Swackhamer, 87, passed away Wednesday, July 6, 2006, at National Health Care in Garden City, South Carolina. He was born July 7, 1918 in Detroit, the son of the late Floyd and Bertha (Williams) Swackhamer. He moved to Bad Axe in 1928 after his father passed away. He was united in marriage to the former Joann Schmidt of Port Austin in 1946. Ed served 32 years as Huron County Clerk until his retirement. He was a Sergeant in the U.S. Air Force in World War II and was a waist gunner on a B17 bomber. On his eighth mission flying over Germany, his aircraft was shot down and he became a prisoner of war for two years in Krims, Austria. He was a life member of Huron Verona Lodge F and AM No. 365 and a past member of Verona Hills Golf and Country Club. He is survived by a son, Edward Harry (Sue) Swackhamer, of Holman, Wisconsin; a brother, Robert (Florence) Swackhamer, of Bad Axe; four granddaughters, Ashley Collier, Ansley Hill, Sarah Adkins, and Rachel Friedrickson, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Joann (Schmidt) Swackhamer; a daughter, Mary Jo Collier; and brothers, Warren and Raymond. Funeral services were private. Monday, July 17, 2006 Thelma Gorang Thelma Gorang, 81, of Bad Axe, passed away Sunday, July 16, 2006, at Cooper Covenant in Saginaw. She was born October 13, 1924 in Bad Axe to the late William and Florence (Dunlap) McDonald. She was united in marriage to Henry Gorang on May 4, 1946 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Bad Axe. Mrs. Gorang was a lifelong resident of Bad Axe and a church member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. She owned and operated Thelma's Beauty Shop for 50 years. She enjoyed bowling, playing cards, and visiting with family and friends. She is survived by two sons, William Henry (Belma) Gorang, of Plainwell, and Larry David (Diana) Gorang, of Kalamazoo; one daughter, Maureen (Dennis) Duggan, of Port Austin; two brothers-in-law, Ernest Detgen, of Bad Axe, and John (Betty) Gorang, of Rochester; one sister-in-law, Myrtle Gorang, of Saline; eight grandchildren, Anita (Dan) Majkowski, of Royal Oak, Aaron (Jamie) Gorang, of Marion, Denny Duggan, of Sebewaing, Kristie Duggan and Tanya Duggan, of Port Austin, Amber Gorang and Dominick Gorang, of Bad Axe, and Felicia Gorang, of Kalamazoo; and four great-grandchildren. Haist, 75, of Sebewaing, died Sunday, July 16, 2006, at Bay Regional Medical Center in Bay City following a two-month illness. He was born March 10, 1931 in Sebewaing, son of the late Elmer and Almeda (Stahl) Haist. He was united in marriage to Darlene M. Holland on October 7, 1954 in Indiana. Gerald was employed at Active Industries in Sebewaing for 25 years before retiring in January 1995. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Sebewaing and had served on the Sebewaing Village Council for several years. He enjoyed sports and loved to work in his yard. Surviving are his wife, Darlene, of Sebewaing; one son, Todd J. Haist, of Sebewaing; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one brother, James Haist. The funeral service will take place at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, July 19, 2006, at the Dinkel- Juengel Funeral Home in Sebewaing. The Rev. Leatrice Lackie Leatrice Lackie, 77, of Kinde, died Friday, July 14, 2006, at Select Specialty Hospital in Mount Clemens. She was born in Detroit on April 10, 1929 to the late Benjamin McLauglin and Mary Dave. Mrs. Lackie was a resident of Kinde. She enjoyed knitting, crafting, flowers and birds. She especially enjoyed working with children and was a foster grandparent at Kinde Elementary School. Memorials may be made to the Family Discretionary Fund. Norman S. Maurer Norman S. Maurer, 88, of Ubly, passed away Saturday, July 15, 2006, at his residence under hospice care. Norman was born February 14, 1918 in Verona Township to the late Peter and Mary (Murray) Maurer. He married Lorraine Murray on May 28, 1949 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Argyle. She preceded him in death on