Briolat Frances A. Briolat, 82, of Cass City, passed away Wednesday, February 21, 2007, at Tendercare, Cass City. Frances was born March 9, 1924 in Siegel Township, the daughter of the late Julius and Frances (Makowski) Klebba. On September 16, 1941, she married Clemence Briolat in Parisville. He passed away on November 15, 1992. Frances was a lifelong resident of Cass City, She attended Duda Country School, worked at Tusco, Hamill Manufacturing, and Provincial House, all in Cass City, and enjoyed gardening. Frances is survived by her children, Marion (Larry) White, of Saginaw, Marvin (Tracy) Briolat, of Davison, Gloria (David) Michalski, of Ubly, Yvonne (Garry) Edzik, of Cass City, and Loretta (Marvin) Smalley, of Ruth;16 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren, and 2 great, great grandchildren. She was predeceased by a daughter, Rita Judd, a great grandson, Duane Benjamin, and brothers, Martin, Joe, John and Frank. A Funeral Mass was conducted on Saturday, February 24, 2007, at St. Pancratius Catholic Church, Cass City, with Fr. Steve Fillion as celebrant. Burial was in Elkland Township Cemetery. Thabet Funeral Home, Cass City, handled the arrangements. Norbert Frank Grifka Norbert Frank Grifka, 80, of Troy and formerly of Minden City and Hazel Park, died Friday, February 23, 2007. He was the beloved husband of Charlotte (Nordquist) Grifka; loving father of Linda Distlerath (Richard) and John Grifka (Laura) and their children, Blake and Jillian Talbot; brother of Ray Grifka (Ruth), Irene Maurer (Jim), Rita Oberski and Bernice Gryczka (Jack). A funeral service was conducted today, Monday, February 26, 2007, at Price Funeral Home, Troy. Interment was at White Chapel Memorial Cemetery, Troy. Memorials may be made to the donor's choice. He was born December 31, 1937 in Port Hope, son of the late Harold and Helen (Bucholtz-Chaplinski) Schmidt Sr. He married Shirley Leppek on February 10, 1984 in Bad Axe. She preceded him in death on September 25, 2001. Mr. Smith was employed by General Cable, Chrysler, and Active Industries before his retirement. His interests included playing the lottery, fishing, playing cards, gardening, making crafts and spending time with his family and friends. He is survived by three daughters, Virginia Gates and her husband, of Florida, Sherri Brenner, of Sterling Heights, and Isabella Talaski, of Bad Axe; two sons, Captain Gerald Smith Jr., and his wife, Olena, of Virginia, and John Smith and his wife, Amy, of Clio; and seven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Harold Smith Jr., Frederick Smith, and Wallace Smith; one sister, Betty Zick. In keeping with his wishes, there will be no service or visitation. Smith, 34, of Bad Axe, passed away Friday, February 23, 2007, at Bay Regional Medical Center in Bay City. She was born May 14, 1972 in Pigeon to the late Robert and Diane (Vuillemot) Smith. Sharon was a resident of Bad Axe who enjoyed visiting with her family and friends. She is survived by two uncles, Earl Vuillemot, of Bad Axe, and John (Ruth) Vuillemot, of Elkton; three aunts, Elaine Vuillemot, of Bad Axe, Rosie Blackstock, of Flushing, and Pearl Bucholz, of Bad Axe; and many cousins, nieces, and nephews. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, February 27, 2007, at the MacAlpine Chapel in Bad Axe. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. on Monday, and 10 to 11 a.m. on Tuesday at the chapel. Burial will be in the Verona Cemetery. Cecil A. Vaughn Cecil A. Vaughn, 86, of Sebewaing, passed away Friday, February 23, 2007, at his home. Born in West Liberty, Kentucky on June 1, 1920, he was the son of the late William Bruce and Sarah Jane (Ison) Vaughn. Cecil and Clevia Leota (Sally) Hamm were united in marriage on July 13, 1946 in Flint. He was an employee of General Motors retiring in 1977 after working for 30 years at the Chevrolet V-8 Plant. He moved to Sebewaing in 1977. He enjoyed watching western movies, gardening, bowling, fishing, cooking and eating. Surviving are two daughters, Rinda Lewis, of Swartz Creek, and Vivian Brophy and her husband, Robert, of Cadillac; five grandchildren, Brian (Angie) Compton, Amy Huffman, Najatta Miller, Chuck (Kelly) Miller, and Sherri