, of Filion, Penny Lawhorn, of Reese, Rick Lawhorn, of Bay City, Dawn Lahorn and her friend, Mike, of Harbor Beach; 25 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two sisters, Bea Davis, of Bad Axe, and Janet Winowiecki, of Royal Oak. Matelski, 86, of Kinde, passed away on Sunday, January 15, 2006, at Courtney Manor in Bad Axe. She was born on November 27, 1919 in Dwight Township, daughter of the late Erich and Bertha (Poppeck) Brade. She married Albin E. Matelski on August 23, 1941 in Detroit. He preceded her in death on October 29, 2003. She was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Kinde. Lydia is survived by one son, Edward (Kathy) Matelski II, of Wichita Falls, Texas; one sister, Hadie Young; one sister-in-law, Blanche Brade; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Otto, Harold, and Arthur Brade; two sisters, Margaret Schuman, and Ottelia "Tillie" Wessels; one sister-in-law, Wanda "Lee" Brade. Mina Van Dam Mina Van Dam, 93, of Russellville, Alabama and formerly of Harbor Beach, passed away on Sunday, January 15, 2006, at her home in Russellville, Alabama. Born in Grand Rapids on September 24, 1912, she was the daughter of the late John Harm and Nettie (De Pagter) Van Dam. Mina was a graduate of Eastern Michigan University in 1934 and received her masters of education from Wayne State University in 1948. She was a retired teacher and assistant principal of the Detroit Public School System. Surviving are nieces and nephews. Mina was preceded in death by three brothers, Harm Van Dam, Arnold Van Dam, and William Van Dam. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Thursday, January 19, 2006, at the Ramsey Funeral Home in Harbor Beach with the Rev. Paula Timm, pastor of United Methodist Church, officiating. Wednesday, January 18, 2006 Tessie E. Doyle Tessie E. Doyle, 86, of Bad Axe, passed away Tuesday, January 17, 2006, at the Huron County Medical Care Facility. She was born October 12, 1919 to the late James and Melinda (Perkins) Roberts. On April 23, 1945, she was united in marriage in Ohio to the late John T. Doyle. Mrs. Doyle was a resident of Verona Township since 1947. She graduated in Calhoon County, West Virginia, and was a civilian timekeeper for the Wright-Patterson military base in Ohio. She attended the Free Methodist Church in Bad Axe and was a former Eastern Star Member. She was employed with Hamill Manufacturing for 18 years and worked for the Bad Axe High School kitchen. She enjoyed Bible study, plants, sewing, and making her own clothes and quilts for the church. She is survived by five sons, Kenneth Doyle and his wife, Rose, of Ruth, Gerald Doyle, of Bad Axe, David Doyle and his wife, Sue, of Bangkok, Thailand, Glen Doyle, of Port Orchard, Washington, and Maurice Doyle, of Bad Axe; three brothers, Arlie Roberts, of Lander, Wyoming, Denver Roberts and his wife, Paula, of West Virginia, Bob Roberts and his wife, Faye, of Panama City, Florida; one sister, Pat Bennet, of Barberton, Ohio; 12 grandchildren, Kelly, Kenny, Robbie, Mary, Tami, Sheila, Johnny, Cory, Jamie, Shannon, Amber, and Jessica Doyle; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Ted, Orin, and Bill Roberts; and one sister, Evelyn. Eberlein Clayton A. Eberlein, 87, of Sebewaing, died Wednesday, January 18, 2006, at the Bay Medical Care Facility in Essexville following a brief illness. He was born October 10, 1918 in Sebewaing, son of the late August and Christina (Ellwanger) Eberlein. He was united in marriage to LeEtta Kaufmann on September 9, 1939 in Sebewaing. She preceded him in death on September 20, 2003. Clayt had been employed as a tool and die maker at Active Industries in Elkton and later was a self-employed business entrepreneur in the Sebewaing area for many years. