Sunday, October 15, 2006 Mark Hughes Jr. Mr. Mark Hughes, Jr., 79, died Thursday evening, October 12, 2006, at Covenant Healthcare-Cooper after a short illness. He was born the son of the late Mark and Ethel Hughes on February 5, 1927 in Port Hope and had resided in this area the last 50 years. He graduated from Bad Axe High School, served with the U.S. Army during World War II in the European Theatre Operations, worked and retired from Dow Corning Corporation after 20 years of service, was a member of St. Agnes Catholic Church in Freeland, He enjoyed fishing, gardening, and playing cards with his friends. On May 3, 1947, he married the former Doris E. Fehner. She predeceased him on March 23, 2005. He is survived by six children, Carol (John) McInnis, and Diane (William) Greif, all of Saginaw, Dennis Hughes, of Freeland, Craig Hughes, of Bay City, Lori (Dave) Wildfong, of Traverse City, and Mary (Greg) Reetz, of Freeland; 12 grandchildren; five great- grandchildren. He also was predeceased by a son, Mark Hughes III, a granddaughter Heather Hughes, two brothers and three sisters. In accordance with Mark's and his family's wishes, cremation has already taken place at Country Roads Crematory, Hemlock. A memorial Mass will be conducted at a later date at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Freeland. Osborn, 82, of Sheridan Township, passed away Thursday, October 12, 2006, at the Huron Medical Center, Bad Axe. Mr. Osborn was born April 6, 1924 in Tuscola County near Caro. He is the son of the late Frank and Nellie (VanSickle) Osborn. Mr. Osborn never married. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Monday, October 16, 2006, at the MacAlpine Funeral Home in Bad Axe. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the time of the service on Monday at the funeral home. Cremation services will follow at Sunset Valley Crematory, Bay City. Monday, October 16, 2006 Brenda A. Bernat Brenda A. Bernat, 65, a four-year resident of Ubly, also a former resident of Port Austin for 10 years and formerly a resident of Warren for 30 years, died Friday, October 13, 2006, at Covenant Cooper Hospital in Saginaw. She was born February 20, 1941 in Hamtramck. Mrs. Bernat was the proud owner and operator of Backs by Brenda for 25 years. She was a registered nurse for 45 years and belonged to the Ubly Historical Society and Caseville Book Club. She is survived by her children, Robert Bernat, Susan (Harold) Turner, Karen (Ken) Kelley, and Teresa (Joseph) Orlando; a brother, John (Donna) Kramerich; and six grandchildren. A funeral service will be conducted at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, October 16, 2006, at David J. Wysocki Funeral Home, 29440 Ryan Road, Warren, with the Rev. Ron Kelley officiating. Geraldine "Gerry" E. Britt Mrs. Geraldine "Gerry" E. Britt, 80, of Cass City and formerly of Colfax Township, passed away Saturday, October 14, 2006, at her home. Gerry was born April 4, 1926 in Dayton Township, the daughter of the late Wendell and Elizabeth (Donnelly) Kelley. On March 6, 1943, she married Willard Britt in Bad Axe. Willard passed away May 28, 2005. She worked in sales for Murray's, Kritzman's and the Clothes Closet, all in Bad Axe for many years. She enjoyed playing bingo and spending time with her family and she was a very good mother. Gerry is survived by her sons, Richard (Patricia) Britt, of Cass City, and James Britt, of Ubly; grandchildren, Lisa Britt, Paul (Sechenia) Britt, Larissa Parkey and Gareth Britt; great grandchildren, Antonia, Aston, Jeremy and Lance; and siblings, Ken (Dee) Kelley, of Sandusky, Bill (Louise) Kelley, of Massachusetts, and Betty (the late Joe) Dombrowski, of Bad Axe. She was preceded in death by her son, Larry (Jacqueline) Britt, of Texas. Tuesday, October 17, 2006 Daniel "Dan" A. Franzel Mr. Daniel "Dan" A. Franzel, 92, of Ubly, passed away Monday morning, October 16, 2006, at the