Bardlett; great grandchildren, Nichole Compton, Sarah Huffman, Natosha Compton, Lance Huffman, Jessica and David Rejewski, Madisyn and Maressa Miller; one brother, James Vaughn, of Bay City; and several nieces and nephews. Margot "Susie" Yaroch Margot "Susie" Yaroch, 77, of Port Austin, died Saturday, February 24, 2007, at her home. She was born November 23, 1929 in Augsburg, Germany, daughter of the late Anton and Auguste (Vath) Steigleder. Margot married Melvin Yaroch on May 21, 1956 in St. Michael's Catholic Church in Port Austin. Margot is survived by her husband, Melvin; six children, Oskar (Linda) Yaroch, of Kinde, Mario Yaroch, of Wixom, El Roy (Donna) Yaroch, of Commerce Township, Monica Cucchiara, of Sand Point, Bonita (Ron) Barbiera, of Macomb Township, and Renee Yaroch, of Detroit; seven grandchildren, Jeffrey, Kim, and Michael Yaroch, Maria and Vincenzo Cucchiara and Colton and Sierra Yaroch; and two great grandchildren, Blake and Meya Cucchiara. Tuesday, February 27, 2007 Robert Lee Pitcole I Robert Lee Pitcole I, 89, of Caseville, died Sunday, February 25, 2007, at Huron County Medical Care Facility in Bad Axe of pulmonary disease. Born July 14, 1917 in Erie, Pennsylvania, Bob was the only child of Frank and Irene (Sittinger) Pitcole. Bob served in the U.S. Navy in World War II aboard the USS California. Bob married Barbara Watters, of Taylor, on October 29, 1967 in Detroit. He retired from Madison Electric of Detroit in 1984. In 1987, Bob and Barb moved from Sterling Heights to Caseville. He was a member of the Caseville Eagles No. 3690, St. Roch Catholic Church, and a former member of the Knights of Columbus. His hobbies and interests include golfing, fishing, card playing and sports. Bob is survived by his wife, Barbara; children, Robert II (Hazel), of Sagamore Hills, Ohio, Lawrence (Ellen), of Fenton, and Susan (Joel) Casey, of Sterling Heights; grandchildren, Kevin, Christine, Jason, Ross, Brian, Mary, Megan and Colin; great grandchildren, Emily, Adam, Aidan, Ren, Sam, Jacob and Alex; stepchildren, Michael, Patrick and Kevin Perino; stepgrandchildren, Michael, Jenna, Susan, Jackie, Danny, Brian and Mark; and the mother of his children, Dorothy M. Susalla, 82, of Bad Axe and Ruth, passed away Sunday, February 25, 2007, at the Huron County Medical Care Facility in Bad Axe. Rita was born September 10, 1924 in Ruth to the late Patrick and Minnie (Sadro) Coyne. She married Raymond H. Susalla on November 29, 1941 at SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Ruth. He preceded her in death on January 5, 1972. Rita resided in Ruth her whole life and was a graduate of the SS. Peter and Paul Elementary School. She was a lifelong parishioner at SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Ruth where she was a member of the Christian Mothers. She enjoyed crocheting, gardening, playing cards, especially euchre, crafting and visiting with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Rita is survived by two daughters, Sandra Drews, of Bad Axe, and Bonnie Susalla, of Ruth; one son, Raymond Susalla and his wife, Connie, of Harbor Beach; 10 grandchildren, Lynn, R.T., Tracey, Jay, Brad, Missy, Jill, Eric, Nicole and Aaron; 10 great grandchildren, Sarah, Ashlyn, Brian, Emily, Rachel, Dru, Abbi, Megan, Trevor and Ellen; several stepgreat grandchildren; and one daughter- in-law, Marie Susalla, of Cass City. She was preceded in death by one son, Ronald Susalla Sr.; one grandson, Eddie Drews; one son-in-law, Edward Drews; three brothers; and one sister. There will be a Christian Mothers' rosary at 3 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home. Wednesday, February 28, 2007 Rev. Adolf M. Bickel The Rev. Adolf M. Bickel, 86, of Napoleon, Ohio, passed away Sunday morning, February 25, 2007, at the Fulton Manor, Wauseon, Ohio. He was born July 14, 1920 in Birch Run to the late Rev. Fred and Lydia (Hetzner) Bickel. On July 29, 1948, he married Irene E. Goertz and she preceded him in death on November 27, 1999. On March 25, 1934, the Rev. Bickel publicly confessed his faith in the rite of confirmation in the St. John Lutheran Church where his father was pastor. He attended high school at the Michigan Lutheran Seminary in Saginaw. Later