Sunday, April 23, 2006 Evelyn Patricia Brown Evelyn Patricia Brown, 79, of Harbor Beach, passed away Saturday, April 22, 2006, in the Harbor Beach Community Hospital. Born in Detroit on December 29, 1926, she was the daughter of the late John and Evelyn (Maurer) Bushaw. On November 27, 1947, she was united in marriage to Royden Brown in Detroit. Roy preceded her in death on January 24, 2000 after 52 years of marriage. Pat was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Port Hope and enjoyed visiting family and friends. She is survived by her sons, Jim R. Brown, of Detroit, and David Brown, of Texas; a brother, John Bushaw, of Westland, and a sister, Dorothy Towers, of Westland; two grandchildren, Jaimi (Cristo) Kiardoulos II, Brian Brown; three great-grandchildren, Vincent, Chisei, and Cristo III; also surviving is a special friend, Walter Bender, of Harbor Beach. Pat was preceded in death by one son, John Brown, in 2001. The funeral service will be at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, April 25, 2006, in St. John Lutheran Church, Harbor Beach, with Rev. Lamont Madeline (Madge) D. Lamont, 89, of Deckerville, died Thursday, April 20, 2006, in Port Huron Hospital. She was born November 23, 1916 in Lemington, Ontario, the daughter of the late Henry and Flossie (Vokes) Smith. She married Keith Lamont 70 years ago on June 8, 1935 in Snover. She was member of the McGregor RLDS Church. She was retired from Clements Manufacturing. She loved to cook and bake for her family. She is survived by her husband, Keith, of Deckerville, two daughters and sons-in-law, Rosie and William Brabant, of Pennsylvania., Barbara and Fred Leibinger, of Deckerville; 11 grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Betty Falls, of Port Sanilac; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by one daughter and son-in-law, Ilean and Darwin Gracey; one infant son, Bobbie; one grandson, Ron Gracey; and six brothers, William, Stan, Marvin, Fred, Frank and Loren Smith. Ward William B. Ward, 72, of Harbor Beach, passed away on Friday, April 21, 2006, in St. John Hospital, Detroit, following a short illness. Born in Detroit on December 5, 1933, he was the son of the late Ruben and Mary (Bishop) Ward. On August 14, 1969, Bill and Donna Feltner Early were united in marriage in Roseville. Bill was a graduate of the University of Detroit and the Detroit School of Law. He was a District Court Judge for 36 years, serving in Fraser and Roseville and assisted in Marine City and Port Huron courts. Judge Ward also handled mental health hearings in Caro for many counties. Bill was an active member of Zion Lutheran Church in Harbor Beach and was the former President of the Congregation and was currently its vice president, a former Elder, and is serving on the Board of Directors of the Michigan District of the Lutheran Church, Missouri Synod. He was a member of the Michigan Bar Association, and a member of the Harbor Beach Community Hospital Board of Incorporators. He is survived by his wife, Donna Ward, of Harbor Beach; and a son, Thomas Paul Early Ward, of Macomb Township; and a daughter, Wanda Jean Knight, of St. Louis, Missouri; four grandchildren, Thomas, Joshua, Zachary and Kaitlyn Johnson. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Monday, April 24, 2006, in the Ramsey Funeral Home, Harbor Beach, with Rev. Leo Thoms officiating. Burial will be in the Rock Falls Cemetery. Monday, April 24, 2006 Gordon L. Gempel Gordon L. Gempel, 77, of Harbor Beach, passed away Saturday, April 22, 2006, in Covenant Health Center, Saginaw. Born in Harbor Beach on December 11, 1928, he was the son of the late Leo C. and Ruth Irene (Hamlin) Gempel. On May 20, 1950, Gordon and Betty Murawske were united in marriage in Harbor Beach. Gordon graduated from Harbor Beach Community Schools in 1946 and attended the University of Michigan and played on its football team. In 1949, he began the Gordon Gempel Insurance Agency in Harbor Beach which was started by his grandfather in 1931. Candice Oeschger became a partner in the agency in 1998. He was a real estate broker, a member of the National Republican Party and former chairman of the Huron County Republican Party. He was a member of the Harbor Beach Planning Commission, Harbor Beach Conservation Club, Harbor Beach Community Hospital Board of Incorporators, and Michigan Association of Independent Insurance Agents. Gordon was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Harbor Beach and served as an elder. Gordon was a former member of the Harbor Beach Jaycees, Rotary Club, the Special Police, and Touchdown Club. Gordon enjoyed bowling and was a member of the American Bowling Association. He also enjoyed playing tennis and attending Harbor Beach Pirate Football games as well as the Detroit Lions and Detroit Tigers games. He participated in the Minstrel Shows and enjoyed singing in the Men's Glee Club. Gordon is survived by Betty, his wife of 55 years; his daughters, Wendy Shugert and her husband, the Rev. Dr. Stephen Shugert, of Mount Pleasant, Cheryl Lear and her