Sunday, June 3, 2007 – No obituaries reported Monday, June 4, 2007 Leo Eberline, Jr. Leo Eberline Jr., 84, of Caseville, died Sunday, June 3, 2007, at Home Sweet Home in Pigeon after a long battle with cancer. Leo was born July 9, 1922 in Flint to the late Leo and Anna (Ebert) Eberline. He grew up and attended school in Flint before entering into the U.S. Army. Leo served during World War II in the Pacific Theatre. On March 30, 1944, he married Doris Cummings in Flint. Doris died October 4, 1981. Leo married Ellen Baloga in Caseville on October 23, 1982. Ellen died December 5, 2005. Leo was employed for 35 years at the Chevrolet Assembly Plant in Flint retiring on October 1, 1974. He then moved permanently to Caseville. He was a member of the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Caseville. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and especially golfing in the later years of his life. He golfed in leagues at Bird Creek and Pte. Aux Barques. He is survived by his daughter, Sandy and her husband, John Swales, of Bear Lake; and son, Jim, of Hillman; grandchildren, Jeff (Michelle) Kikta, Julie (Ken) Richardson, Angela (Alan) Fisher, Christina (Ken) Goddard, Jim and Joshua Eberline; 15 great grandchildren; sister, Vivian Thacker, of Flint; sister-in-law. Margie Eberline, of Cass City; best friend, Arnold Grant, of Caseville; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother, William Eberline. A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, June 6, 2007, at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Caseville, with Pastor Jim Nihiser officiating. Burial with military honors will be at St. Roch Cemetery, Caseville. Guitar, 83, of Harbor Beach, passed away Sunday, June 3, 2007, at Port Huron Hospital. Born in Harbor Beach on July 31, 1923, he was the son of the late Barney and Julia (Mausolf) Guitar. Alvin and Betty Jeffers were united in marriage on March 24, 1947 in Harbor Beach. He was a veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Army in the Philippines and Japan for over two and a half years. Alvin was a retired employee of Hercules, Inc. in Harbor Beach. He retired in 1983 after working for 38 years. He was a member of Our Lady of Lake Huron Catholic Church and the VFW Post of Harbor Beach. Surviving are his wife, Betty, of Harbor Beach; two sons, Alvin M. Guitar and his wife, Debra, of Hamtramck, and Mark Guitar and his wife, Diana, of Kalkaska; 13 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; and sister, Louise Miller, of Port Huron. Alvin was preceded in death by a daughter, Maxine Leese; three brothers, Lavern, Bernard, and Ralph Guitar; and sisters, Magdaline Jones, Velma Woyciewski, Florence Miller, and Laura Hansel. A parish vigil service will be at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday in the funeral home. John S. Learman John S. Learman, 59, of Harbor Beach, passed away Sunday, June 3, 2007, at Harbor Beach Community Hospital. He was born December 15, 1947 to Evelyn (Terbrack) and the late Arthur Learman. John married Ilene Kociba on November 8, 1969 at St. Edwards Catholic Church in Kinde. He was a member of St. Anthony's Church, St. Anthony's Men's Club and also an usher. John is survived by his wife, Ilene, of Harbor Beach; seven sons, Paul Learman and his wife, Tina, of Harbor Beach, Gary Learman and his special friend, Sue, of Ubly, John Learman and his wife, Jenny, of Harbor Beach, Rick Learman, of Harbor Beach, Matthew Learman and his special friend, Jenny, of Harbor Beach, Eric Learman, of Harbor Beach, and Darrin Learman and his special friend, Kristie, of Harbor Beach; six daughters, Mary Jo Seltz and her husband, Russell, of Harbor Beach, Nancy Learman, of Troy, Janice Learman and her husband, Josh, of Bad Axe, Deanna Learman and her special friend, Jose, of Berkley, Renee Learman and her special friend, Rob, of Ruth, and Sandy Learman and her special friend, Jeff, of Port Austin; 15 grandchildren; his mother, Evelyn; two sisters, Marie (Ed) Holdwick, of Harbor Beach, Theresa (Harold) Holdwick, of Bad