Lackowski, 69, of Bad Axe, the former owner of the Verona Tavern in Verona Township, died Tuesday, May 19, 1992, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Milwaukee, Wisconsin after a long illness. He was born December 11, 1922, in Harbor Beach, son of the late Frank and Julia (Kucharczyk) Lackowski. He married Edwina Smaglinski on October, 16, 1948, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Parisville. He was a graduate of Filmore Rural School and served in the U.S. Army during World War in India and Burma. Mr. Lackowski worked in Port Huron and Harbor Beach before purchasing the Verona Tavern. He sold it in 1990 after 38 years. He was a life member of the Parisville Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5740, and a parishioner at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Rapson for 35 years. Mr. Lackowski was also a member of the Michigan Licensed Beverage Association for the past 40 years. Surviving are his wife, Edwina “Edna" of Bad Axe; three sons, Dennis and his wife Susan of Harbor Beach, Jerome and his wife Debra of Bad Axe, Steven and his wife Denise of Bad Axe; three daughters, Barbara, Judith and Mrs. James (Cynthia) Miller, all of Bad Axe; five grandchildren’ six sisters, Mrs. George (Selma) Geiger of Harbor Beach Mrs. Ernest (Virginia) Watchowski of Bad Axe, Mrs. Elmer (Evelyn) Peyrek of Filion, Mrs. Chris (Sylvia) Bactolotta of Roseville, Mrs. Robert (Frances) Becking of Bad Axe, Teresa Puvalowski of East Detroit; three brothers, Ervin and his wife Jeanette of Warren, Richard and his wife Lottie of Roseville, Franklin “Hank" and his wife Shirley of Mount Clemens. Mr. Lackowski was preceded in death by three brothers, Raymond, Casimer and Walter; and one sister, Rose Collins. Funeral services were 10:00 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Rapson. The Rev. John Cotter, pastor, officiated. Graveside military services were provided by the Parisville VFW Post 5740 at the church cemetery. Arrangements were made by the Zinger-Smigielski Funeral Home of Ubly.
