She was born on August 3, 1948 in Bad Axe, daughter of John Maurer and the late Helen (Weltin) Maurer. She married John Shemka Jr. on August 23, 1969 at Holy Trinity Parish, Smith Corners. He preceded her in death on August 26, 1989. She attended elementary school at St. Mary's Catholic School of Parisville and was a 1967 graduate of Ubly High School. She attended Northern Michigan University for two years. Janice held a number of different positions including doing the parish bulletin at St. John Parish of Ubly. She worked at Seat Belt, was a clerk at Perry Drug Store, was a salesperson at Sweetheart Bridal in Bad Axe, worked as a secretary at Maurer Builders, and was employed as a secretary for the Huron County Board of Commissioners. She was a "go to person" for all of her younger siblings and would say to them "as all of you know, I am right." She collected china, crystal and jewelry. She enjoyed baking, canning and cooking. She sewed her own wardrobe. She is survived by her daughter, Lori Shemka of Eastpointe; her son, Anthony "A.J." Shemka of Pinckney; her father, John Maurer and his wife, Joan, of Ubly; eight brothers, Benedict Maurer of Ubly, Marcus Maurer of Homer, James Maurer and his wife, Jeannie, of Ruth, John Maurer Jr. and his wife, Diane, of Plymouth, Stephen Maurer and his wife, Carlin, of Bad Axe, Joseph Maurer of Ubly, Glen Maurer and his wife, Melissa, of Chesterfield Township, Gary Maurer of Northeast Grand Rapids; six sisters, Marian Holdwick and her husband, Gene, of Harbor Beach, Theresa Mazure and her husband, Michael, of Port Austin, Lucille Recker and her husband, August, of Ubly, Ann Maurer of Waterford, Carol Maurer of Bloomfield Township, Margaret Maurer of Saginaw; brother-in-law, Bill Herford, of Elkton; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Shemka Jr.; her mother, Helen Maurer; and her sister, Pauline Herford. Funeral mass was celebrated at noon on Saturday, November 2, 2002, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church of Smith Corners. The Rev. John Weis officiated. Burial was in Holy Trinity Cemetery.