Axe; and two brothers, Edward (Mary Ann) Learman, of Oscoda, and Frederick Learman and his special friend, Sally, of Three Rivers. Genevieve (Miller) Mackezyk Mrs. Genevieve (Miller) Mackezyk, 81, of Parisville, passed away Friday, June 1, 2007, after a short battle with cancer at her daughter, Gloria's home in Gladwin with her family by her side under hospice care. Genevieve was born July 29, 1925 in Rapson, daughter of the late August and Magdaline (Polega) Miller. She married Arnold Machezyk on May 17, 1947 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Rapson. He preceded her in death on November 12, 1995. Genevieve graduated from the Rapson School. Before marrying, she worked as a housekeeper in Bad Axe and a waitress in Forestville. During World War II, Genevieve worked as a "Rosie the Riveter" at the Ford River Rouge Plant in Dearborn. After her marriage, she farmed with her husband in Parisville until 1961. She and her husband moved to Bay City where they owned and operated the El Pancho Motel for 20 years. They retired to their farm in Parisville in 1981. Genevieve was a parishioner at St. Mary Catholic Church in Parisville where she was a member of the Rosary Sodality and the Seniors Club. Genevieve loved her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She enjoyed playing euchre, baking, gardening and polka music. Genevieve was a very loving and compassionate person who spent her lifetime caring for her family and others. Genevieve is survived by her two daughters, Nancy Surline and her husband, Randy, of West Branch, Gloria Schindler and her husband, Max, of Gladwin; three sons, Arnold Jr. and his wife, Carol, of Bay City, Larry and his wife, Janet, of Clinton Township, Terry and his wife, Rhoda, of Columbia, Tennessee; 11 grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; one sister, Helen Pyrek, of Gagetown, three sisters-in-law, Lucille Miller, of Warren, Evelyn Mychek, of Port Austin, Genevie Gorman, of Royal Oak; one stepbrother, Joseph Hudo, of Filion; one stepsister, Mary Jane Baranski and her husband, Chester, of Port Austin. Mychek, 84, of Port Austin, passed away Thursday, May 31, 2007, at Courtney Manor in Bad Axe. Harold was born June 8, 1922 in Ruth to the late Frank and Sophie (Kucharczyk) Maikrzek. He married Evelyn Nowak on September 1, 1945 at St. John Catholic Church in Ubly. Harold was a graduate of the Ruth Elementary School. He worked on the family farm until he entered the U.S. Army in Texas to serve in World War II. He worked for Detroit Briggs Manufacturing and then for the Ford Motor Car Company at the Highland Park Plant. He was owner of J & H Hydraulic in Madison Heights for 25 years. Harold and Evelyn moved to Port Austin in 1980. He was a parishioner at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Port Austin. Harold was a member of the Port Austin American Legion Post #499. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating, carpentry and woodworking. Harold is survived by his wife of 61 years, Evelyn, of Port Austin; two sons, Daniel Mychek and his wife, Elizabeth, of Rochester, Jerry Mychek and his wife, Wanda, of Dallas, Texas; one daughter, Michele LaFleur, of Novi; nine grandchildren; four great grandchildren; one sister, Genevieve Gorman, of Royal Oak. Weaver, 91, passed away Friday, June 1, 2007 at Maple Lane Senior Care in Shepherd. She was born March 5, 1916 in Hardin County, Kentucky to Joseph and Bessie (Hodges) Connelly. She married Kenneth Weaver on May 29, 1937. He preceded her in death in 1990. She lived most of her life in the Elkton and Oscoda areas and for the past 10 years, she lived in Midland. She is survived by three children, Pat (Roger) Trudell, of Shepherd, Mark (Stephanie) Weaver, of Wauwautosa, Wisconsin, and Mike (Toby) Weaver, of Sand Point; seven grandchildren; two great grandchildren; and sister, Olive Ann Weekes, of Elizabethtown, Kentucky. She was preceded in death by two sisters and four brothers. A funeral service took place on Monday, June 4, 2007, at St. Vincent DePaul Church in Shepherd with graveside services at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Oscoda with Fr. Richard "Rick" Joseph Weber Richard Joseph "Rick" Weber, 60, of Casa Grande, Arizona, died Monday, May 28, 2007, at Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center in Phoenix. Mr. Weber was born March 1, 1947 in Bad Axe to Betty (Oberski) and Joseph Weber. He was a staff sergeant in the Air Force and worked for General Motors before retirement. He was known for his sense of humor and enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating and his classic car. Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. He formerly lived in Fenton. Survivors include his wife of 41 years, Patricia Kaye; a son, Duane (Gina) Weber, of Maricopa, Arizona; a daughter, Elizabeth (Josh) Turvy, of Flagstaff, Arizona; his father; two brothers, Jake Weber, of Palms, and Allen Weber, of Minden City; a sister, Shelly Siemen, of Grant Township; and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his mother. A Funeral Mass was celebrated on Friday, June 1, 2007, at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church by the Rev. Bardo Antunez. Tuesday, June 5, 2007 – No obituaries reported Wednesday, June 6, 2007 Laura Ann Loeffler Laura Ann (Follendorf) Loeffler, beloved wife, mother, and daughter went to her eternal home on Sunday, June 3, 2007, after having fought a courageous 11-month battle with cancer at the age of 33. She was born September 1, 1973 to David and Barbara Follendorf in LaCrosse, Wisconsin. She graduated from Lutheran High School in Onalaska, Wisconsin and in May of 1995, she graduated form Dr. Martin Luther College in New Ulm, Minnesota. She accepted a call to teach K-4 as well as church organist and choir director in 1995 at New Salem Lutheran Church in Sebewaing. It was there she met her husband, Thomas. They were married in LaCrosse, Wisconsin on June 7, 1997. Moving to Almont, they were blessed with three children, Anna, Allyson and Kyle. She was the church organist and director of music for Cross of Glory Lutheran Church in Washington. In addition to husband, parents and children, Laura Ann is survived by her brother, Jon (Valerie) Follendorf, of LaCrosse, Wisconsin, and grandmother, Anna Wojahn, of LaCrosse, Wisconsin; father and mother-in-law, LeRoy and Sharon Loeffler, of Sebewaing; brother-in-law, Todd (Lena) Loeffler, of Williamston and sister-in-law, Kristen (the Rev. Tom) Smith, of Owatonna, Minnesota. She is also survived by nieces and nephews, Kayla, Kristina, Samantha, Katrina, Martin and Rhylie, in addition to aunts, uncles and cousins. She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Gordon and Lilah Follendorf and Robert Wojahn. Expressions of sympathy may be shared with the family at www.wasikfuneralhome.com Marie Conner Marie Conner, 91, of Jackson, passed away Tuesday, June 5, 2007, at the Huron County Medical Care Facility in Bad Axe. Marie was born April 14, 1916 in Pittsford, the daughter of Haskell and Columbia (Freeze) Clark. Marie was one of four children, all of whom preceded her in death. If you ever had the pleasure of meeting Marie, you would remember her. She was the group chief operator for Michigan Bell Telephone, primarily in Jackson. Marie was a tough but fair boss who set the bar high for all her employees. She arrived first at work even in the worst of weather conditions. Marie dressed impeccably and never would think of carrying a handbag which didn't match her shoes. Her signature red "beehive" hairdo never failed to elicit comments and a second look everywhere she went. It was fun to be seen with her as she knew so many people from work and church. In later years after Marie retired, she was the "captain" who oversaw the feeding of the homeless on the week when her church was called to serve. Marie was a born leader, having been the valedictorian of her graduating class of 1933 and attended yearly schoolwide class reunions. All of her graduating class preceded her in death. She will be sadly missed by her family. Marie is survived by her son, Jerry White, of