Clarence Ervin Leppek January 27, 1927 – August 21, 2009 Loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and uncle, Clarence E. Leppek passed away peacefully in his sleep after a brave and valiant battle with kidney disease at St. Joseph Hospital in Eureka, California on August 21, 2009. Our family takes great comfort in knowing that his pain is gone and he is with our Lord and Savior, Jesus. Clarence was born on January 27, 1927 in Ruth, Michigan, one of 9 children raised on the family farm. One of his many joys was sharing the skills he learned on the farm with his children and grandchildren. He loved the soil and never had a home without a garden. Clarence joined the Navy at only 17, in 1944 and served at the Arcata Airport base for two years. It was in Arcata that he met his wife of 64 years, Mary Matteoli. Many will remember Clarence as their postman, (Clarence was one of the first postmen to start home delivery in the Arcata area) or businessman (the Sweet Shop and Reidmiller/Leppek Restaurant Supply), but most will remember Clarence the contractor. In 1965, he began building homes in the Eureka and surrounding area. He was one of the premier builders of the time in the Eureka area. Clarence passed down his skills and his business to his sons who have followed in his footsteps. He had so much joy in working with his sons, even from his scooter chair when he was no longer able to walk. His greatest joy was so deeply loving and caring for his wife and family, and he never faltered. He passed in peace, knowing all was well. Clarence attended College of the Pacific in Hawaii, as well as the Eureka Business College where he received a degree in Public Accounting in 1949. Clarence was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Sons of Italy, and the Sacred Heart Church. He was the treasurer of the local Sons of Italy, and on the finance committee of Sacred Heart. He was instrumental in rebuilding the alter area at Sacred Heart. He is survived by his wife Mary, sons Dan and wife Nancy, Chris and wife Renee, Joe and wife Trudy, and his daughters Sherry and husband Jon Dunn, Jo Anna and husband Kevin Davis, and his grandchildren Duane Nason and wife Suzanna, Kadin, Trevor, Ashley and Tayelor Leppek, Justin and Jennifer Leppek, Matt Conley and wife Michelle, Tyler, and Josh Conley, Laura Davis, Carl Davis and wife April, Diana Cabral and husband Jon, and his great-grandchildren, Luke, Noah, Devyn, Madelyn and Myla. Clarence is also survived by his beloved nieces and nephews and their families: Richard and Rhonda Matteoli, Mark and Jeanette Matteoli, Merijean and Kerry Glavich, Gina and Richard Bartlett. Special thanks go to Clarence’s caregivers at the Fresenius Dialysis Center, especially Jessica and Dr. Alan Mathew, as well as the wonderful staff at St. Joseph Hospital. Viewing will be at Sanders Funeral Home on Monday, August 24th from 1:00 - 6:00 pm and the rosary will follow at Sanders Funeral Home at 7 pm. Memorial services will be held on Tuesday, August 25th at 10:00 am at Sacred Heart Church, Eureka. A gathering of good thoughts and memories for all friends and family will be held following the service at Clarence’s home at 1915 Huntoon Ln, Eureka, near Zane Jr. High School.