husband, Gary, of Westerville, Ohio, and Marsha Gempel, of Mount Pleasant; grandchildren, Russell Eidenberger and his wife, Andrea, Amy, Teri, and Nikki Lear, Jennifer Battersby and her husband, Elton, Jeff Schmidt; great-grandchildren, Katelyn, Drew Anne and Thomas Eidenberger and Isabelle Battersby. He was preceded in death by his father, Leo C. Gempel, in 1951; his mother, Ruth Irene Gempel, on July 26, 1998; his sister, Esther Munce, on April 13, 1998; great-granddaughter, Taylor Anne Eidenberger, on January 22, 1999. Memorials may be given to the Multiple Sclerosis Society and Diabetes Association. Frank V. Schramski Frank V. Schramski, 91, of Port Austin, died Saturday, April 22, 2006, after a short illness. He was born December 24, 1914 in Kinde, son of the late Joseph and Mary (Polega) Schramski. Frank and Theresa Vigenski were married on October 23, 1937 in St. Mary's Catholic Church, Dwight. She preceded him in death on July 4, 1973. Mr. Schramski was a lifelong resident of the Port Austin-Kinde area where he was a crop and dairy farmer and loved horses. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Dwight, which he helped build. He also helped build the foundation for the Port Austin Air Base, cleared trees for Thumb Electric, worked for Matelski's Builders and was employed at Active Industries, now Tower Automotive. He enjoyed working in the yard, playing cards and visiting with his family and friends. He is survived by six daughters, Margie (David) Craig, of Kinde, Eileen (David) Navock, of Kinde, Virginia (Larry) Moore, of Reese, Deloris (Edward R.) Kubacki, of Port Austin, Sharon (Larry) Ignash, of Kinde, Karen Goretski and her fiancé, Gary Newman, of Port Austin; 22 grandchildren; 44 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Joe (Ruth) Schramski, of Centerline, and John (Helen) Schramski, of Kinde; three sisters, Regina Lasceski, of Filion, Martha Semrau, of Roseville, and Genevieve (Eugene) Peruski, of Minden City; and many nieces and nephews; brother-in-law, Archie (Betty) Vigenski. Mrs. Gottschalk was born to the late John and Pauline (Wheeler) Bard on January 4, 1923 in Holly. She was united in marriage to Lawrence Gottschalk on January 28, 1945. He preceded her in death on April 13, 1991 after 46 years of marriage. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Bad Axe. Mrs. Gottschalk was employed with AAA Insurance and at the ASCS farm office in Bad Axe. Huston, 83, of Clinton Township, died on Monday, April 24, 2006. She was born on March 12, 1923 in Bad Axe to Wallace and Kathrine (Graham) Markle. She married Jack Alexander Huston on April 20, 1944. Pauline was an administrative assistant at Cottage Hospital for many years, retiring in 1988. She was a member of the Red Hat Society. She is survived by her daughter, Paula (Dan) Docherty, of Sacramento, California; son, Lee (Marianne) Huston, of Lapeer; grandchildren, Bryce W.A. Docherty, Jaclyn Huston, and Krystal Huston; sister-in-law, Adelaide Markle, of St. Johns. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack A. Kessel, 78, of Port Hope, passed away Monday evening, April 24, 2006, in Covenant Medical Center, Saginaw. Born in Huron Township near Port Hope on July 14, 1927, she was the daughter of the late Otto and Clara (Carpenter) Koglin. On June 9, 1951, Leona was united in marriage to Arthur Kessel. Arthur preceded her in death on April 4, 1987. Leona was a member of the St. John Lutheran Church in Port Hope and enjoyed gardening, crocheting, and working with her chickens and egg hatching. Sommerville, 84, of Port Huron, died Saturday, April 22, 2006. He was born February 8, 1922 in Tyre to the late James and Ethel Sommerville. He married Winifred M. Hyslop on June 29, 1946 in Sandusky. Mr. Sommerville retired from the Grand Trunk Western Railroad in 1987 after 37 years of service. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a member of American Legion Charles Hammond Post No. 8. He also was a member of the Moose Lodge and loved playing cards, going to the casino and playing bingo. Thursday, April 27, 2006 Iris R. Geilhart Iris R. Geilhart, 73, of Caseville, died Tuesday morning, April 25, 2006, at Covenant Cooper, Saginaw. She was born August 8, 1932 in Belleville to the late Lado and Thelma (VanDuzen) Bitnar. On September 22, 1951, she was united in marriage to Jimmie Geilhart in Romeo. They moved to Lake Township in 1973, when her husband, a Lieutenant with the Department of Natural Resources, was transferred to the area. He preceded her in death on January 22, 1989. Iris was a fun-loving person who enjoyed camping, flower gardening, bicycling, bird watching and most of all her cats. She attended Victory in Christ Community Church near Bad Axe; was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Auxiliary, Caseville Retirement Club, Audubon Society and the Pigeon Library Club. Surviving are four children, Coke Geilhart and his girlfriend, Janice, of Pigeon, Kin Geilhart, of Arvada, Colorado, Ric Geilhart and his wife, Carrie, of Caseville, and Tami Kivel, of Owendale; 11 