Sunday, April 29, 2007 – No obituaries reported Monday, April 30, 2007 Chuck Eugene Connors Chuck Eugene Connors, 79, of Filion, passed away Friday, April 27, 2007, at Huron Medical Center. He was born July 16, 1927 to the late William J. and Mary (Macey) Connors. He was united in marriage to Sophie Stiefel on June 26, 1948 in Bad Axe. Mr. Connors was a resident of Filion and a church member at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Bad Axe. He served as Corporal in the United States Air Corps. He was employed with Thumb Oil and Gas for 10 years. In 1957, he purchased Connors Hardware, managing it until his retirement in 1986. He loved deer hunting, playing cards, having coffee with friends, gardening, his cabin in Curran and spending time with his family. He is survived by his wife, Sophie, of Filion; two sons, Charles (Marge) Connors, of Bad Axe, and Donald Connors, of Filion; one brother, David Connors, of Filion; one sister, Katherine "Betty" Bastian, of Ferndale; one granddaughter, Kelsey Connors, of Bad Axe; two stepgrandchildren, Corinna (Michael) Adams, of Bad Axe, and Robert (Heidi) Miller, of Saginaw; four great step-grandchildren, Kyle Adams, Travis Adams, Alexis Adams and Austin Adams, all of Bad Axe; two sisters-in-law, Luella Connors, of Filion, and Betty Jo Garner, of Canton. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Kenneth Connors, Clifford Connors, William Connors and Glen Connors; one brother-in-law, Wilbur Bastian; and three sisters-in-law, Vera Connors, Florence Connors and Martha Connors. A funeral service was conducted today, Monday, April 30, 2007, at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Bad Axe. Burial will be in Colfax Cemetery. MacAlpine Funeral Chapel in Bad Axe handled the arrangements. Memorials may be made to the Our Savior Lutheran Building Fund. Shirley J. Cukr Shirley J. Cukr, 79, of Bad Axe, passed away on Friday, April 27, 2007, after a long courageous battle with a debilitating disease. She was born on October 20, 1927 in Mount Clemens, daughter of the late Arthur and Hilda (Florey) Yax. She married Alois Cukr on October 26, 1945 in Mount Clemens. Beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and sister, Shirley enjoyed camping, crafting, painting, and spending time with her family. She was patient, loving and kind to all she met. She liked helping people and every person she met soon became her friend. Truly an angel on earth she will be sorely missed. She is survived by her husband, Alois, of Bad Axe; one daughter, Kathryn (Douglas) Wassman, of Harbor Beach; one son, Michael (Sharon) Cukr, of Ray Township; two brothers, Robert (Evelyn) Barnes, Richard Barnes; one sister, Donna Allard; one grandson, Cameron Wassman and his fiancée, Susan. She was preceded in death by one sister, Florabelle Fiebelkorn. A memorial service will be conducted at a later date and it will be announced. Arrangements are being handled by the Kaufman Funeral Home in Bad Axe. Pearl M. Kain Pearl M. Kain, 97, formerly of Gagetown and Pigeon, passed away Saturday, April 28, 2007, at Huron Medical Care Facility near Bad Axe after a brief illness. She was born May 4, 1909 in Columbia Township near Unionville, daughter of the late John and Melvina (Bedore) Comment. On April 25, 1931 she was united in marriage to Leslie (Ted) Kain at St. Agatha Catholic Church in Gagetown. He preceded her in death on December 31, 1991 after over 60 years of marriage. Mrs. Kain attended and graduated from Frenchtown Rural School and lived on the family farm for 58 years before moving to Country Bay Village and Country Gardens in Pigeon. She was a member of St. Agatha Catholic Church and a member of the Buena Vista Hobby Club in Holiday, Florida where she and her husband spent many winters. She was also a member of the Farm Bureau. She enjoyed sewing, gardening, flowers, card games, and visiting with her family and friends. Her survivors include a son, Merlin (Lois) Kain, of Bad Axe; four daughters, Janet (Jim) Czowski, of Essexville, Diane (Robert) Humann, of