All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/mi/mifiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Wayne Summers migenweb4@gmail.com March 11, 2024, 3:52 pm Unknown John T Champagne Killed in Korea, Sliding Log Kills Bad Axe Man In Korea - Bad Axe, June 27 - Cpl John T champagne, 21, son of Mr. & Mrs. Peter Champagne, was killed July 16 in Korea in an unusual accident, his parents were notified today by the Dept of Defense (the months are what the paper stated, however, more than likely he was killed on June 16) The telegram stated that Cpl Champagne suffered multiple internal, chest and abdominal injuries while clearing logs off a road. A log slide over the blade of a bulldozer, striking him. Born March 17, 1932, in Chandler Twp, he spent his entire life in Huron Co before entering the Army July 18, 1952. He went overseas in the spring of 1953. The fatal accident occurred with two days of the first anniversary of his entry in the army. Cpl Champagne is survived by his parents, six sisters, Mrs. Gordon Popham and Mrs. Clayton Parrish, both of Kinde; Mrs. Loretta Washevich, Midland; Mrs. Nelson Rau, Detroit; and Miss Helen champagne, Chicago, and 7 brothers, Virgil, Lee and Charles, all of Bad Axe; Russell, Lapeer; James, Filion; Cpl Peter A Champagne Jr, in Japan, and PFC Irvin Champagne, in Korea. Remains will be removed to Alden A MacAlpine funeral home from Korea. Additional Comments: Submitted to MIGenWeb archives 1998 Death likely was June 16th as newspaper is dated June 27.