he attended Concordia College in Fort Wayne, Indiana and graduated from Concordia Seminary in St. Louis, Missouri on January 17, 1945. His first call was to Emmaus Lutheran Church and Faith Lutheran Church of Sexsmith and Grande Prairie, Alberta, Canada. He was ordained and installed as pastor there in April 1945. In 1948, he accepted a call to be pastor of St. Stephens Lutheran Church in Shelby and Our Savior Lutheran Church of Hart. In 1956, he accepted a call to be pastor of St. John Lutheran Church of Kilmanagh. In 1965, he accepted the call to St. John Lutheran Church, Freedom Township, Henry County, Ohio. In April 1979, he retired as pastor but continued in visitation of the shut-ins. During his last year of life, he resided at Country View Haven Nursing Home, rural Napoleon, Ohio, where he served as chaplain. He was a founding member of the German Lutheran Heritage Association. He held several Ohio District Church offices and also authored two books, "The Emigrant" and "Our Founding Father." He is survived by three sons, Jim (Paula) Bickel, of Waukesha, Wisconsin, Brian (Lori) Bickel, of Napoleon, Ohio, and Ken (Gail) Bickel, of St. Louis, Missouri; and daughter, Sharon (Carey) Damman, of Napoleon, Ohio; three brothers, Herman (Helen) Bickel, of Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, Eldor (Dorothy) Bickel, of Lansing, and Kurt (Betty) Bickel, of Convoy, Ohio; one sister, Elvira (Walter) Neumeyer, of Lapeer; 11 grandchildren; and three great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife of more than 50 years of marriage; and three brothers Victor, Ottomar and Lester Bickel. Services will be at 2 p.m. on Thursday, March 1, 2007, at St. John Lutheran Church, Freedom Township, Henry County, Ohio, with the Rev. Stephen Niermann officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Clayton, 79, of Dwight Township, passed away Sunday, February 25, 2007, at his home. He was born Feb. 27, 1927 in Geneva, New York to the late Leslie and Georgia (James) Clayton. He was united in marriage to Florence Emerson-Ruark on November 4, 1984 in Port Austin. Mr. Clayton was a resident of Dwight Township since 1969. He was a veteran of World War II Army Air Corp where he served in the Merchant Marines for one year and three years as Radio Operator Corporal. He attended Milwaukee School of Engineering and was employed 36 years as a heating and cooling contractor for the Defense Department. He was a member of the Kinde Presbyterian Church and the American Legion in Port Austin. He participated in Bluewater Youth for Christ and volunteered at church. From 1972 to 1980, he was a Scout Master and member of Committee Troop 587. Norman enjoyed tinkering around home and visiting with his family and friends. He is survived by his wife, Florence, of Dwight Township; one son, Leslie (Michele) Clayton, of Alma; one daughter, Judith (Duane) Emlinger, of Ionia; one stepson, David (Julie) Ruark, of Lansing; one stepdaughter, Beth (Dane) Bezemek, of Davisburg; one brother, Robert (Patricia) Clayton, of Tucson, Arizona; 12 grandchildren, Erik Emlinger, T. Chalmers Clayton, Addison Clayton, Talmon Clayton, Victoria Clayton, Nicole Clayton, Erin Ruark, Ian Ruark, Allen Bezemek, Emily Bezemek, Danielle Bezemek and Kathleen Bezemek; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Vicky Lyn Clayton; and an infant granddaughter, Anna Ruark. Day, 93, of Grand Blanc and formerly of Bad Axe, passed away Monday, February 26, 2007, at her home in Grand Blanc. She was born February 17, 1914 in Huron Township, daughter of the late George and Margaret (McDonald) Day. She was a member of the RLDS church, and taught in New River and Kipper Schools in Huron County. She taught four years in Walnut Lake School in West Bloomfield Township in Oakland County. She received her bachelor's degree in Home Economics, and worked as an "Electric Living Adviser" for Detroit Edison, retiring in 1975. She was a volunteer at the Huron Medical Care Facility, a charter member of the Bad Axe Business and Professional Women's Club, a member of the Bad Axe Historical Society, and the Interfaith Council "Clothe a Child Project." She is survived by several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by