Peruski of Bad Axe was killed and another woman was injured, stated Huron County Sheriff Kelly J. Hanson in a press release. Peruski was walking along M-53 at 2:30 a.m. with Cassandra R. Herron, 21, of Harbor Beach, who was seriously injured. A third pedestrian, 41-year-old Christopher M. Harder was uninjured. The three were walking on M-53 toward Thompson Road when the two women were struck about 600 feet west of the intersection, Hanson added. "From statements Mr. Harder made, it's believed the trio had set out to stargaze from a nearby residence where Ms. Peruski was residing. It's also appearing alcohol played a role with the three," Hanson reported. The vehicle suspected to have struck the women was reported to Huron Central Dispatch at 6:40 a.m. Friday. The Mercury Mountaineer was parked on Munford Road, near M-19, in Bingham Township when the call came. The suspect, a 21-year-old Bad Axe man, was the sole occupant, and was sitting in the back seat. "The Mercury Mountaineer SUV was then impounded and the driver was taken to the Huron Medical Center for a requested blood test," Hanson stated. "He eventually was arrested and lodged in our jail on felony-related charges for leaving that accident scene which caused death. There is no bond at this time." He is expected to be arraigned Friday and there is currently no bond. Harder, who was walking some distance behind Peruski and Herron, reported that a light- colored SUV eastbound camp up from behind and impacted with the women. Peruski was pronounced dead at the scene. Herron was taken to Huron Medical Center and later flown to an out-of-county hospital, Hanson said. Harder was arrested at the scene on an outstanding warrant and lodged in the Huron County jail. The Huron County Medical Examiners Office, the Bad Axe Police Department, Bad Axe Fire Department and Central Huron Ambulance assisted Huron County Sheriff's deputies at the scene. An autopsy is being scheduled.