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Sebewaing. Surviving are four sons, two daughters, and their spouses, Curtis Eberlein, of Clio, James (LaVonne) Eberlein, of Unionville, David (Wendy) Eberlein, and Lynn Jahr, all of Sebewaing, John Eberlein, of Midland, Judy (Joe) Leyva, of Mayville; 14 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; one sister and brother-in-law, Alice (Fred) Pommerenke, of Sebewaing; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one brother, Richard Eberlein. A memorial service will take place at 1 p.m. on Sunday, January 22, 2006, at the Dinkel-Juengel Funeral Home in Sebewaing. Boyer, 59, of Kinde, passed away on Monday, January 16, 2006, at Covenant Cooper Hospital in Saginaw. He was born on January 6, 1947 in Jackson, son of the late Walter and Bonnie (Adams) Boyer. He married Elaine Sommers on September 28, 1968 in Port Hope. He served in the U.S. Army. Russell is survived by his wife, Elaine, of Kinde; two sons, Russell I. Boyer and his fiancée, Laura Klebba, of Bad Axe, and LeRoy Boyer, of St. Louis; two daughters, Mary Elliott, of Bay City, and Jean Petersen, of Bad Axe; step-father, Andrew Pittman, of Bad Axe; one brother, Carl (Patricia) Boyer, of Arizona; two sisters, Donna (Ira) Pyrek of Kinde, and Helen (Gary) Eisinger, of Port Austin; one grandson, Chad Mosey, of Bad Axe; and five granddaughters, Alisha Boyer, of Bay City, Tiffany Elliott, of Bay City, Sheila Mosey, Holly Mosey, and Stacey Mosey, of Bad Axe. Jimkoski, 30, of Pinnebog, died Wednesday, January 18, 2006, at St. Mary's Medical Center in Saginaw. He was born on December 5, 1975 in Harbor Beach, son of John and Alberta Jimkoski. Nick and Carey Bugenski were married on June 6, 1998. Nick graduated from North Huron High School in 1995. He enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his two little boys. Nick loved farming and working for the family farm in Pinnebog. He was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church in Port Austin. Nick is survived by his wife, Carey; two sons, Nathan Nicholas and Carter Christian; his parents, John and Alberta Jimkoski, of Pinnebog; two brothers, Michael Jimkoski, of Pinnebog, and Matthew (Heather) Jimkoski, of Freeland; two sisters, Sheila Homrich (Don) Mackowiak, of Pinnebog, and Melanie (Daniel) Maurer, of Pinnebog; and maternal grandmother, Florine (Edward) Parkham, of Caseville. He is also survived by his in-laws, Kenneth and Marjorie Bugenski, of Port Austin, Pamela Bugenski and her special friend, James Bartek, of Florida, Melissa (Robert) Wingard, of Jackson, and Jodi (Dominik) Beckman, of Swartz Creek; and several nieces and nephews. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Saturday, January 21, 2006, at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Port Austin. Presiding will be the Rev. Robert Paré, pastor. Verneda Divo Verneda (Young) Divo, 83, of Pigeon, died Wednesday afternoon, January 18, 2006, at Bi-County Community Hospital in Warren. She was born June 25, 1922 at the home of her parents, the late Victor and Ida (Wenzel) Young, in Oliver Township. On November 3, 1945, she was united in marriage to John C. Divo in Kilmanagh. Shortly after their marriage, they moved to the Detroit area. While raising her family, she began working at Fisher Body in Detroit in the sewing department making vinyl rooftops, retiring in the mid '70s for health reasons. After retiring, they moved to Fraser. John preceded her in death on June 12, 1994, but she remained in Fraser until 2004, when she moved to Pigeon. Verneda always enjoyed sewing, whether it be making clothes for the kids and grandkids or new drapes and curtains. She also liked crocheting, and gardening, raising beautiful flowers and prize vegetables. She was a very active member of Bethany Baptist Church in Clinton Township. Surviving are three children, Jim (Beverly) Divo, of Sterling Heights, Jean Haley, of Warren, and Robert (Chris) Divo, of Deerpark, Texas; seven grandchildren; a brother, Kenneth (Ilene) Young, of Elkton; sister, Helen (Robert) Mero, of Medina; sister-in-law, Lena McGee; and her little dog, Savannah. Preceding her in death were her great-grandson, Jimmy; son-in-law, Gary Haley; and two brothers, Bill and Eldon Young. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. on Saturday, January 21, 2006, at the Champagne Funeral Chapel in Elkton. The Rev.
