Thursday March 16, 2023 Oren Emerick June 20, 1937 - March 1, 2023 Oren E. Emerick, 85, St. Helen, died March 1, 2023, after a recent diagnosis of terminal lung cancer. Cremation has taken place by Sunset Valley Crematory. Visitation was held March 12 at Ramsey Funeral Home, Harbor Beach, with a blessing service that followed. A Celebration of Life was also held that day at Grindstone Port Hope Sportsman’s Club. Born June 20, 1937, in Port Hope, he was the son of Edwin and Margaruite (Maschke) Emerick. He had been married to Pauline Poink for 27 years and they raised seven children. For the past 13 years, he enjoyed love and happiness with Michelle Shivley. Early in his life, he worked various jobs in the Detroit area before returning to Huron County, where he worked as a part-time sheriff’s deputy and for Port Hope Community School as head of maintenance. After retiring from Port Hope Community School, he worked for Les Weiss Farms for an additional 20 years as a semi driver. He loved fishing and was the boat master of Port Hope Marina for many years. He was also an avid hunter, never missing an opening day until 2021. His home displayed many trophy mounts as well as photos of his hunting buddies and their adventurous memories. For many years, he played league pool and participated in card clubs. In later years, he traveled around Michigan camping with family. He loved riding his motorcycle and jeeping with his St. Helen friends. He was a member of Fraternal Order of Eagles 3646, West Branch, and Grindstone Port Hope Sportsman’s Club. He loved to chit chat and was known for striking up a conversation with anyone, making friends easily. He was notorious with those who knew him for telling a good story and never letting the truth get in the way of a good one. To those who knew him, he had a heart of gold and wore it on his sleeve. Preceding him in death were his children, Jeffrey, Dinah and Bethany; granddaughter, Jodie; great-grandson, Donavin; an infant brother; sister, Gloria and her husband, Cleo Teschendorf; nephew, Dean Teschendorf; and mother of his children, Pauline Ginther. Surviving are his special friend, Michelle Shivley of St. Helen; dog, Griffin; children, Matthew Emerick of West Branch, Neal (Colleen) Emerick of Apache Junction, Arizona, Holly Emerick of Bad Axe and Paula Emerick of Portland, Oregon; daughter-in-law, Brenda Emerick of Bad Axe; son-in-law, William Bailey III of Port Hope; 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; brother, Terry (Peggy) Emerick of Port Hope; and many nieces and nephews. Mr. Emerick’s family would like to thank Compassus Hospice for the care provided to him.