grandchildren, Troy, Tory, Shilo, Shandon, David, Barry, Jessi, Sheana, Chaslyn, Michelle, and K J; five great- grandchildren, Jayci, Kaden, Kyler, Alicia and Rainy; two sisters, Lorna (Don) Bracken, of Belleville, and Lois (Dean) Smith, of Gladwin. Joyce Elizabeth Niswander Joyce Elizabeth (Fisher) Niswander, 59, of Ruth and formerly of Boyne City, died Monday, April 24, 2006, as the result of a boating accident. Joyce was born August 3, 1946 in Pellston, the daughter of Wendell and Anna (Griswald) Willis. She grew up in Boyne City and graduated from Boyne City High School. On June 20, 2000, Joyce married Scott Niswander in St. Louis. Joyce enjoyed several different types of crafts. She spent time working outdoors, fishing and working at her daughter's store. Joyce loved spending time with her family and friends. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her. She is survived by her husband, Scott Niswander, of Ruth; daughter, Stacie (Jay) Vogel, of Bad Axe; four grandchildren, Caleb, Savanna, Alexia and Andrew; mother, Anna Willis; brothers and sister, Dick (Pat) Griswald, of Boyne City, Carol Willis, of Boyne City, Ronald (Cindy) Willis, of Boyne City, and John Willis, of Anchorage, Alaska; and several nieces and nephews. Jo Ann Swiastyn Jo Ann Swiastyn, 66, of Grant Township near Elkton, died peacefully on Wednesday morning, April 26, 2006, at home with her family at her side. She was born May 14, 1939 at the home of her parents, Iva (Kipfer) McAlpine and the late George McAlpine in Greenleaf Township, Sanilac County. On May 28, 1961, she was united in marriage to David Swiastyn at the Elkton Methodist Church. They moved to the Pontiac area shortly after they married and raised their family there. She worked in the automotive industry at several small shops until retiring in 1994. That same year they moved to their home in Grant Township. Jo Ann attended the Community Wesleyan Church, Elkton. She enjoyed working in her yard and gardens, growing flowers and vegetables, then canning those vegetables for winter use. She was a fun-loving person, who liked country music and being with her children and grandchildren. Schroeder, 83, of Harbor Beach, passed away on Wednesday evening, April 26, 2006, in the long term care unit of the Harbor Beach Community Hospital. Born in Harbor Beach on November 15, 1922, she was the daughter of the late William and Maggie (McClellan) Brandow. On February 8, 1947, Betty and Leland Schroeder were united in marriage in Harbor Beach. Together they owned and operated Lee's Foodliner from 1952 until 1956 and then owned the Harbor Beach IGA store from 1956 until 1974. Lee preceded her in death on October 22, 1992. Betty was a member of Our Lady of Lake Huron Catholic Church in Harbor Beach and a long time member and former officer of the American Legion Auxiliary Post No. 197 of Harbor Beach. She also participated in the grandparents program at the Harbor Beach Elementary School for many years. Betty is survived by several nieces and nephews and a sister-in-law, Pat Brandow, of Port Huron, Ruth Schott, of Harbor Beach, and Doris (Bill) Bader, of Norwalk, Ohio. She was preceded in death by four brothers, Walter, Earl, William, and Melvin Brandow, and by two sisters, Lucille Schroeder and Luella Brandow. Rita Delores Zimba Rita Delores Zimba, 75, of Deford, died Thursday, April 27, 2006, in her home with her family by her side. She was born on June 3, 1930 in Dearborn Township to Coy and Dorothy (Noeske) Mathis. She married William E. Zimba on September 9, 1950 in Our Lady of Grace Mission Church in Dearborn Township. He died March 4, 2004. Rita and Bill moved to their farm in Deford on September 9, 1950. Rita was a lifetime member of St. Michael Catholic Church. She played guitar for the guitar mass for many years. Rita enjoyed playing bingo. She worked hard with her husband on the farm and was very devoted to her family. Rita is survived by her children, Bernadette (James) Walters, of Bay City, Rita (Eugene) Kaake, of Gagetown, W. Jesse (Sally) Zimba, of Deford, Lisa (Victor) Johnson, of Saginaw, Jennifer Zimba, of Gagetown, Edward (Melanie) Zimba, of Deford, and Matthew (Jan) Zimba, of Deford; grandchildren, Nathan Walters, Joshua Walters, Benjamin (Estee) Zimba, Chelsee Zimba, Emmie Zimba and her sixth grandchildren due in June. Funeral Mass and Sunday Mass will be conducted at 3 p.m. on Sunday, April 30, 2006, in St. Michael Catholic Church, Wilmot, with the Rev. George Serour and Sr. Riccardina Silvestri officiating. Interment is in St. Michael Cemetery, Wilmot. Pallbearers for Mrs. Zimba are Jesse Zimba, Edward Zimba, Matthew Zimba, Nathan Walters, Joshua Walters and Benjamin Zimba. Visitation will be from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. today, from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Saturday at the Kranz Funeral Home, Cass City, and from 2 to 3 p.m. on Sunday in the church. A Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. on Saturday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the United Hospice of Marlette. 1
