He was 81 years old. Mr. Sparling served 36 years from 1911 to 1947, as Huron County School Commissioner, and he taught school 22 years before assuming that office. Born Sept 29, 1872, in Grindstone City, Mr. Sparling was a lifelong resident of Huron Co. He was educated in Huron County schools and at Central MI College and Ferris Institute. He began his career in 1889 and taught schools in Grindstone City and Bay Port. Mr. Sparling established in 1914 a custom that continues to this day, that of 8th grade commencement services for rural schools. He once estimated that he signed and presented more than 12,000 diplomas during 34 such services. Some graduates in the last years of his service as School Commissioner were grandchildren of graduates of early years. He is survived by his widow, Beatrice; two sons, William J Sparling, Milwaukee, WI; and Robert H Sparling, Jackson, MI; four grandchildren, a great grandchild and a sister, Miss Susie Sparling, Royal Oak. Remains are in Alden A MacAlpine funeral home.
