Patrick Charles Messing was born March 17th, 1943 in Minden City, Michigan to Elmer and Alma Messing (deceased). Raised on a robust and hard working family farm with his 15 brothers and sisters, he attended Saints Peter and Paul school (SSPP) in Ruth, Michigan and graduated high school in 1962. At SSPP he was a center on the basketball team and spoke with pride about the team's entry into the state tournament throughout his life. After high school he attended The Order of the Precious Blood Seminary in Ohio. During his time at the seminary, he met his future wife Maryann while in the hospital following a football injury. She was his RN, and they corresponded as pen pals until his departure from the seminary. They married on June 21st, 1969. Together they had 11 children, and over 46 years of marriage embodied the spirit of God's love in their support for each other, their fortitude, and their love of family and friends. Patrick lived his life with focus and dedication to his faith and family. He enjoyed working outside, gardening, playing cards and euchre, bowling, conversing, eating, dancing, and laughing. The love he carried for his family was displayed by the endless energy and enthusiasm he brought to countless family gatherings, including Baptisms, Christmases, Graduations, Birthdays, and Weddings. He loved to tell of his gardening prowess, which was remarkable. He was readily willing to listen and able to provide wisdom to so many who knew him. He loved a good meal, especially a chicken dinner. He truly possessed a love of life, and his infectious enthusiasm was embraced by all who met him. He was the biggest fan and supporter for each of his children and grandchildren. His kindness, faith, and open hearted nature was a joy to take part in for everyone he met. Patrick worked as a laborer for Chrysler Corporation for 39 years. He retired May 31st, 2007. During that time, he built many lasting friendships that remain today. Patrick was a proud member at The National Shrine of the Little Flower Church. He served in the church for many years in many ways, including as a member of the choir, usher, and eucharistic minister. During his retirement he was exceptionally proud to be a member of the Resurrection choir. The community at the Shrine was a great source of support for him throughout his life, but especially following his wife Maryann's passing in 2015. Patrick was father to eleven children, son Michael (Kristen), daughter Christine "Tina" Griessel (Kevin), son Keith, son Joseph (Charouay), son Timothy (Katie), daughter Patricia Greco (Chris), daughter Therese Eason (Tom), daughter Rebecca, son Mark (Laura), daughter Monica Brennan (Xach), and daughter Jessica.
