Richard Arthur Messing  
April 11, 1938 - June 8, 2025
RICHARD ARTHUR MESSING, 87, of Ruth, passed away on Sunday, June 8, 2025.  He 
was born on April 11, 1938 in Harbor Beach, son of the late Bernard and Rosaline 
(Booms) Messing.  He married Ida Mae Terbrack on November 23, 1963, at Sts. 
Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Ruth, Michigan.  Richard served in the United 
States Army in the 1960’s.  Upon returning home, he worked for his Uncle Roman 
at Booms Construction for 30 plus years as a painter and carpenter, then he 
finished out his career at Axley Tool.  Richard was a faithful parishioner of 
Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Ruth.  He served as a Volunteer Fireman for 
Sherman Twp in Ruth for 47 plus years retiring in 2015.  Richard had a passion 
for polka dances where he met his future wife.  He also enjoyed reading Western 
novels from cover to cover.  Richard was an avid sportsman.  He got his prize 
6×6 elk in upper Michigan with his nephew in 2008.  Richard never missed a year 
up North at deer camp, and he even went charter fishing with the Veterans on his 
last Saturday with us.

Richard is survived by his wife of 61 years, Ida Mae Messing of Ruth, Michigan; 
his two daughters, Marsha (Eric) Messing-Calhoun and Lisa (Kevin) Braun; his two 
brothers, Thomas (Judy) Messing and Michael (Joyce) Messing. He was preceded in 
death by his brother, Fred (Audrey) Messing.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Saturday, June 14, 2025 at 11 a.m. at 
Holy Apostles Parish – Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Ruth.  Burial was 
in the church cemetery.  Visitation was held on Friday, June 13, 2025 from 3 -7 
p.m. at the Kaufman Funeral Home in Bad Axe and Saturday at the church from 10 
a.m. until the service time at 11 a.m.  A scripture service was offered on 
Friday at 7 p.m. at the funeral home.  In lieu of flowers, you may leave a 
donation for the family to help defray funeral costs.  Published Huron County
