He was born September 1, 1928 in Harbor Beach to William and Hazel (Hill) Brown. He married Evelyn Esther Konkel September 24, 1977 in Bad Axe. Orval served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War receiving his Parachute Badge and a Purple Heart. He held many jobs throughout his life beginning by picking up cream and eggs from Thumb farmers taking the eggs to Harbor Beach for candling and then transporting them to Detroit for sale. Orval had a milk route transporting milk cans to Ubly. He managed a gas station in Bad Axe before owning a salvage yard in Bad Axe which he owned for over 30 years. He was a truck driver for several years and then hauled gravel and did small backhoe jobs for a few years. He bought a second hand bread and produce store in Bad Axe which he ran for a short time. Orval then began focusing on his true love of training and working with horses. He began in Imlay City giving rides with his team of horses and wagon at the Bourbon Barrel Hunt Club. In 1983 he began providing wagon rides at Crossroad Village. In 1989 he began providing wagon rides on Mackinac Island. He did this for nearly 10 years after which he continued to train horses for teams to go to Mackinac Island until his retirement. Orval loved music and taught himself to play the guitar just in the last few years. He enjoyed playing cards especially Euchre, Pinochle and Solitaire. He was a member of the Caro VFW Post #4164. Orval is survived by his wife, Evelyn; children: Tony (Pam) Brown of Goodells, Verna (Harry) Booms of Harbor Beach; grandchildren: April (Mike) Hodgkin, Nichole Brown, Samantha (Bob) Clark, Holly (Liam) Walsh, Matthew Booms, Rebecca (Jared) Socia, Darryl (Jennifer) Booms, Katie Booms; great grandchildren: Curtlan, Zoe, Olivia, Essance, Anthony, Laylea, and Grace; sister, Thelma Belenski of Southgate; sister-in-law, Leona Brown; special niece, Cindy (Lane) Chapin of Marlette; many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by brothers: Robert Brown, Edgar Brown, Frederick Brown; sisters: Doris Sutton, Geraldine Koehn, Elvi Purdy; nephew, Rodney Brown. Funeral service held 10:00 a.m. Monday, March 19, 2012 in Kranz Funeral Home, Kingston with Deacon Barry Brown officiating. Interment is in Eastlawn Memorial Gardens in Saginaw. Pallbearers for Mr. Brown: Liam Walsh, Cody Chapin, John Sutton, Darryl Booms, Joe Wolschleger, Joe Belenski, and Gary Larson. Military honors under the direction of the U.S. Army and Caro VFW Post #4164. Memorials may be made to Kingston Fire and Rescue, United Hospice of Marlette or Kingston United Methodist Church.
