John A Graham
Former Huron county Sheriff, John A Graham, 54, Bad Axe was found dead today 
(Friday) on Barrie road, two miles SW of Bad Axe. He was found lying on the side 
of the road with a shot gun clutched in his arms. Mailman Bill Slack saw the 
body laying on the side of the road when he drove by about 1 p.m. Graham's car 
was parked near where he lay. Coroner James Colgan investigated along with the 
Huron county Sheriff's Dept and the Bad Axe State Police. He ruled the death 
suicide. Authorities said that he had been despondent in recent weeks. Graham 
served as Huron County Sheriff for 10 years and six months until he was defeated 
on a recount in Oct 1942 by 37 votes by Merritt R McBride. Before that he was in 
the contracting business. He was elected as a member of the Bad Axe city council 
in April 1954 and was still serving on that body. After he was defeated for re-
election in 1942 he served with the 6th service Command of the U S Army in 
Detroit. In Feb 1944 he purchased the Bad Axe Marble and Granite Works and sold 
the business last fall to Robert Badgley and bought the Meagher Farm Service in 
Kinde.