Eastpointe, Kathie (Rich) Mika, of Luzerne, and Lynda (David) Munhall, of Flushing; eight grandchildren; a stepgranddaughter; seven great grandchildren; four stepgreat grandsons; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by five brothers, Floyd, Art, Leroy, Donald, and Willard Comment and five sisters, Lila Rodden, Gertrude Clifford, Margaret Joyce, Lorraine Knetchges, and Elaine Jackson. A Funeral Mass will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, May 2, 2007, from St. Agatha Catholic Church in Gagetown, with Fr. Steve Filion officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The vigil service will be conducted at 7 p.m. on Tuesday at the Meyersieck-Bussema Funeral Home in Pigeon, led by Sr. Dorothy Ann, O.P., Parish Pastoral Administrator at St. Agatha Catholic Church, and Sr. Marcia Andrews, Parish Pastoral Administrator at St. Francis Borgia Catholic Church in Pigeon. Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home and from 10 a.m. until the time of Mass at 11 a.m. on Wednesday at St. Agatha Catholic Church, Gagetown. Karr, 82, of Caro, died Thursday, April 26, 2007, in Caro Community Hospital. He was born April 23, 1925 in Cass City to Floyd H. and Helen (Reed) Karr. He married Joyce E. Asher on August 1, 1947 in Cass City. She died September 10, 1996. Ellis joined the U.S. Navy when he was 17. He was stationed in Pearl Harbor during World War II. He then worked in communication for the Secret Service at the Pentagon. After returning home, Ellis worked at Eaton (Grede) Foundry until he retired. He was a member of Cass City United Methodist Church, helping to build the new church. Ellis enjoyed hunting, fishing, horses, and working on his cars. Ellis is survived by his children, Joyce Ann (John) Schwartz, of Deford, Patti (Duane) Dietz, of Hiram, Georgia, Scott (Stacey) Karr, of Deford; grandchildren, Jeff and Jeremy Schwartz, Eric and Kevin Dietz; Liz Karr; great grandchildren, Madison, Natalie; and special friend, Ruth Freeman, of Caro; sister, Aletha Misch; sister-in-law, Doris Karr; many nieces and nephews. Maurer Sr., 68, of Ubly, died Saturday, April 28, 2007, at his home with his family by his side. Clayton was born July 3, 1938 in Sigel Township to the late Bernard A. and Albena J. (Buchkowski) Maurer. Clayton and Joan Morley were united in marriage on September 30, 1967 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Bad Axe. Tuesday, May 1, 2007 Private First Class Garrett Knoll Private First Class Garrett Knoll, 23, of Verona, was killed Monday, April 23, 2007, while on duty northeast of Baghdad, Iraq. He was born in Mt. Clemens on July 8, 1983. Garrett attended Verona Mills Country School from grades 5-8 and graduated in 2001 from Bad Axe High School, where he participated and worked hard on the cross country squad and track team. During the summer months, he enjoyed playing golf and working at the Verona Hills Golf Club on the maintenance/custodial staff, as well as in the bag room. He was known as a quiet and polite young man who had a good sense of humor and enjoyed his friends. He liked to fish, hunt, and work on automobiles. Garrett attended Ferris State University for three years and then moved on to attend Baron Institute, Hartford, Connecticut, and graduated in 2005. He loved being a United States Army combat medic, soldier, and paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne Division based in Fort Bragg, North Carolina. He is survived by his grandparents, Robert and Ruth Knoll, of Verona, and Nadine Rinner, of Oregon; two aunts, Suzanne (Jeffrey) Myers, of Arlington, Texas, and Rebecca Russell, of Roseville; cousins, Brianne Myers, of New York, Justin (Lauren) Myers, of Arlington, Texas, Alecia Russell, of Mt. Wednesday, May 2, 2007 Julia F. Day On a glorious, sunny day, our Lord and Savior called Julia home. Upon arrival she was greeted with open arms by her husband, Bud, and son, George. Arms wrapped around her, they escorted her thru the pearly gates of Heaven. Julia F. Day, 91, died Saturday, December 30, 2006, at her home in