Rita A. (Hessling) Ostrander
January 27, 1937 – December 10, 2013
Rita A. Ostrander, 76, of Omer, Michigan, passed away Tuesday, December 10, 
2013 with her loving husband, children and grandchildren surrounding her at 
home.  Rita was born in Ruth, Michigan on January 27, 1937, the daughter of 
Mary (Emming) and Charles Hessling. She married Robert Ostrander on November 7, 
1959, and together the couple raised four children, Jacqueline, Robert, Jr., 
Darlene and Marlene.  Rita was a homemaker, while raising the family.  When the 
children were old enough to take care of themselves, Rita took a job as a baker 
at the former Lutz’s Bakery in Au Gres, Michigan.  She later became employed as 
a caregiver for Foco House, of Standish, Michigan, which is where she retired.  
Rita was also active on the family farm in Twining, where she worked side-by-
side her husband of 54 years, Bob, tending to their beef cattle and planting 
and harvesting crops.  During her downtime, Rita loved baking, cooking meals 
for her children and loving on the grandchildren even during her time of 
illness.  Rita was a wonderful mother and best friend to her children, but also 
a loving grandmother who checked on her grandchildren constantly to see how 
their days were going.

Besides her adoring husband, Bob, Rita is survived by her children, Jacqueline 
(Donald) Lee, of Au Gres, Robert Jr. (Lisa) Ostrander, of Twining, and Darlene 
(Martin) Gayeski II, of Oscoda; siblings, Margaret Volmering, of Bad Axe, 
Michigan, Angeline Burkhard of Bad Axe, Rose Sherman, of Warren, Audrey 
(Kenneth) Wolschlager, of Bad Axe, Beatrice (Dan) Geigar, of Bad Axe, Charles 
(Janet) Hessling, of Port Austin, Michigan, and Margaret Hessling, of Redford 
Township, Michigan; nine grandchildren, Jenille (Kris) Kent, Scott (Courtney) 
Lee, Travis Lee, Crystal Ostrander, Jessica Ostrander, Makayla Ostrander, Shane 
(Ashley) Vorhes, Hunter Gayeski and Devin Corey; three great-grandchildren, 
Zaydin Kent, Jaxson Vorhes, and Reese Webster; son-in-law, Michael Corey, of Au 
Gres; sister-in-law, Arlene Jarabek, of Saginaw, Mich.; brother-in-law, Richard 
(June) Ostrander, of Twining.

She was preceded in death by her daugher, Marlene Corey; sisters and brothers-
in-law, Elizabeth (Al) Landra and Theresa (Victor) Durand; brother, Clarence 
Hessling; brothers-in-law, Harley Burkhard, Benjamin Jarabek, and Merl 
Ostrander; sisters-in-law, Shirley Ostrander and Marjorie (Jack) King; and many 
nieces and nephews.

Visitation for Mrs. Ostrander will be held from 2-8 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 12 at 
C.L. Forshee & Sons Funeral Homes, Inc., Au Gres Chapel. Mrs. Ostrander will 
lie in state at St. Mark Catholic Church, Au Gres, from 10-11 a.m., Friday, 
Dec. 13 with services following at 11 a.m. Father Edward Konieczka will 
officiate with interment following in Cedar Valley Cemetery, Twining, 
Michigan.  In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Hospice of Helping 
Hands, 322 W. Houghton Ave., West Branch, Mich. 48661.  Notification Published