three brothers, William, Murdoch and Sherman Day; and three sisters, Elizabeth Fabian, Helen Fuller and Beatrice Day. A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Thursday, March 1, 2007, at the Kaufman Funeral Home in Bad Axe. Officiating will be Elder Dale Day. Burial will be in Colfax Cemetery. VanHorn, 91, of Bradenton, Florida and formerly of Kingston, died Monday, February 26, 2007, in Hospice House, Bradenton, Florida. He was born March 12, 1915 in Kingston Township to John Edward and Lillian (Silvernail) VanHorn. He married Letitia Tallman on June 17, 1939 in Deford. She died October 11, 1991. He then married Laura M. Morrison on October 24, 1992 in Bradenton, Florida. She died October 7, 1998. Francis retired from the Department of Mental Health Wajamega (Caro Regional Center) after 30 years of work as a nurse attendant. He also farmed for over 30 years. Francis was an active member of the Free Methodist Church, the Deford United Methodist Church and the Bayshore Nazarene Church in Bradenton, Florida. He enjoyed music and photography. He was cared for by Laura's daughter, Sandra Peterson, in his last few years. Francis is survived by his stepdaughters, Sandra Peterson, of Bradenton, Florida, and Connie Borden, of Massachusetts; stepgranddaughters, Kellie (Lance) Karpp and Holly (James) Goodin; stepgreat grandchildren, Kayla, Sydney, Lainey, Alex, Mattie and Grant; sisters, Naomi (Robert) Barber, of Roscommon, and Geraldine (Howard) Conely, of Mayville; sister-in-law, Gladys VanHorn, of Deford, Juanita VanHorn, of Bradenton; and many nieces and nephews. She was born March 22, 1941 to the late Claude and Ila (Gotham) Sherman in Unionville. Pearl married Anthony Zaleski on July 22, 1961 in St. Columbkille Church of Ubly. He preceded her in death on March 22, 2006. Pearl loved playing bingo, working in her flower garden, and being around her family and friends, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was born February 22, 1953 in Bay City, daughter of Ray and Darlene (Hill) Serviss. She was the dearest mother of Shawn Anczewski, of Caseville, Jodi (Greg) Donahue, of New York, Jason Anczewski and his companion, Megan Dufty, of Caseville, and Nicholas Kruchkow, of Bay City; she leaves behind her best friend, Gregory Kruchkow, of Bay City. She was the devoted grandmother of Meagan and Courtney Luce, of New York; the beloved daughter of Darlene Serviss; the loving sister of Daryl "Buck" Hill, of Caseville; fond aunt of Jamie and Sheila Ilah; and great aunt of Ashton. Debra was preceded in death by her father, Ray, in 1976. In accordance with Debra's wishes, cremation has taken place. Helen J. Ignash Helen J. Ignash, 88, of Port Austin, died Thursday, March 1, 2007. at Huron Medical Center in Bad Axe. She was born January 27, 1919 in Port Austin to the late Michael and Mary (Zimpkoski) Sosnoski. She married Raymond Ignash on October 28, 1938 at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Port Austin. He preceded her in death on September 30, 1967. Helen was a member of the St. Michael's Catholic Church in Port Austin, Holy Rosary Sodality and American Legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed quilting, playing cards, dancing and watching the Detroit Tigers. She also loved spending time with her family and friends. She is survived by three children, James Ignash, of Evart, Karl and his wife, Judy, of Bad Axe and Mary Ellen and her husband, Matt Babcock, of Port Austin; four grandchildren, Ann (Dean) Weeks, of Big Rapids, Jennifer (Phillip) Pressotto, of White House, Tennessee, Karen Ignash, of Waterford, and Amy Ignash, of Freeland; three great grandchildren; one great great grandchild; one brother, Raymond (Gustavia) Sosnoski, of Bad Axe; one sister, Agnes, of Port Austin; two sisters-in-law, Vera Sosnoski, of Bad Axe, Dolly Sosnoski, of Port Austin; and several nieces and nephews. Koneczny, 91, of Caseville, died suddenly, Tuesday, February 27, 2007, at Scheurer Hospital in Pigeon. A Funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. on Monday, March 5, 2007, at St. Roch Catholic Church in Caseville. Visitation will be from noon to 7 p.m. on Sunday at the Champagne Funeral Chapel of Caseville.