Bay Regional Center in Bay City. Dan was born on July 31, 1914 in Austin Township on the farm of his late parents, George and Irene (McMillin) Franzel. He was raised on the farm and now owns it. It is a Centennial Farm of the Franzel family. He married Mary Eileen Sommerville on April 2, 1948 in Bad Axe. Dan was a graduate of a country school and Ubly High School. He was a member of the Ubly Championship Football Team in 1931. He took courses at Michigan State University in Livestock and Farm Management. He attended Ag Days and other workshops. He farmed 3,000 acres, which are now rented. He owned and managed 1,500 acres plus other real estate holdings. Dan had worked at Bud Wheel in Detroit. He sold eggs and did livestock trucking in Detroit as Franzel Farms Trucking. Dan was a fertilizer salesman for Agrico Fertilizer for 20 years. He was a dealer for Funks Seed Corn for 20 years with up to 100 annual customers. Dan was a cash crop farmer, using his farm for test plots for 25 years. He also raised and milked registered Herford cattle. He was a member of the Michigan Milk Producers and sponsored livestock tours to Austria, Italy, France, the Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland, Hawaii, England, and within the United States. Dan was a World War II veteran of the South Pacific Theatre and was hospitalized for four months from related injuries. He was a heavy engineer training instructor at Fort Belvoir, Virginia, serving four and a half years in the U.S. Army. Dan and his family were present at the World War II Memorial Dedication in Washington, D.C. on May 29, 2004. Dan has worked with 4-H doing projects, advisory work and judging livestock. He was a former member of the Thumb Veterans Organization. He was a member of the Ubly Community Club. Dan was a member of the Bad Axe Lions Club for 25 years and had a lifetime membership to the Bad Axe Knights of Columbus Council #1546. He was on the building committee for the K. of C. Hall in Bad Axe. Dan was a committee member for 10 years for the Farmers Home Administration. He was a committeeman with the Huron County ASC Community for 10 years as well as the committee's chairman for 25 years. He was a committeeman for the Michigan Association of Farmers Elected ASC, and was Chairman of the state for 15 years. He was on the Holstein-Freisian committee of registered Holsteins for 25 years. Dan was a member of the Huron County Farm Bureau, the Michigan Livestock Association, and Michigan Milk Producers. He belonged to the Michigan Cattlemans' Association, to the Big Brother-Sister Organization and was on the Huron County Board of Directors for six years. He was Chairman of the committee to organize the Huron Soil Conservation District. He was on the Board of Directors for Bay Port State Bank from 1989-1992. Dan was a former parishioner of St. Ignatius Catholic Church in Freiburg and was currently a parishioner at St. John Catholic Church in Ubly and had been most of his life. He loved to assist young farmers, both financially and with his farming knowledge. He also provided assistance to small business persons. Dan enjoyed smoking his pipe, playing euchre and toddy. He enjoyed sports, especially football. Dan loved to travel, meet and talk to persons of all walks of life. He truly enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. Dan is survived by his wife of 58 years, Mary Eileen Franzel, of Ubly; one son, Harold Franzel and his wife, Carrye, of San Antonio, Texas; two daughters, Mary Catherine Nichol and her husband, John, of Mt. Pleasant, Sharon Franzel, of Atlanta, Georgia.; four grandsons, Michael and Wesley Franzel, Jonathan and Jason Nichol; special friend, Doris Western, of Bad Axe. