He was born on April 24, 1931 in Harbor Beach, to the late Peter and Anastasia (Peyerk) Goniwicha. Leonard and Dolores Murawski were united in marriage on June 25, 1955. She preceded him in death on June 23, 2016. Leonard retired from the Operating Engineers Union after 45 years of service. He was a member of Our Lady of Lake Huron Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus where he served as Grand Knight, the Harbor Beach Lions Club, and founder and President of the Rapson Sportsmen Club. He was an avid hunter, self-proclaimed chef of “polish soul food”, skilled wood craftsman, and well known for his Michigan coin clocks. His avid gardening skills and love of farming showed in his fresh vegetables that were shared and enjoyed by many in the community. He is survived by his children: Cynthia Goniewicha of Harbor Beach, Brenda (Mike) Vacekonis of Evans, Georgia, Vicky (Dennis) Kozfkay of Parisville, Colleen Goniewicha of Harbor Beach, Donna (Tony) Lempert of Commerce Township, his grandchildren: Stacey Vacekonis, Richard Vacekonis, Jessica Dahlman, Meagan Kozfkay, Jarred Long, Brandon Long, Logan Lempert and Kaitlyn Lempert. Siblings: Eileen Thrushman of Port Austin, Shirley Young of Warren, Gerald Goniwicha of Roscommon, and Sandy Goniwicha of Warren. Leonard was preceded in death by his siblings: Leo Goniwicha, Doris Gwisdalla, Dorlene Talaski and Peter Goniwicha Jr., and a grandson Ross Vacekonis. Funeral Mass for Leonard will be Wednesay, August 8, 2018 at 12pm, at Our Lady of Lake Huron Catholic Church, of the Holy Name of Mary Parish, with Fr. George Amos officiating. Burial will follow in the OLLH Church Cemetery. Visitation for Leonard will be at the church beginning at 10am until time of services at 12 noon. Arrangements are being handled by the Ramsey Funeral Home of Harbor Beach.