Grand Rapids. She was born May 7, 1915 in Ubly to Stanley and Elizabeth (Stffik) Kubacki. She married Gaylord "Bud" Day on April 12, 1937 at St. John's Church in Ubly. She was a resident of Ubly for many years before moving to live with her daughter in Wyoming. She was a member of Christian Mothers for over 50 years. She worked as a nurse at the Cass City Hospital, worked at Lowe's and Shomak's Grocery Store. Julia was appointed to a position at the United States Post Office in Ubly where she worked until retirement. Julia's first priority in life was to love her husband and family. She loved tending her flower garden, canning vegetables, quilting, sewing, playing cards, bowling, singing in the Alabama Jubliee, vacationing with her family and friends, particularly bus trips and garage sales with her dearest friend, Thelma. Julie's famous words were "have purse; will travel and shop." Rismiller Robert C. Rismiller, 83, of Forestville, passed away Monday, April 30, 2007, in the Lakeview Extended Care and Rehab Center of the Harbor Beach Community Hospital. Born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa on August 10, 1923, he was the son of the late Harvy and Nora Margaret (Steers) Rismiller. Robert was a retired Senior Chief Petty Officer of the U.S. Navy serving in World War II, Korean War and Vietnam War. During his 25 years of active duty for our country, Bob was in the Submarine Division 41, serving on many submarines. On August 2, 1990, Robert and Geraldine Roland were united in marriage in Sandusky. Bob was a member of the American Legion, the Moose Lodge and Carpenters Local 687 in Detroit. He is survived by his wife, Geraldine, of Forestville; a daughter, Caroline Rismille; and sister, Jean VanDusen and her husband, Paul, of Florida; his dog, Pal; and stepchildren, Theresa (Ross) Delano, of Warren, Julia (Allen) Silver, of St. Gratiot, Ann (Harlan) Reinke, of Port Hope, Joe (Lori) Frey, of Lakeport, Roland (Kathy) Frey, of Alpena, and Kathleen (Jimbo) Frey, of Fort Gratiot; and several stepgrandchildren and great stepgrandchildren. Reehl, 89, of Alamo, Texas and formerly of Bad Axe, passed away suddenly at his home Friday, April 27, 2007. Elger was born in Bad Axe on June 19, 1917 to George and Ina (Townley) Reehl. He was united in marriage in 1940 in Toledo, Ohio to Hildegard Scmude. They resided in Toledo, Ohio area for more than 50 years, and then they retired to Alamo, Texas. Elger is survived by his wife, Hilda; daughter, Joanne Randall, of Texas; son-in-law, John Lemke, of Ohio; three granddaughters; one great granddaughter; sisters, Marie Langley, of Bad Axe, Betty Scofield and Beatrice Baker, both of Cass City. Jordan, 81, of Cass City, died unexpectedly Thursday, May 3, 2007, in Caro Community Hospital. She was born April 24, 1926 in Detroit to Clifford and Leona (Coulter) Eickhoff. She married Frank Jordan on August 10, 1946 in Hazel Park. He died August 16, 1981. Myra worked as a waitress at Martin's Restaurant for 13 years and then for Rex Binder Lawn and Garden Equipment for about 18 years. Myra volunteered for Caro Community Schools as a crossing guard for a few years before her illness. Myra was a life member of the DAV Auxiliary and a charter member of Holbrook Baptist Church. Myra is survived by her children, Judy (Lloyd) Montreuil, of Cass City, Nancy (Dalbert) Wright, of Cass City, Robert (Patricia) Jordan, of Applegate; 12 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; one great great grandson; two step- grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Frank Jordan, Jr.; grandson, Dalbert Wright, Jr.; sister, Kathleen Martin; and brother, William Eickhoff. David Kelterborn David Kelterborn, 81, of Port Austin, died Wednesday, May 2, 2007, at the Huron County Medical Care Facility in Bad Axe. He was born in Caseville on November 7, 1925, son of the late August and Freida (Neffendorf) Kelterborn. Dave married Lorraine Knoblock on January 3, 1953 at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Port Austin. Dave graduated from Port Austin High