Gert was born Oct. 25, 1915 in Parisville to the late Theophil and Mary (Mandelski) Spitza. She married Isadore "Pete" O'Parka on October 19, 1932 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Parisville. He preceded her in death on September 21, 1999. Gert was a graduate of a country school. She worked at the Ruth Creamery and was a barmaid for many years at different taverns in the area. She worked with her husband in Gert's Catering for many years. She was a member of the Daughters of Isabella Fidelis Regina Circle #608, St. John Christian Mothers Circle 1, St. Anne's, and St. Mary Rosary Sodality. She was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie # 3690 of Caseville, where she was a former chaplin. She was a former parishioner at St. Mary Catholic Church in Parisville, and has been a parishioner at St. John Catholic Church in Ubly since 1955. Gert is survived by five daughters, Rose Allen, of Ubly, Theresa Stomack and her husband, Clarence, of Minden City, Susan Krug and her husband, Robert, of Ubly, Arlene Schmidt and her husband, Al, of Bay City, and Julie Muentener, of Port Austin; one sister, Joann Piot, of Hazel Park; 23 grandchildren; 52 great-grandchildren; and four great- great- grandchildren. Gert was preceded in death by two grandsons, Dean Hammerle and Todd Allen; four sons-in-law, Willard "Bill" Allen, Clarence Kubacki, Robert Smeader, and Jerry Muentener, Jr.; three sisters, Balbina Klama, Bertha Osantowski, and Minnie O'Parka; and one brother-in-law, Frank Piot. A Funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. on Monday, October 11, 2004, at St. John Catholic Church in Ubly. The Rev. Steve Gavit, pastor of Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Ruth, will officiate. Burial will be in St. John Cemetery. Friends may call from 1 to 9 p.m. on Sunday and from 9 to 10 a.m. on Monday at the Zinger-Smigielski Funeral Home in Ubly. There will be a joint rosary at 3 p.m. on Sunday by the St. John Christian Mothers and the Daughters of Isabella. There will be a parish vigil service at 7:30 on Sunday. All services will be at the funeral home.