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Josephine Franzel and an infant sister, Irene; one brother, Harold Franzel. A Funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. on Thursday, October 19, 2006, at St. John Catholic Church in Ubly with military honors. The Rev. Joseph Griffin, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in the St. Ignatius Cemetery in Freiburg. Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday and from 9 to 10 a.m. on Thursday at the Zinger- Smigielski Funeral Home in Ubly. There will be a parish vigil service at 7 p.m. on Wednesday and a rosary at 8 p.m. by the Bad Axe Knights of Columbus. Both services will be at the funeral home. Gillis, 61, died unexpectedly Saturday, October 14, 2006, at his home in Havertown, Pennvylvania. He suffered an apparent heart attack. Mr. Gillis was born February 5, 1945 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was the son of the late Dr. John A. and Eleanor M. (Ryan) Gillis. John and Miss Ruth Ann MacAlpine were united in marriage on July 21, 1973 at First United Methodist Church in Bad Axe. Mr. Gillis was a 1963 graduate of Devon Preparatory School, St. Joseph University 1967 and a graduate of The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. He served in the U.S. Army during Vietnam. He was a CPA/CFO with Commonwealth Real Estate Investment Corporation. Surviving are his wife, Ruth; one son, James A. Gillis; one daughter, Christina Gillis, both of Havertown; three sisters, Margaret E. Gillis, Eleanor M. Gillis, and Victoria A. Gillis M.D.; two brothers, Angus T. Gillis M.D. and James A. Gillis; two brothers-in-law, William A. MacAlpine and his wife, Marilyn, and Thomas N. MacAlpine; and several nieces and nephews. Wednesday, October 18, 2006 Curtis Harlan Dickinson Curtis Harlan Dickinson, 77, of Cass City, died Tuesday, October 17, 2006, at home following a lengthy illness. He was born October 10, 1929 in Cass City to Harold and Mable (Albrandt) Dickinson. Harlan graduated from Cass City High School in 1949 and served in the U.S. Army from 1951-1953 as a corporal. In 1955 he went to work for General Telephone Company as a cable splicer where he met a young "operator" named Marjorie East. Harlan married Marjorie on July 7, 1957 in Richmond, Michigan. Harlan worked for GTE until his retirement in 1991. He enjoyed cooking, golfing, deer hunting, fishing and spending time with his family. Harlan was an active member of Cass City United Methodist Church. Harlan is survived by his wife, Marjorie; children, Daniel (Janelle) Dickinson, of Cass City, Elizabeth Dickinson, of Holland, Jane (Del) Kostanko, of Woodland; grandchildren, Curtis, Macy, Samuel, Lauren and Lilia; sisters, Gladys Anthes, of Cass City, Dorothy Dickinson, of Norway, Judy Esckilsen, of Cass City; a brother, Rev. Richard Turner, of Saginaw. He was preceded in death by twin infant brothers, Ronald and Donald Dickinson; and a sister, Marion Ozorowicz. Glaza Beatrice M. Glaza, 76, passed away Monday, October 16, 2006, after a courageous and lengthy battle against heart disease and diabetes. She was born October 31, 1929 in Sherman Township, daughter of the late John and Cecelia (Booms) Terbrack. She married Norman A. Glaza on November 7, 1949 in SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Ruth. She was a member of St. Justin Catholic Church, Hazel Park, for almost 50 years and a member of the Rosary Altar Society. Beatrice was a kind, gentle and loving soul who was quite well known for her incredible homemade bread. She is survived by her loving husband, Norman A. Glaza; and six children, Norma (Gary) Novick, of Warren, James (Diane) Glaza, of Clawson, John (Colleen) Glaza, of Warren, Marie Glaza, of Warren, Robert (Becky) Glaza, of Madison Heights, and David (Cindy) Glaza, of Pontiac; one loving daughter-in-law, Kim Glaza; grandchildren, Jeff (Carrie) Novick, Jodie (Brian) McGuckin, Chris (Emily) Glaza, Candy (Michael) Albin, Scott (Lori) Glaza, Dawn Glaza, Gregory Glaza, Jesse Glaza, Justin Glaza, Lysa Glaza, and Stephen Glaza; and by four great-grandchildren, Darren