School and served in the Merchant Marines and in the United States Army and was a member of the Frank Horetski Post 499 of the American Legion in Port Austin. Dave retired from the Cyclone Fence Division of U. S. Steel in 1985 and then worked for Fence City from 1986 until 1993 when he moved from Williamsville, New York to Port Austin. He enjoyed tennis, gardening, playing cards, games and traveling. He especially liked spending time with his grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, Lorraine, of Port Austin; one son, David (Beverly) Kelterborn, of Acworth, Georgia; three daughters, Sandra (Joe) Pufahl, of Cutchogue, New York, Deanna (Larry) Peters, of Alpharetta, Georgia, and Laura (Marks) Alexander, of Decatur, Georgia; nine grandchildren, Kelsy and Matthew Kelterborn, Kyle and Colleen Lehman, David, Dylan, Laura and Madelyn Peters and Kaia Alexander; and several nieces and nephews. William "Bill" Roberts William "Bill" Roberts, 65, of Ubly, and Chief Executive Officer of the Gemini Group and Chairman of the Northstar Financial Group, passed away Thursday, May 3, 2007, at his residence under hospice care with his family by his side. Bill was born September 26, 1941 in Minden City to the late William and Marie (Peters) Roberts. He married Marie Glaza on June 23, 1962 at St. John Catholic Church in Ubly. Bill was a graduate of the SS. Peter and Paul High School. He was a parishioner at St. John Catholic Church in Ubly. Bill was a member of the Ubly Village Council, the Ubly Fire Department and the Ubly Lions Club. He was a member of the United States Trotters Association. Bill loved and enjoyed being with his grandchildren, family and friends, playing cards, riding his Harley, raising race horses, and traveling. Glenn Swartzendruber Glenn Swartzendruber, 90, of Pigeon, passed away Wednesday, May 2, 2007, under hospice care at Courtney Manor in Bad Axe. He was born in Iowa County, Iowa on September 8, 1916, the son of the late George and Noami (Swartzendruber) Swartzendruber. On December 18, 1938, he was united in marriage to Erma Laura Yoder at the West Union Mennonite Church in Parnell, Iowa and the couple moved to Pigeon. Mr. Swartzendruber was a farmer, dairyman, beekeeper, clock repairman, avid fisherman and meticulous gardener. He enjoyed watching purple martins in his yard. He was a member of the Pigeon River Mennonite Church, Pigeon. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Erma; two sons, Lowell "Pete" (Cathern) Swartzendruber, of Sebewaing, and Clarence Swartzendruber, of Pigeon; six grandchildren, Jenny (Gary) Cygan, Jonathan Eric Swartzendruber, Laura Ewald, Lisa (Don) Kosinski, Jeff Swartzendruber, and Shannon (Morgan) Swartzendruber; 10 great grandchildren, Sarah, Danielle, Lucas, Justine, Kayla, Dakota, Jordan, Seth, Nathan and Landon; a sister, Velma (Ira) Esch, of Mio; and many nieces and nephews. Wyman Frances L. Wyman, 85, of Sebewaing and formerly of Bay Port, died Thursday, May 3, 2007, at the Huron County Medical Care Facility in Bad Axe following a two-year illness. She was born March 8, 1922 in Fairhaven Township, daughter of the late Ernest and Muriel (Harris) Ballard. Frances had been employed at the Caro Regional Center in Caro for 14 years before retiring in 1983. She enjoyed knitting and especially enjoyed crossword puzzles. Surviving are two daughters and their spouses, Sally and Darrell Rievert, of Sebewaing, and Sheryl and John Kuhl, of Bay Port; 12 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two sons, E. Lynn Herman and Eugene Wyman; three brothers, Bill, Wendell and Burnell Ballard; and two sisters, Lula and Vesta. A funeral service will take place at 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 6, 2007, at the Dinkel-Juengel Funeral Home in Sebewaing. Elder Ervin Haley will officiate with burial in Old Bay Port Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 p.m. until the time of the service at 2 p.m. on Sunday. Memorials may be made to Community of Christ Church in Bay Port or the Huron County Medical Care Facility. 1
