Melvin Girard Schumacher January 8, 1926 - September 29, 1997 MELVIN (SPUD) SCHUMACHER - Melvin G. Schumacher, 71, of Kinde, died Monday, September 29, 1997 at his home after a six month illness with cancer. He was born January 8, 1926 in Ruth, son of the late Anthony and Julia (Glaza) Schumacher. He and Mary Ann Martin were married on October 25, 1947 at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Ruth. Melvin graduated from Minden City High School. He was a World War II Veteran serving in the United States Navy. After his discharge from the Navy, he was employed by the Minden City Lumber Company. He moved to Kinde where he was co-owner and manager of Lincoln Lumber Company from 1958 until 1961. In 1961 he began working for the Huron News in Bad Axe. He was employed at Saginaw Steering Gear in Saginaw from 1966 until his retirement in 1982. He was a member of St. Edwards Catholic Church, Kinde, and a past member of the American Legion Post 499 in Port Austin and the Kinde VFW. He was an avid golfer and sportsman. He enjoyed all sports, including hunting and fishing. Melvin also enjoyed playing cards, traveling and especially his grandchildren. Surviving are his wife, Mary Ann; two daughters, Peggy (Jim) Wisneski of Bay City and Nancy (Arnold) Andreski of Bay City; two sons, Jim (Debra) Schumacher of Port Austin and Bob (Jean) Schumacher of Kinde; nine grandchildren, Doug Wisneski of Grand Rapids, Sheri (Steven) Grocholski of Bay City, Traci (Mark) King of Bay City, Tammi Andreski of Saginaw, Brad Andreski of Bay City, Brain, Kelly and Amber Schumacher of Port Austin, and Ashley Schumacher of Kinde; two great-granddaughters, Taylor and Olivia Grocholski; one step-great-grandchild, Alexandra King; two sisters, Eileen Pelot of Minden City and Virginia (Wilfred) Kroetsch of Minden City; one brother-in-law, Albert (Grace) Bismack of Minden City; several nieces and nephews; three step-sisters, Adelaine Ruby, Virginia Booms and Alice Wruble; and one stepbrother, Archie Wruble. He was preceded in death by one brother, Joseph; three sisters, Eleanor Bismack, Betty Lou Schumacher and Joann. Schumacher; and his stepmother, Nettie Schumacher. Funeral Mass will be Thursday, October 2, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Edwards Catholic Church in Kinde. Fr. Kevin Kerbawy will officiate. Visitation will be Wednesday from 1:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. and Thursday from 9:00 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. at the Knoblock Funeral Home in Kinde.
