Roman Geiger Family Quarrel Ends in Suicide Ruth, Jan 21 - A family quarrel Tues night in the Theodore Geiger farm home, 2 1/2 miles north of Ruth, ended in the suicide of the eldest son, Roman, 34, Huron Co law enforcement officers say. Corner Alden A MacAlpine, Prosecuting Attorney Arthur M Bach and Sherriff Merritt R McBride agreed that Geiger ended his life by shooting himself in the chest with a 12-guage shotgun in a storeroom on the 2nd floor of the house. McBride said he received a telephone call about 6 p.m. from Mrs Geiger in Ruth that "there is family trouble, come right out." Mrs Geiger had gone to Ruth as there is no telephone in the home. When McBride arrived, he was told by the family that Roman had gone to the second floor and that the report of a gun was heard a few minutes later. McBride found the body of Roman in the storeroom. He called MacAlpine and Bach for further investigation. The officers pieced together a story of a family quarrel, which started late Tues afternoon when Roman returned home from Ruth. McBride said, "They quarreled about their 18 yr old sister, Agnes, attending high school in Ruth, saying it cost too much money. They also fought about who would do the chores. "Another brother, Andrew, scuffled with Agnes, and Roman stopped them. He then left the house, got into his car, drove down the lane to the road, turned around and drove back to the house. Another quarrel started near the garage. Roman apparently took the shotgun from the garage when he went to the 2nd floor storeroom where he shot himself". McBride said Geiger had two deep cuts on the head, apparently suffered in the fighting. Mc Bride added that two guns, with stocks broken from the barrels, were found outside the house. He said Geiger apparently obtained the shotgun from the garage. Powder marks on the hands of the dead man and lack of any signs of a struggle in the storeroom convinced officers that Roman ended his own life, they said. Bach said members of the family said Roman ws subject to "nervous spells" the last 10 years, particularly when he was drinking. Bach said he regards the investigation as closed. Remains of Geiger were removed to Edward Zinger & Son funeral home in Ubly.
