The submitter has given permission to the MIGenWeb Archives to store the file permanently for free access. _____________________________________________________________________ Mary McEachin & Frank Sweeney Miss Mary McEachin, Sheridan 16, sophomore of Bad Axe high school and Frank Sweeney, 71, Sheridan farmer, were killed and 7 others injured in an automobile collision on M-53, nine miles SW of Bad Axe about 9:30 Fri night. Cars driven by James Sweeney, 21 Sheridan, and James Champion, 17 Cass City, collided at the intersection of M-53 and Ubly road, near St Columbkille's church. Of the injured, Miss Isabell Sweeney, 24, Sheridan, is in Hubbard Mem Hosp and was in a critical condition today with internal injuries. Miss Hannah Sweeney, 28, Sheridan, is in a serious condition in Bad Axe Gen Hosp with scalp lacerations. She was unconscious until Sat morning, but improved during the day. Others injured in the crash are champion and Edward Ross, 17, Cass City, the only occupants of the Champion car, who were taken to Pleasant Home hosp, Cass City, with facial lacerations and bruises; James Sweeney, Miss Annie Sweeney, 26, Miss Virginia Sowden, 17, all of Sheridan. James Sweeney is in Bad Axe Gen Hosp with a fractured right leg and lacerations of the nose and eye, Miss Annie Sweeney, niece of Frank Sweeney, is in Hubbard Mem Hosp with head lacerations and bruises. Miss Sowden is in the same hosp with lacerations on both legs. She also suffered burns on the face from lime which had spilled from a sack in the Sweeney car. An inquest was ordered Sat by prosecuting Attorney Thomas R McAllister, to be held Fri, April 21. The crash occurred soon after services were held in St Columbkille's church. The 7 occupants of the Sweeney car had started east for Ubly and stopped at the intersection to allow a car to pass on M-53 from the north. As they crossed the road the Champion car, traveling north, struck the rear end of the car. Frank Sweeney, riding in the rear seat, was killed instantly and Miss McEachin, sitting with him, lived about 10 minutes. Funeral services for Mr Sweeney will be held Tues at 9:30 a.m. at St Columbkille's church, Sheridan. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Mr Sweeney is survived by 4 daughters, Mrs Ernest Young, Detroit, Mrs Allan McCarty, Argyle; Hannah and Isabell Sweeney, at home; 3 sons, Malcolm, Sheridan; David and William, both at home; 5 brothers, Martin, New Mexico; John, Superior, WI; James, Stephen and Bryan, all of Sheridan; 3 sisters, Mrs John McIntyre, Sheridan; Mrs William Bachand, Superior, WI and Mrs. Margaret McIntyre, Port Huron. Funeral services for Miss McEachin are to be held Wed at 10 o'clock slow time at St Columbkille's church, Sheridan. Burial will be in the church cemetery. She is survived by her father, John McEachin, Sheridan; 6 brothers, Angus McEachin, radioman 20c, aboard a U S warship in the Atlantic; Pvt. John McEachin, Camp Laredo, TX; Cornelius McEachin, a student at Sacred Heart Seminary, Detroit; Raymond McEachin, Bad Axe; James and Charles McEachin, both at home, and a sister, Flora McEachin, at home.
