He was born June 23, 1922. A child of the Great Depression, Larry had tolerance and patience for the discomforts and hardships of life. At 14, with an eighth grade education, he worked his parents’ farm until he was drafted at age 22 into the Army during World War II. He served as a medic in Germany and Switzerland. Larry continued to care for the family farm and his mother after his father died too soon in his 50s. At 42, Larry married Lillian Page and became a father at 43. His last child was born when Larry was 52. He continued to work the farm with Lilly and his children, Steven, Debra, Kathy, Janis, Jim, Pat and Tom for the next 28 years. At 68, he made a trip with his family to the Grand Old Opry hoping to see Minnie Pearl. As he journeyed through life, he learned to show how much he cared about his family. For example, at 77, showing affection for a granddaughter by patting her on the head, and at 82, shedding tears for his last born son who died at age 30. At age 85, he first started to share his experiences in the war. At 90, he still enjoyed a spirited game of euchre with Uncle Leroy Page and Uncle Joe and Aunt Marian Mazure. At 91, he was still attending grandchildren’s graduations and was observed volleying a balloon with his grandson Anthony. Our Dad was the kind of father who got up, showed up and didn’t give up when life said to stay down. He modeled a love for God, mother earth and all her creatures. He loved to tease the young and old alike. He was the man who you thought wasn’t paying attention all those years he spent long hours in the field. He became our source of positive childhood memories when our dear mother could no longer remember. He quietly took his place up front at the difficult times. The first half of his life he taught us how to work hard, the second half he learned how to play, to show love and affection, and to enjoy the hand he was given in life. Larry is survived by siblings Irene, Mae and Gerald; six children; 20 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Welcoming Larry home are siblings, Francis, Gert, Leona and Bill; his son, Tom; wife, Lillian; friends, Walt Willie and Viola Ignash; brother-in-law, Dick Angonese, and his canine friend Lucky. The family is indebted to Dr. Khan, whose care allowed Larry to have a longer and better quality of life; staff at Scheurer and Pontiac hospitals and Courtney Manor, for their compassionate care; and his daughter-in-law, Monica Ahearn who treated him as her own.
