Hessling, 83, of Sherman Township near Helena, passed away Friday, November 17, 2000, in Courtney Manor in Bad Axe. Elmer was born on March 30, 1917, in Sherman Township, son of the late Henry and Adelaide (Terbrack) Hessling. He married Leona Geiger on August 6, 1941, in St. Anthony's Church in Helena, and together they farmed in Sherman Township. She preceded him in death on June 2, 1975. He also married Ernestine Wolschlager Volmering on May 16, 1992, in Helena, and she preceded him in death on July 2, 1999. Elmer was an active member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church, being on the parish council and helping to build the school. He was a member of the Men's Club and was an usher. He was also an active member of the Township, having been a former Sherman Township Supervisor and Treasurer. He also measured wheat for the ASCS office, and he was a former employee of the Booms Silo Co. He enjoyed farming, gardening, hunting and fishing and a good game of cards. Surviving are his children, Austin Hessling and his wife, Jean, of Caro; Donna Klama and her husband, Cass, of Parisville; Richard Hessling and his wife, Nancy, of Harbor Beach; Warren Hessling and his wife, Sharon; of Sterling Heights, Mark Hessling of China Township; James Hessling and his wife, Charlotte, of Parisville; Kevin Hessling and his wife, Louise, of Harbor Beach; Bridget Brown and her husband, Doug, of Lexington, Kentucky; and Steve Hessling of Beacon, New York; 21 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Florence Booms of Bad Axe and Kathleen Peruski of Ruth; many nieces and nephews. Elmer was preceded in death by two sisters, Lucille Learman and infant Florence Hessling; and a grandson, Eric Hessling. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, November 21, 2000, at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Helena with the Rev. Charlie Hammond, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