and Janine McGuckin, Zachary Albin and Michael Glaza Sykes. She was born in Bay City on January 28, 1927 to the late Edward and Margaret (Jereau) Kleinke. She married Louis Redwantz on June 8, 1946 and he preceded her in death on January 1, 1974. She was a lifelong homemaker. Survivors include five children, David L. Redwantz, Judy (Gary) Wilson, Roy E. (Diane) Redwantz, Nancy (Allen) Richard, and Dr. Scott E. (Amy) Redwantz; 10 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; a brother, Edward (Laura) Kleinke Jr.; three sisters-in-law, Marie Stein, Sally (Don) Wolverton, and Donna (Richard) Eymer. Armbruster, 58, of Sebewaing, died Wednesday, October 18, 2006, at his home following a lengthy illness. He was born April 12, 1948 in Pigeon, son of the late Carl and Alice L. (Gettel) Armbruster. He was a 1966 graduate of Sebewaing High School. He was united in marriage to Loretta "Sam" Martin on August 1, 1970 in Flint. He farmed in the Sebewaing area for many years. He served on the Sebewaing Ambulance Department, Sebewaing Fire Department, and also had been the Assistant Chief of Police. He served as village president for two terms and was on the Sebewaing village council for over 10 years. Roger was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, was a life member of Sebewaing Sportsmen's Club, past president of the Sebewaing Jaycees and past president of the Sebewaing Lions Club. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and socializing. Surviving are his wife, Loretta "Sam" Armbruster, of Sebewaing; two sons, James Armbruster and his wife, Amanda, of Bay City, Michael Armbruster and his fiancé, Erica Kuhl, of Sebewaing; one grandson, Wyatt; one sister, Joyce Schwartz, of Unionville; several nieces and nephews; and grandpuppy, Jasper. He was preceded in death by one brother, Dale. The funeral service will take place at 11 a.m. on Saturday, October 21, 2006, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Sebewaing. The Rev. (Fessler) Morell Mrs. Pauline J. (Fessler) Morell, 81, of Ubly, passed away Tuesday, October 17, 2006, at Courtney Manor of Bad Axe. Pauline was born March 3, 1925, daughter of George and Ida (Imerson) Fessler. She married Arthur Morell on January 5, 1963 in Caro. They were married 43 years. Pauline worked at the Mooney Nursing Home in Caro. She performed volunteer work during the war. She also served as a gasoline clerk for the office of Price Administration. She belonged to the Caro Rebekak Lodge No. 249, where she served as noble grand for two years and as secretary for three years. She was also secretary and treasurer for the Ubly Senior Citizens. She loved to play bingo and euchre. Pauline is survived by her husband, Arthur, of Ubly; five children, Jane Noto and her husband, Gerry, of Lachine, Linda Zittel and her husband, Gerald, of Vassar, Diane Kingsland, of Cass City, Ted Robinson Jr. and his wife, Peggy, of Fairgrove, James Morell and his special friend, Michel Newbegin, of Ubly; three step-children, Roseann Emming and her husband, Joe, of Ruth, Janice Peyerk and her husband, Jim, of Cass City, Larry Morell and his wife, Cindy, of Ubly; 26 grandchildren, 54 great grandchildren; one great great granddaughter; cousin, Raymond Niles, of California; special friend, Sue Piotter, of Ubly. Satow, 93, of Brooksville, Florida and formerly of Sebewaing, died Tuesday, October 17, 2006, at Spring Hill Health Center in Brooksville, Florida following a lengthy illness. She was born June 10, 1913 in Detroit, daughter of the late Herman and Emma (Kain) Martens. Hannah had been employed for Dr. Henderson, Dr. Laidlaw and later for Dr. John Zuzga. She then owned and operated Hannah's Fashion Shop in Sebewaing for five years. She was a former member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Sebewaing. Surviving are her son, Jerild and Joyce (Hagen) Flint, of Hudson, Florida; two grandsons and their