Mr. Lawrence B. Messing, 81, of Ruth died Friday, May 11, 2001, at Courtney 
Manor of Bad Axe.  He was born July 8, 1919, in Ruth, son of the late Henry 
and Helen (Tenbusch) Messing. He married Margaret Ulfig on November 30, 1940, 
at St. Mary Catholic Church of Parisville.  She preceded him in death on July 
23, 1978.  He attended SS. Peter and Paul Elementary School.  He farmed with 
his dad.  He worked at Hercules for 34 years and retired in 1981. He was a 
member of the Ruth Knights of Columbus Council #3823 and a lifelong 
parishioner of SS. Peter and Paul Church of Ruth.  He enjoyed playing cards 
and visiting with his family and friends.  

He is survived by three daughters, Lorraine Wolschlager and her husband, 
Melvin, of Bad Axe, Linda Shaheen and her husband, Gulrez, of Germany, and 
Sharon Osak and her husband, Jerry, of Ida; three sons, Gary Messing and his 
wife, Marsha, of Sterling Heights, Linus Messing of Houghton Lake, and 
Clifford Messing and his wife, Rose, of Lake Orion; 16 grandchildren; 15 great-
grandchildren; two brothers, Leonard Messing and his wife, Theresa, of Harbor 
Beach and Andrew Messing of Bad Axe; four sisters, Anna Essenmacher of Bad 
Axe,  Magdeline Kranz of Bad Axe, Dorothy Roggenbuck of Harbor Beach, and 
Eleanor Adler and her husband, John, of Ruth.  He was preceded in death by 
three brothers, Leo, Walter, and Arthur; three sisters, Helen Kirsch, Clara 
Clor, and Irene Samulski; infant daughter, Helen; and a grandson, Bruce 
Messing in 1999.  

Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, May 15, 2001, at SS. 
Peter and Paul Catholic Church of Ruth. The Rev. Steve Gavit, pastor, will 
officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery.  There will be a rosary by 
the Ruth Knights of Columbus tonight at 8 p.m. and a parish wake service at 8 
p.m. Monday. Both services will be at the Zinger-Smigielski Funeral Home in 
Ubly.  Visitation will be from 7 to 9:30 p.m. tonight, 1 to 9:30 p.m. Monday 
and from 9 to 10 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
