The submitter has given permission to the MIGenWeb Archives to store the file permanently for free access. _____________________________________________________________________ Two Bad Axe Men Die in Car Accident Woman Escapes Drowning in Ditch; Vet, 2 Days out of Army One of Victims Bad Axe, June 4 - Flood swollen waters of a drainage ditch on North Whitelam street a short distance outside the north city limits early Sunday claimed the lives of 2 Bad Axe men while a young woman miraculously escaped death. The dead are: George Irvin McDonald, 28, discharged soldier, son of Mr & Mrs Alex McDonald. Ernest Harold Russell, 24, employee of the local plant of Borden Farm products company of MI, son of Mr & Mrs Crellen Russell. The rescued: Miss Annabel McGee,24, daughter of Daniel McGee. The accident occurred some time Sun morning when an auto, driven by Russell, crashed through the railing of a culvert into the ditch, which usually has only 2 or 3 feet of water but heavy rains had raised the water to about 8 feet. The partly submerged auto was discovered about 8 a.m. by Charles Ward, a farmer, who lives near the scene of the accident. He called Trooper Charles Conn..... McDonald received an honorable discharge from the Army after serving 68 months, including 3 years overseas. McDonald was an uncle of Russell, whose mother is a sister of McDonald. Double funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wed in First Meth ch. Burial will be in Colfax cemetery. McDonald is survived by his parents; 6 sisters, Mrs Cornelius Russell, Bad Axe; Mrs John Brown, NY; Mrs Benjamin Byarski and Mrs Edward Osentoski, both of Detroit; Mrs Gustav Bailey, New Haven and Miss Hazel McDonald, Van Dyke, MI; and 3 brothers, Ronald and John McDonald, both of Bad Axe; and Pfc Howard McDonald, in Italy. He was born in Caseville, June 14, 1916 He attended Bad Axe high school Before he was discharged he was a private first class. His foreign service included Iceland, England, France and Belgium. Russell is survived by his parents, 3 sisters, Miss Edna Russell Detroit, Mrs James McAllister, Hazel Park , Miss Arlene Russell, Bad Axe and his grandparents, Mr & Mrs Alex McDonald. He was born April 15, 1921 in Bad Axe. The remains will be in the MacAlpine funeral home until Wed when they will be taken to First Meth ch.
