James Simon Schmidt April 3, 1934 - April 29, 2023 James (Jim) Simon Schmidt, 89, of Ubly, Michigan, passed away peacefully at home on April 29th, 2023, after a prolonged illness. Jim was born April 3, 1934, to the late John P. and Frances (Helewski) Schmitt at Smitts Corners, Ubly. He grew up on the family farm near Smitts Corners and was one of 10 children. He was a Merchant Marine from 1954 -1957, sailing the Great Lakes on the freighters the Verona and the Georgia. When Jim returned to Huron County, he met and then married Irene Salowitz on August 2, 1958, at St. John's Catholic Church in Ubly. He owned and operated a cement tiling business until 1965 and laid cement tile for many farmers around Huron County. They settled near Ubly in a house Jim constructed, where they lived for more than 60 years. Jim retired from the Huron County Road Commission as Shop Foreman of Ruggles Garage in Bad Axe after 32 years of employment. He excelled at all his duties with the Road Commission and proved to be highly indispensable as a foreman, surveyor, and chief mechanic, in bridge maintenance, demolition, County Park maintenance, as well as several other duties. Jim was also an expert welder and blacksmith, repairing farm equipment for many of the local farmers. In his spare time, Jim enjoyed carpentry and woodworking. He was a devoted son, loyal husband, and loving father and grandfather. Jim is survived by his daughters: Linda Schmidt and Caroline (Schmidt) Gornowicz; two grandchildren: Kristyna (and Thomas) Robinson and Alyssa Gornowicz; three great-grandchildren: Ryan, Maddison, and Evelyne Robinson; many in-laws, nieces, nephews, and other extended family. Jim was preceded in death by his wife, Irene, two infant sons and two infant daughters, his twin brother, Gerald Schmitt, and six brothers and two sisters. Jim will be greatly missed by his family, extended family, and friends. The family wishes to thank the staff of Americans Home Health & Hospice Care of Saginaw and Health Care at Home of Cass City for the care and support they provided Jim over the last year and a half. Memorial donations may be made to Americans Home Health & Hospice Care or Health Care at Home. A Memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 13, 2023 at 11 am at the Kaufman Funeral Home in Bad Axe. The family will receive guests for visitation on Saturday from 10 am until the service time at 11 am. Interment will be Most Holy Trinity Cemetery at Schmitt’s Corners, Ubly.
