Raymond Carl Block
August 23, 1928 - September 21, 2011
Raymond Carl Block, 83, died Wednesday, September 21, 2011 at home after a 
courageous, five year battle with leukemia.  Ray was born August 23, 1928 in 
Minden City, a son of the late Rudolph and Sylvia Sadro Block.  Ray was a US 
Army veteran of the Korean Conflict and retired from Wix Corporation in 
Gastonia, NC.  Throughout his life he had a hard working ethic.  He was a member 
of St. Michaels Catholic Church,  in Gastonia, where he was an active member of 
the Knights of Columbus.  After moving to Wilmington, NC, he was a member, of 
Immaculate Conception Catholic Church.  Ray was a devoted husband, loving father 
and grandfather.  He and Rosemary felt that their children and grandchildren are 
treasures. 

Survivors of Mr. Block include his wife of 56 years, Rosemary Messing Block of 
Wilmington; sons and daughters-in-law, Roger and Janet Block of Rutland, VT., 
Timothy and Patricia Block of MD, Leslie “Chip” Block of Wilmington, NC, Paul 
and Diane Block of Gastonia, NC; daughters and sons-in-law, Lynn and Reggie 
McMillan of Gastonia, Barbara and Christopher Swan of Alexandria, VA.; fifteen 
grandchildren; brothers and sisters-in-law, Donald and Bobbie Block of 
Clarkston, MI, John and Marty Block of Lake Orion, MI.; sister and brother-in-
law, Beatrice and Bill Fenwick of Ada, MI; numerous in-laws, nieces and nephews.  
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by brothers and sisters-in-
law, Arnold “Bud” and Mary Block and Clarence and Faye Block. 

A rosary was held Sunday, September 25, 2011 in Founders Chapel of McLean 
Funeral Directors with Deacon Jack Weisenhom officiating.  A Mass of Christian 
Burial was held 9:00 a.m. on Monday, September 26, 2011 at St. Michaels Catholic 
Church with Abbot Placid Solari as celebrant.  The committal service was held on 
Monday at Forest Lawn West Cemetery, Charlotte, NC.  In lieu of flowers, 
memorials may be made to St. Michaels Catholic Church, 708 St. Michaels Lane, 
Gastonia, NC 28052 or Immaculate Conception Church, 6650 Carolina Beach Rd., 
Wilmington, NC 28412.  Condolences messages may be made online at