Port Austin, as well as his wife, Jayne (Krohn) White. Also surviving are Marie's two dear grandchildren, Marc White and his wife, Tonya (Rivard), of Troy, and Sara Jayne White, of Mesa, Arizona. Marie was preceded in death by two husbands, Ralph White and Tom Conner. Marie also will be missed by her adopted family of caregivers at the Huron County Medical Care Facility in Bad Axe. She received excellent and loving care while she made it her home these last couple of years. They nicknamed her "Feisty Red" and said she was truly one of a kind. A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. on Friday, June 8, 2007, at the Wetherby's Funeral Home in Jackson. Burial will follow the funeral in the Evergreen Cemetery. Myrtle Edwards Myrtle Edwards, 69, of Bad Axe, passed away Tuesday, June 5, 2007, at the Huron County Medical Care Facility. She was born July 2, 1937 in Bad Axe to the late George and Eva (Bissett) Edwards. Myrtle was a resident of Bad Axe and a church member at Victory in Christ. She enjoyed spending time with her son, Fred. She enjoyed the park, being outside, cooking and embroidery. She is survived by one son, Fred Edwards, of Bad Axe; nieces and nephew, Mary, James, and George Stephenson, of Bad Axe, Violet Morrison and Betty Appleton, of Bad Axe, and Jerry Stephenson, of Indiana. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Frank and Ray Edwards, and a sister, Doris Stephenson. A funeral service took place this morning, June 6, 2007, at the MacAlpine Funeral Chapel in Bad Axe. Burial was in Colfax Township Cemetery. Bridget A. Lanstra Bridget A. (Ahearn) Lanstra, 55, of Caro and formerly of Bad Axe, passed away Monday, June 4, 2007, at St. Mary's Hospital in Saginaw. She was born January 7, 1952 to Mary Ann (Shine) Ahearn and the late Thomas Ahearn. Bridget was a resident of Caro and a church member at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. She was a graduate of Bad Axe High School. She enjoyed singing, dancing, walking, flowers and gardening. She is survived by two sons, Larry (Deana) Lanstra and Robert (Melissa) Lanstra, all of Warren; one daughter, Renee (Dan) Djurovski, of Imlay City; five brothers, Thomas (Peggy) Ahearn, John (Sue) Ahearn, Frank (Linda) Ahearn, and Robert Ahearn, all of Bad Axe, and Brian (Ilene) Ahearn, of Warren; three sisters, Marlene (Lloyd) Corl, of Ubly, Kay (Ricardo) Barredo, of Duncanville, Texas, and Mary (Leroy) Havens, of Sterling Heights; grandchildren, Daniel, Steven, Victoria, James, Larry, Robert, Joseph, Robert Jr., and Nicolette; and several nieces and nephews. Marchand, 74, of Waterford and formerly of Cass City, passed away Sunday, June 3, 2007, at her home. Cecilia was born and raised in Cass City, the daughter of the late Chas and Johanna Brown and was a 1951 graduate of Cass City High School. She was a member of Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic Church, Waterford, and the Ladies Auxillary-Knights of Columbus, Clarkston, Michigan. Cecilia is survived by her loving husband of 54 years, Gerard "Gerry" Marchand, a son, Joseph (Pamela) Marchand, of Lake Orion, Michigan, two grandchildren, Craig and Paula, and many loving nieces, nephews and friends. Cecilia was predeceased by a daughter, Gail, and a sister, Sophie Hubel. Carlyle McLachlan Carlyle McLachlan, 93, of Port Hope, passed away Tuesday, June 5, 2007, at the Bay Special Care Hospital in Bay City. He was born February 18, 1914 in Argyle to the late Alex and Sadie (Fisher) McLachlan. He married Willo Ludlow on November 25, 1937 in Ubly. She preceded him in death in 2003. Carlyle was a resident of Port Hope. He was employed with the General Motors Company for 35½ years before retiring. He was a member of the Port Hope United Methodist Church and a member of the Am Vet Post No.115 and the No.46 Orion Masonic Lodge. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. He is survived by three sons, Lyle (Carolyn) McLachlan, of Gaylord, Marvin (Cheryl) McLachlan, of Frankfort, and Gary McLachlan, of Port Huron; one brother, Frank McLachlan, of Florida; one sister, Isabele McLachlan, of Illinois; four grandchildren, Scott (Jenny) McLachlan, of Cincinnati, Steve McLachlan, of Auburn Hills, Bryan (Amy) McLachlan, of Colorado, and Jeni (David) Miller, of Gaylord; four great grandchildren, Christine, Nicole, Alex and Emily McLachlan; a special nephew, Bob Dunn, and several nieces and nephews. Thusday, June 7, 2007 John "Jack" Willis Smithers John "Jack" Willis Smithers, 74, a faithful Christian, passed away Tuesday, June 5, 2007 at Covenant Harrison Hospital in Saginaw after a long struggle with health problems. He was born June 7, 1932 in Bad Axe to the late John and Mary Smithers. He was a veteran of the Korean War serving in the Army and was stationed in Fairbanks, Alaska. John also was an employee of General Motors Truck and Bus Plant in Flint retiring after many years of service. On November 2, 1985, he was united in marriage to Marilyn (Brakenberry) Schember in Bad Axe, and they made their home just south of Elkton. In 1991, he started a small business, Country Acres Sales & Service, selling and servicing lawn and garden equipment. He will always be remembered for his sense of humor and amazing personality. John enjoyed fishing, playing cards, collecting classic cars and, of course, mowing the lawn. He also loved spending time with his family and friends. John is truly someone who has touched many people's lives. He will be missed but never forgotten and in the words of a special someone, "we will always love our Grandpa "Jack" and our dad!" Spondike, 71, of Caseville, died late Wednesday, June 6, 2007, at Home Sweet Home in Pigeon. Funeral arrangements are incomplete and are being handled by the Champagne Funeral Chapel of Caseville. Friday, June 8, 2007 Shirley J. Cukr Shirley J. Cukr, 79, of Bad Axe, passed away Friday, April 27, 2007, after a long, courageous battle with a debilitating disease. She was born October 20, 1927 in Mount Clemens, daughter of the late Arthur and Hilda (Florey) Yax. She married Alois Cukr on October 26, 1945 in Mount Clemens. Beloved wife, mother, grandmother and sister, Shirley enjoyed camping, crafting, painting, and spending time with her family. She was patient, loving and kind to all she met. She liked helping people and every person she met soon became her friend. Truly an angel on earth and she will be sorely missed. She is survived by her husband, Alois Cukr, of Bad Axe; one daughter, Kathryn (Douglas) Wassman, of Harbor Beach; one son, Michael (Sharon) Cukr, of Ray Township; two brothers, Robert (Evelyn) Barnes and Richard Barnes; one sister, Donna Allard; one grandson, Cameron Wassman and his fiancee, Susan. She was preceded in death by one sister, Florabelle Fiebelkorn. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, June 13, 2007, at the Huron Medical Care Facility Chapel. Visitation will be held from 1:30 until the time of the service at 2 p.m.on Wednesday at the chapel. Arrangements are being handled by the Kaufman Funeral Home in Bad Axe. Margot "Susie" Yaroch Margot "Susie" Yaroch, 77, of Port Austin, died Saturday, February 24, 2007, at her home. She was born November 23, 1929 in Augsburg, Germany, daughter of the late Anton and Auguste (Vath) Steigleder. Margot married Melvin Yaroch on May 21, 1956 in St. Michael's Catholic Church in Port Austin. Margot is survived by her husband, Melvin; six children, Oskar (Linda) Yaroch, of Kinde, Mario Yaroch, of Wixom, Elroy (Donna) Yaroch, of Commerce Township, Monica Cucchiara, of Sand Point, Bonita (Ron) Barbiera, of Macomb Township, and Renee Yaroch, of Detroit; seven grandchildren, Jeffrey, Kimberly and Michael Yaroch, Maria and Vincenzo Cucchiara, and Colton and Sierra Yaroch; two great grandchildren, Blake and Meya Cucchiara. Cremation has taken place. A Funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, June 12, 2007, at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Port Austin. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at 11 a.m. on Tuesday at the church. Arrangements are being handled by the Knoblock Funeral Home in Kinde. 1
