Esther Catherine (Philippi) Booms 
August 7, 1926 – April 11, 2011


Mrs. Esther Catherine Booms, 84, of Harbor Beach, passed away Monday, April 11, 
2011 at Port Huron General Hospital of a short illness.  She was born August 7, 
1926 at home in Forestville, to the late Joseph and Anna (Herzel) Philippi.  
She married Melvin Michael Booms November 29, 1947 at St. John Chrysostom 
Catholic Church in Forestville.  He preceded her in death on January 26, 1989.
 
She was an eighth grade graduate of the Forestville Country School.  She was 
a “cookie” grandma for 22 years.  She was a parishioner at SS. Peter & Paul 
Catholic Church in Ruth for 64 years, where she was a Christian Mother.  She 
was in the monthly birthday club for Christian Mothers.  She was honored by 
being crowned as Mama Ruth Queen in 1997.  She was a member of the Daughters of 
Isabella Regina Fidelis Circle No. 608 and a member of the Michigan Milk 
Producers Association.  She enjoyed going to the local gathering place, the 
Ruth Convenience Store, on Wednesdays for coffee.  She also enjoyed gardening, 
flowers, watching birds and her special dog, Sable.

She is survived by 10 children, Catherine (Gary) Slater, Diane (Warren) Reidel, 
Joyce (James) Slater, and Marvin (Rose) Booms, all of Harbor Beach, Joseph 
Booms of Port Hope, Kevin (LuAnn) Booms of Jacksonville, Florida, Louise 
(Kevin) Hessling of Ubly, Sylvia (Joseph) Alent of Minden City, Philip (Kathy) 
Booms and Lois (Floyd) Tenbusch, both of Ruth; 22 grandchildren, Christopher 
(Becky) Slater, Darcy (Dan) Goniwicha, Mr. Carey (Esther) Slater, Tanya (Scott) 
McDonald, Trisha Slater, Melissa (Steve) Barnes, Tina (Mark) Moeller, Wendy 
(Michael) Romzek, Jason (Amy) Slater, Kent Booms, Abby G. Booms, Lucas J. 
Booms, Amy (Mark) Booms, Chad (Mary) Hessling, Jordan (Erin) Hessling, Nicole 
(Brian) Hessling-Essenmacher, Brent Alent, Maxx Alent, Kara Booms, Megan Booms, 
Jessica (Scott) Dalton, Travis Tenbusch and special friend, Sara; and 22 great-
grandchildren, and a great grandbaby on the way.  She is preceded in death by 
one infant daughter, Mary; two sisters, Henrietta Feury and Frances Philippi; 
and one brother, Paul Philippi.

The funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Friday, April 15, 2011 at SS. Peter & Paul 
Catholic Church in Ruth. The Rev. Peter Nwokoye, pastor of SS. Peter & Paul 
will officiate, with The Rev. Donald Eppenbrock co-concelebrating.  Burial will 
be in the church cemetery.   Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. Thursday at 
the Zinger-Smigielski Funeral Home in Ubly and from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at the 
church only.  There will be a joint rosary at 4 p.m. Thursday by the SSPP 
Christian Mothers and the Daughters of Isabella. There will be a parish vigil 
service at 7 p.m. Thursday. Both services will be at the funeral home.  
Memorials are requested to the family discretionary fund.