January 15, 1980. He married Mary Lou Murdock on October 25, 1986 at Most Holy Trinity Church of Smith Corners. He attended the Martin Country School and was a graduate of Bad Axe High School. He was a veteran of WWII. He was a member of T.V.O. NO. 1 where he was a past commander. He farmed in Verona and Bingham Townships. He worked for Maurer Slaughter House for ten years. He was a lifelong member of Most Holy Trinity Church where he sat on the parish council; he was a member of the Holy Name Society and the Cemetery Board. He was a 4-H leader. He enjoyed golf, traveling, watching and feeding birds. There will be a parish vigil service at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. James Allen Thompson James Allen Thompson, 71, of California, born July 18, 1935, died July 7, 2006. He was the eldest son of Lester and Barbara Thompson (both deceased) of Bad Axe. He is survived by his wife, Mary; children, Amy, Andrew and Aaron; son-in-law, Charlie; daughters-in-law, Alicia and Tracy; grandchildren, Emily, Katherine, Margaret, Cameron, and Samuel; sister, Jeanette; and brothers, Robert, Earl, Gary, Donald and Eric; sisters-in-law, Phyllis, Kathy, Dianne, Susann and Maggy; and many nieces and nephews. Tuesday, July 18, 2006 Allie Rene Carter-Antoszewski Allie Rene Carter-Antoszewski, infant, of Port Huron, passed away Thursday, July 13, 2006. She was born Wednesday, July 12, 2006. Allie is survived by her mother, Brandy L. Carter, of Port Huron; father, Daniel J. Antoszewski, of Port Huron; grandparents, Tami and Earl Sass, of Port Huron, and the late Mary Antoszewski; grandfather, Henry; great-grandmother, Eleanor Antoszewski; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins. Joan H. Donnellon Joan H. Donnellon, 94, of Minden City, passed away Monday, July 17, 2006, at the Huron Medical Center Facility in Bad Axe. Joan was born June 12, 1912 in Kinkora, Canada to the late James and Elizabeth (Walsh) Gallagher. She married Fred Donnellon on January 22, 1941 in Dearborn. He preceded her in death on January 25, 1998. She graduated from high school in Canada. She received her degree as a registered nurse from Providence Hospital in 1931, working in nursing care in Detroit and Miami. She and her family farmed in Minden City. Joan then worked as a charge nurse at Huron Medical Facility for ten years. She was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Palms since 1941 where she served as an Eucharistic Minister visiting shut-ins for many years. She also was a member of the Altar Society and was an avid reader. Joan is survived by two daughters, Catherine Puvalowski, of Davison, and Mary Lou Stewart and her husband, John, of Metamora; three sons, James Donnellon and his wife, Noreen, of Minden City, Richard Donnellon and his wife, Bonnie, of Orland Park, Illinois, and Patrick Donnellon and his wife, Cathy, of Farmington; 18 grandchildren; one sister, Dorothy Molloy, of Shelby Township. She was preceded in death by one grandson, Richard Hall; four brothers, John, Tim, Leo and Maurice Gallagher; two sisters, Mary Conrad and Bonnie Hega. Ethel Carol Schoech Ethel Carol Schoech, 91, of Linden and formerly of Westland and Harbor Beach, died Monday, July 17, 2006, at Crestmont Healthcare Center. Ethel was born October 14, 1914 in Eger, Hungary, the daughter of Joseph and Mary (Szeredi) Voss. She was married to Theodore Schoech; he preceded her in death. Surviving are children, Ethel and her husband, Dave Moeller, of Linden, Douglas and his wife, Joyce Schoech, of Garden City, Marilyn Donner, of Washington; grandchildren, Kelly, Kimberly, Kristen, Douglas Jr., and Deborah; great-grandchildren, Keegan, Delaney, Anna and Robert; sisters, Frances Palo, of Roseville, Eleanor Ingersoll, of Fowlerville; brother, John and his wife, Bonnie Voss, of Fairgrove. Ann Marie Schuette Ann Marie Schuette, 92, of Pigeon, died Monday morning, July 17, 2006, at Scheurer Hospital, Pigeon. She was born February 22, 1914 at the home of her parents, the late Peter and Elizabeth (Simon) Kumaus in Oliver Township. On August 26, 1933, she was united in marriage to Herman F. Schuette at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Linkville. They lived and farmed in Oliver Township all their married life. Herman preceded her in death on June 1, 1969. Ann enjoyed quilting and crocheting, embroidering and needlework. She also enjoyed gardening and crossword puzzles. She was a longtime member of Cross Lutheran Church, Pigeon. Surviving are four children, Shirley (Jim) Dutcher, of Clinton Township, Janet (Ray) Konen, of Grand Rapids, Carol (Jim) Bridges, of Midland and Robert (Joan) Schuette, of Bay City; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and three sisters-in-law, Verna Hedlund, of Sebewaing, Marion Kumaus, of Pigeon, and Marge Kumaus. Gucwa, 67, of Bad Axe, passed away Sunday, July 16, 2006, at his residence under hospice care. Thomas was born April 22, 1939 in Bad Axe to the late Theodore and Adelaide (Bureiza) Gucwa. He never married. He attended the McIntyre School and graduated from Bad Axe High School. He worked at Active Industries, now Tower, for 19 years. He then farmed until June of this year. He was a lifelong member of St. Columbkille Catholic Church in Sheridan Corners. He enjoyed visiting with family and friends. Andy, Thomas' dog, was a long time companion. Thomas is survived by one sister, Mary Haley and her husband, Richard, of Bad Axe; one brother, David Gucwa and his wife, Barbara, of Schaumburg, Illinois; one niece, Christine Gucwa, of Chicago; one nephew, Thomas White, of Schaumburg, Illinois. Annabel Wolfe Zurbrick Annabel Wolfe Zurbrick, 89, lifelong resident of Pinnebog, passed away at her home on Monday, July 17, 2006. Annabel was born April 27, 1917 in Meade Township to the late William and Bertha (Gilbert) Maynard. She was united in marriage to Clarence Wolfe on April 17, 1937. He preceded her in death on August 31, 1977. On February 7, 1981, she married Earl Zurbrick who passed away October 7, 2004. Annabel graduated from the former Pinnebog High School. She was a member of the Pinnebog United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School and was active in the Child Study Club. She also was a member of the Tip of the Thumb Dance Club. She retired from the Huron County Medical Care Facility, where she was employed as a nurse's aide for many years. She enjoyed visiting with family and friends and league bowling. Mrs. Zurbrick is survived by two sons, David (Marcia) Wolfe, of Elkton, and James (Gail) Wolfe, of Caseville; two daughters, Carole Hobkirk, of Bad Axe, and Debra (Ron) Ruth, of Elkton; 13 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Robert Hobkirk and a granddaughter, Heather Hobkirk Burkhard; two brothers, Charles and Irvin Maynard; and a sister, Edith Howard. Memorials may be offered to the Pinnebog United Methodist Church. Thursday, July 20, 2006 Inez (Kreh) Vought Inez Vought, 89, passed away Tuesday, July 18, 2006, at Encore Way in Naples, Florida. She was born September 16, 1916 near Pigeon, the daughter of Ezra and Tillie (Wing) Kreh. She graduated from Elkton High School, class of 1935. After graduation Inez moved to Flint and worked at AC (a division of General Motors). She married Arthur Dion in 1937. When Art returned from World War II, the couple moved to Alpena and opened Dion Hardware Store which they operated until Art's death in 1964. Inez married Alger Vought in 1965. They later retired to Naples, Florida. Inez enjoyed dog races, bingo and traveling. An avid sportswoman, she enjoyed fishing and deer hunting at her 360-acre hunting camp near Hubbard Lake until she was into her 80s. Surviving are one sister, Beatrice Nichols, of Clio, and one brother, Harold Kreh, of Portage; two step- daughters, Billie Ann (William) Fox, of Tawas City and Betty (Wilbur) Wilke, of Alpena; four step-grandchildren; many step-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death were three sisters, Iva, Edna and Verna; and four brothers, Ervin, Oscar, Walter and Robert. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. on Saturday, July 22, 2006, at the Wachterhauser Funeral Home, 504 West Washington Avenue, Alpena, with burial in Holy Cross Cemetery, Alpena. Visitation is from 2 to 8 p.m. on Friday and from 11 a.m. until the time of service on Saturday. Clara E. Faupel Wightman Clara E. Faupel Wightman, 88, of Pigeon, passed away Tuesday, July 18, 2006, at Scheurer Hospital in Pigeon following a short illness. She was born at Gotts Corner on October 30, 1917, the daughter of Russell and Nellie (McIllmurry) Gotts. She attended the Rock City Country School near Gotts Corner and graduated in 1935 from Elkton High School. She was married on February 1, 1942 to David H. Faupel at Gotts Corner. He preceded her in death on November 30, 1967 after 25 happy years of marriage. On July 27, 1985, she married Newell S. Wightman in Elkton and they had nearly 20 wonderful years together until his death on May 7, 2005. Clara worked for many years at Huron Abstract in Bad Axe and later worked for two years at the Asbury Theological Seminary library. She worked on the farm with her husband and was a homemaker throughout her lifetime. She enjoyed playing board games, working crossword puzzles, and also loved to read. She dearly loved her family and her grandchildren. She was a faithful member of the Elkton Missionary Church and a devoted Christian. Her faith in Christ and her love for her family characterized her life and she will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. Her survivors include three sons, David William (Bonnie) Faupel, of Naples, Florida, Charles (Martha) Faupel, of Auburn, Alabama, and Donald (Barbara) Faupel, of Bad Axe; a step-daughter, Ann (Carl) Everett, of Clarkston; five grandchildren, Jennifer (Chad) Ewing, of Charlotte, North Carolina, Alison (Joey) Faupel, of Decatur, Georgia, Christina (Dan) Faupel, of Mexico City, Mexico, and David Faupel and Kevin Faupel, both of Bad Axe; three step-grandchildren, Michel (Kimberly) Elliot, of Lexington, Kentucky, Chris (Kari) Everett, of Oxford, and Julie (Steve) Nimer, of Walled Lake; a great-grandson, Tristan Ewing; five step-great-grandchildren, Keegan, Cassidy and Caleb Everett and Annie and Devon Nimer; several nieces and nephews; and her brother, William (Donna) Gotts, of Caseville. He was born January 8, 1939 in Bad Axe and moved to Vero Beach 15 years ago, coming from Ubly. He is survived by a sister, Patricia A. (Jack) Kehoe, of Gladwin; four brothers, Robert M. McIntyre, of Ubly, John D. McIntyre, of Bethel, Alabama, Gregory N. (Karen) McIntyre, of Bethel, Alabama, and Clare A. McIntyre, of Ubly. Betty McWilliams Betty Constance McWilliams, 86, of Branson, Missouri and formerly of Grant Township, died Tuesday, July 18, 2006, at St. Joseph's Hospital in St. Charles, Missouri. She was born in Bicknell, Indiana to the late Fred and Gertrude (Terry) Puckett. Betty and Archie were married on April 1, 1938. Archie preceded her in death on February 18, 1993. She enjoyed music, crossword puzzles, and visiting with family and friends. She was a member of the Church of God and attended the Faith Gospel Tabernacle. Betty was known as a practical joker by her family and friends. Betty is survived by three daughters, Carol (Rev. Cletus) Snellenberger, of Branson, Missouri, Janice (Rev. Charles) Clark, of Union City, Tennessee, and Judy (Rev. James R.) Jerry Puckett, of Cleveland, Tennessee; 18 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Gleason, Billy Bob, and Freddie Puckett. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Monday, July 24, 2006, at the Faith Gospel Tabernacle Church on Rescue Road. The Rev. James Willett and the Rev. Cletus Snellenberger will officiate. Burial will take place at the McTaggart Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. on Sunday and from 10 a.m. to the time of the service on Monday at the church. MacAlpine Funeral Home of Bad Axe is handling arrangements. Memorials may be offered to the family discretionary fund. 1
