Jean was born April 26, 1935 in Bad Axe, Michigan and grew up on a family farm near there. She was the youngest of eight siblings. She had a quiet demeanor and went with the flow of life. She met her husband LeRoy Messing, who swept her off her feet and took her on the adventure of a lifetime. After wedding in November 1953, LeRoy and Jean quickly started a family on their small farm in Charleston, Michigan. In 1965, after birthing eight children (only the first two in the hospital), they picked up and moved to the Last Frontier, Alaska, away from the familiar to a land of great possibilities. Jean birthed five more children in Juneau making for a "Baker's Dozen" totaling 13 children. Jean always trusted in the Lord Jesus that she would make it through any adversity she faced. She was a loving, nurturing mother who was fully committed to her family. She was a stay-at-home mom until later in life when she began working outside the home at Fred Meyer bakery and later retired as a State of Alaska employee from the Division of Investments. She also volunteered her time at the local St Vincent de Paul; some of which was as a board member. Jean was preceded in death by her beloved husband, LeRoy; her parents Thomas and Josephine Murray and six older siblings; Clements, Grace, Marjorie (Abraham), Harold, John, and Raymond. Jean was also preceded in death by her granddaughter Geolanda (Whiteley) Schmidt, grandson Stanwood Whiteley, son-in-law George Whiteley, Sr; infant twin grandson Timothy and granddaughter Kimberly Messing, great granddaughter Geneva Harris and daughter-in-law Kathleen (O'Rourke) Messing. Jean is survived by her sister Phyllis Roggenbuck who lives in Michigan, as well as numerous nieces and nephews across the United States. Jean is also survived by all of her 13 children. Those living in Juneau, Alaska are Stephen, Deanna (Chris) Lewis, Linda Whiteley, Kevin (Angie Parker), Martin (Kathy), Brian (Marie), Jennifer Rodriguez, Jason (Doniece Gott), and Celeste (Brian) Walker. Her children living outside Juneau are Michael (Shelley) Messing of Bellingham, Washington; Sharon (Al) Jones of Waterbury, Vermont; Terese (Chris) Rummell of Salem, Oregon, and Matthew (Kristin) Messing of Clackamas, Oregon. A mass will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, July 24, 2021, at St Paul's Catholic Church and will be immediately followed by a Celebration of Life with light refreshments at the church hall. Jean will be interred with her husband LeRoy at the Shrine of St Therese at approximately 4:00 PM.
