Gloria Eleanor (Messing) Baker Armstrong
July 13, 1941 – February 21, 2017
Gloria Eleanor (Messing) Baker Armstrong, 75, of Lehigh Acres, Florida, and 
formerly of Bad Axe, Michigan, passed away February 21, 2017, (her mom's 
birthday) at Hope Hospice House in Lehigh Acres, Florida, after a brief 
illness.  Gloria was the daughter of Norman and Eleanor (Swartz) Messing of Bad 
Axe, born July 13, 1941, in Detroit.  She graduated from Bad Axe High School in 
1959 and then from St. Mary's Nursing School in 1962.  She married David J. 
Baker in Bad Axe in 1963.  He preceded her in death in 1981. She later married 
Donald Paul Armstrong of Bad Axe, in 1985.  He also preceded her in death on 
February 23, 2016.  Gloria was a registered nurse for over 38 years.  Her 
nursing experiences include labor and delivery, geriatric nursing, and home 
care nursing.  She was the Assistant Director of Nursing at the Huron Medical 
Care Facility in Bad Axe, and later specialized in home care all throughout Lee 
County in Southwest Florida.  She was passionate about nursing and loved 
helping people.  Gloria enjoyed scrapbooking, water aerobics, playing euchre, 
reading and studying the Bible and socializing with her friends.  She was a 
member of the First Baptist Church of Bad Axe for many years and recently Grace 
Bible Church in Fort Myers, Florida. 

Gloria is survived by her son, Michael Baker (Kim Hedger-Carey) of Alva, 
Florida; her daughter, Linda Baker Chumbler (Michael) of Harbor Springs; her 
step daughters, Linda Armstrong Severino (Jimmy) of Des Moines, Iowa, and 
Sharon Armstrong of Mayville; two grandchildren, Carson and Stella Chumbler; 
her brothers, Ken Messing (Mary) of Bad Axe, and Donald Messing (Diane) of 
Alma, Colorado; her sister, Jane Messing (Dan Rapson) of Andover, Kansas; and 
several nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her parents, Norman 
and Eleanor (Swartz) Messing and her brother, Dale Messing. 

Services will be at 11 a.m. on Monday, February 27, 2017, at the Bad Axe First 
Baptist Church.  Burial will be in Colfax Cemetery.  Visitation will be from 2 
to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Kaufman Funeral Home in Bad Axe and from 10 a.m. until 
the time of the service Monday at the church.  Memorials may be offered to the 
Hope Hospice House in Lehigh Acres, Florida or the Bad Axe First Baptist
