Virginia Phyllis Rutkowski November 5, 1934 - July 6, 1951 Injuries Fatal To Sanilac Girl Virginia Rutkowski Is Traffic Victim Ubly, July 7 - Virginia Rutkowski, 16, oldest child of Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Rutkowski, Austin Township, Sanilac County, died Friday afternoon in Hubbard Memorial Hospital, Bad Axe, of injuries suffered June 30 in an automobile accident. Virginia was the sixth traffic fatality of 1951 in Huron County. The accident occurred when an automobile, driven by Sylvester Knoblock, 20, Detroit, formerly of Port Austin, crashed on a curve on Parisville road. Virginia's sister, Shirley, 15, is in the hospital with a fractured pelvis suffered in the same accident. Knoblock's father, Felix, then 41, was fatally injured Aug. 4, 1941, in an automobile accident on M-53 near Kinde. Virginia is survived by her parents, a brother, Richard, eight sisters, Shirley. Marlene, Rita, Ilene, Betty, Kathleen, and grandparents, Frank Osentoski, Tyre, and Mrs. Frank Zulka, Minden City. She was born November 5, 1934, in Paris Township, Huron County. The family lived the last 13 years in Austin Township. Virginia was a Junior in Ubly High School. Funeral services will be held at 9:30 a.m. Monday in St. John The Evangelist, Catholic church. Rev. Stanley A. Kilar will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Remains are in Edward Zinger and Son funeral home, Ubly, where Father Kilar will conduct Rosary devotions at 8 p.m. Sunday. Published Times Herald (Port Huron, Michigan) July 7, 1951 SISTERLY AFFECTION almost beyond measure was demonstrated by Virginia Rutkowski, 16-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Rutkowski, Austin Township, Sanilac County, after the automobile accident, in which she and her sister, Shirley, 15, were injured. Both girls were thrown from the automobile when it crashed on a curve on Parisville road the night of June 30. When ambulance attendants reached the scene, Virginia told them "Take care of my sister first. She is hurt worse than I am." It is sad to report that, although both sisters were injured seriously with fractured pelvises, Virginia actually was the more critically hurt. She died six days later. Shirley is recovering. Certainly, there must be a special place in Heaven today for the girl whose first thought in a time of great stress and pain was of her sister. A pathetic aftermath of the tragedy occurred Monday when Virginia's grandfather, Frank Osentoski, 75, retired farmer, overcome by grief at her death, was stricken by heart disease on the way to the funeral. He died a few minutes later. Mr. Osentoski was particularly close to Virginia and her brothers and sisters as he lived with their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Rutkowski, since the death last January of his wife. Another sad coincidence is that Mr. Osentoski died the day after his seventy-fifth birthday. Published Times Herald (Port Huron, Michigan) Sunday July 15, 1951. A Huron County Circuit Court jury of 10 men and a woman returned a verdict of no cause for action at 10:30 p.m. Friday in the case of Stanley Rutkowski, Ubly, against Sylvester and Lewis Knoblock, brothers, of Kinde. The case was based on an automobile accident June 30, 1951 on a curve on North Parisville road in which Virginia Rutkowski, 16, a daughter of Rutkowski, was fatally injured. Sylvester Knoblock was driver of the automobile, owned by Lewis Knoblock. The jury deliberated about five hours in reaching its decision. The case was tried by 11 jurors after the twelfth juror was excused by consent of both sides because of a death in his family. Rutkowski asked reimbursement of $1,225 for hospital, doctor, nurse and funeral expenses, loss of services and pain and suffering. Judge Timothy C. Quinn, Caro, ruled out loss of services as too indefinite. Ray H. Benedict. Sandusky, attorney for Rutkowski, set $5,000, as a request for pain and suffering. Defense Attorneys Herbert Devine, Flint, and Thomas M. McAllister. Bad Axe, contended Sylvester Knoblock was not guilty of gross negligence as required under the guest passenger act for the plaintiff to recover.
