Ubly To Observe Day of Mourning for Crash Victims
Ubly, Sept 7 – Final tributes will be paid Thurs to the three young men, who 
were killed Sun night in a plane crash near Cleveland as they were taking off on 
the return trip home after attending National Air Races. The deaths of the three 
men, Frank E Brooks, 26, Victor Jaroch, 26, and Harry D Ruthig, 24, shocked this 
community where they were active in civic and veterans affairs. Village resident 
Francis Hund said today that business places in Ubly will be closed all day 
Thurs when the funerals will be held as a mark of respect to their memory. The 
remains of the three men are in the Edward Zinger & Son funeral home. Funeral 
services for Brooks and Jaroch will be held at 9 a.m. Thurs in St John The 
Evangelist Cath ch, Rev Stanley A Kilar, pastor; Rev Joseph Dudek, Port Austin; 
Rev A A Kromka, Pigeon, and Rev H S Podsiad , Dwight, will officiate. Thumb 
Veterans Organization post No 1 will conduct military burial honors for Brooks 
in St Johns Cemetery in Ubly and for Jaroch in St Mary's cemetery in Dwight Twp. 
The remains of Ruthig will be removed at noon Thurs to the Methodist ch where 
funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Rev Sergei Moisejenko will officiate. 
The post will also conduct Military burial honors in Valley Cemetery where Ubly 
lodge No 284, F & A M will conduct Masonic burial ritual. Jaroch was chaplain 
and Ruthig finance officer of Thumb Veterans Organization post and both played 
on the Ubly baseball team. Ruthig was a steward of Ubly Masonic lodge. It was 
learned that Jaroch was at the controls of the plane at takeoff.
