Chagnon April 30, 1873 - December 22, 1950 Port Austin, December 23 - Dr. Napoleon A. Chagnon, beloved "Family Doctor of the Tip of the Thumb," died Friday night in Bad Axe General Hospital after a brief illness. He was 76 years old. Dr. Chagnon was a patient jn the hospital two days. He was ill in recent weeks of heart disease. He was honored August 14 at "Dr. Chagnon Day," a community celebration in Port Austin in observance of 50 years of practice. The event included a parade and testimonial dinner, at which physicians, newspapermen and other friends paid tribute to him. The affair was arranged by the Chamber of Commerce. Born in Montreal, Dr. Chagnon was the youngest of a family of 14 children. All others were born in France. He was educated in Montreal schools and took his medical courses at McGill University and Montreal University. He began the practice of medicine in Neche, N. D., later moving to Fargo, N. D., where he remained 18 years. He served in the Medical Corps of the United States Army in World War I and was stationed at a government hospital in North Dakota. After the war, he practiced about two years in Detroit before coming 30 years ago to Port Austin. During the last three decades, he served as physician for hundreds of families at the tip of the Thumb. Dr. Chagnon is survived by his widow, Mary; six sons, Herman Chagnon, Gagetown; Gaston Chagnon, Saginaw, and John, Rollin, Verdun and Robert Chagnon, all of Port Austin; three daughters, Mrs. Venice Ornowski, Port Austin: Mrs. Lorraine Denczek, Port Huron, and Mrs. Justine Capser, Detroit; 21 grandchildren and a sister in Montreal. Funeral services will be held at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday in St. Michael's Catholic church. Rev. Joseph Dudek will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The remains are in the family home. Census records, marriage records his headstone and his WWII Draft Registration (b. April 30, 1874) shows his birth year ranging from 1864 to 1876, assuming he was actually born on April 30th as shown on his Draft Registration. Married Emma Cassette (1884-1942) in Cass County, N.D. Married Mary Leppek November 29, 1944 in Port Austin. 8-11-1891 Ontario census: shown as 22 years old making his birth year 1868 9-12-1918 WWI Draft Registration shows 44 years old & birth date of 4-30- 1874 6-18-1900 census shows he is 30 years old making his birth year 1870 5-5-1910 census shows he is 35 years old making his birth year 1875 1-17-1920 census shows he is 45 years old making his birth year 1876 4-2-1930 census shows he is 58 years old making his birth year 1871 4-10-1940 census shows he is 66 years old making his birth year 1873 Death Records show is birth date as 4-30-1873 11-29-1944 Marriage to Mary shows his age as 68 years old making his birth year 1876 His headstone shows his birth year as 1871 and according to his obituary he would have been born in 1874.
