Pionk September 8, 1930 – January 13, 2005 Archie A. Pionk, 74, of Ubly, passed away Thursday, January 13, 2005, at his residence under hospice care. He was born September 8, 1930 in Smith Corners to the late John and Frances (Gosdzinski) Pionk. He married Marie Evelyn Shemka on May 1, 1954 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Parisville. Archie attended the Kelly Country School. In his younger days, he was an accomplished baseball/softball player. He was a drummer for 20 years with the band "The Polka Chips". He retired in 1997 after 43 years as a machine repairman for Active Industries. He was a parishioner at St. John Catholic Church in Ubly for 45 years. Archie enjoyed woodworking, rug weaving, gardening, and playing his accordion for his family. He also was an avid hunter. Archie is survived by his wife, Marie, of Ubly; two sons, Marvin Pionk and his wife, Barbara, of Bad Axe, Michael Pionk and his wife, Donna, of Hermitage, Tennessee; five grandchildren, Matthew and Kimberly Pionk, of Bad Axe, Hayley, Luke, and Julia Pionk, of Hermitage, Tennessee; two sisters, Susie Peruski and Rose Lemanski, both of Bad Axe; one brother, James Pionk, of Bad Axe; three sisters-in-law, Beatrice Osantoski and her husband, Martin, of Bad Axe, Louise Pionk, of Ubly, Jeanette Lemanski, of Madison Heights; and one brother-in-law, LaVerne Shemka and his wife, Mary, of Port Hope. Archie was preceded in death by three sisters, Lucy Osentoski, Anna Susalla, and Selma Grifka; and six brothers, Stanley, Sylvester, John, Clarence, Elmer, and Ignatz Pionk. A Funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, January 15, 2005, at St. John Catholic Church in Ubly. The Rev. Joseph Griffin, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery in the spring. Visitation will be from 1:30 to 9 p.m. today at Zinger-Smigielski Funeral Home in Ubly, from 10 to 11 a.m. on Saturday at the church only. There will be a parish vigil service at 7:30 p.m. today at the funeral home. Memorials are requested to Heartland Hospice.