wives, Michael and Patti Flint, of Midland, and Steven and Ellen Flint, of Twinsburg, Ohio; one sister, Lenore Coelner, of Texas; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by one sister, Mae Martens, and two brothers, Myron and Elmer Martens. Cremation has taken place in Florida. Robinson, 69, of Bad Axe, owner and operator of Thumb Radio, Inc., went to be with the Lord on Monday, October 16, 2006, at St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria, Illinois. He was born September 22, 1937 in Huron County, son of the late James Otis and Beatrice (Shagena) Robinson. He married Mary Ann Kuntze on September 15, 1961 in the Bad Axe Presbyterian Church. He attended the Community Wesleyan Church in Elkton. Otis is survived by his wife, Mary Ann Robinson, of Bad Axe; three sons, James (Connie) Robinson, of Bad Axe, Thomas (Shannon) Robinson, of North Branch, and Allen (Rhonda) Robinson, of Pigeon; two daughters, Anne (Duane) Gebauer, of Gregory, and Nancy (Kurt) Iwankovitsch, of Peoria, Illinois; two brothers, Orin (Goldie) Robinson, of Bad Axe, and Gary (Joy) Robinson, of Harrison; two sisters, Linda Robinson, of Boston, Massashusetts, and Leah (LeRoy) Trisch, of Caro; and 13 grandchildren. Friday, October 20, 2006 Sylvester "Elmer" Ertman Mr. Sylvester "Elmer" Ertman, 80, of Tyre, passed away Thursday, October 19, 2006, at his residence under hospice care. Sylvester was born December 31, 1925 in Parisville to the late Walter and Bertha (Peplinski) Ertman. He married Bernice Seltz on November 13, 1948 at St. Hyacinth Catholic Church in Detroit. She preceded him in death on December 1, 2003. Sylvester was a foreman at the GM Hydramatics Plant in Ypsilanti. He was a member of the VFW. He was a parishioner at St. John Catholic Church in Ubly for 27 years. Sylvester was a World War II army veteran, serving in the European Theatre in Germany from 1946-1949. He enjoyed fishing, small engine repair, playing pool and euchre. Sylvester is survived by three sons, Lance Ertman and wife, Brenda, of Livonia, Dean Ertman, of Detroit, and Dewey Ertman, of Westland; one daughter, Sherri Sadro and husband, Melvin, of Argyle; 10 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one son, Gary Ertman, on March 17, 2004; and one infant daughter, Debra Ertman. Morley, 93, of Elkton, died Wednesday evening, October 18, 2006, at Sunny Acres Nursing Center, Bad Axe. She was born January 23, 1913 in Colfax Township at the home of her parents, the late George and Grace (Howie) Robarts. On November 5, 1932, she was united in marriage to Wesley W. Morley in Elkton. They farmed in Oliver Township until moving to Elkton in the early fifties. While he worked at Active, she operated an adult foster care home at their residence. Wesley preceded her in death on March 28, 1979. Lola was a life member of the Order of Eastern Star. She enjoyed quilting, collecting owls and thimbles. She also enjoyed canning from her garden and caring for her flowers. Surviving are three sons, Arnold (Mary) Morley, of Elkton, Walter (Tessie) Morley, of Abilene, Texas, and Lee (Charlotte) Morley, of Elkton; nine grandchildren, Tina, Tammy, Sandy, Deanna, Jim, Lola, Joann, Devin and Bob; and 20 great grandchildren. Preceding her in death were an infant son, Wayne; two grandchildren, Tonya and Jim Morley; a great granddaughter, Jessica Wolschlager; three brothers, Myron, Jim and George Robarts and three sisters, Susie Wells, Eva Thomas and Myrtle Mayworm. A funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. on Saturday, October 21, 2006, at the Champagne Funeral Chapel, Elkton. The Rev. Daniel Stone, pastor of the Community Wesleyan Church, Elkton, will officiate with burial in Colfax Township Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. today and after 11 a.m. on Saturday at the funeral home. Memorials may be given to the family. Words of condolence may be left at cfcElkton.com. 1
