Jim Hunt of the Huron County Sheriff's Office reports Bryce Emerson Stambaugh was eastbound on Wadsworth Road nearing the Stambaugh Road intersection around 7:45 p.m. when he collided with the train. Stambaugh was pronounced dead at the scene. Tuesday night police spent time looking for skid marks caused by Stambaugh's 1999 Dodge Ram pickup truck as it approached the train tracks. In their search they found a path where the vehicle apparently had left the right side of the roadway and entered the grassy ditch before it struck the train's 28th car. After impact Stambaugh's vehicle was spun around by the train and came to rest facing north. The two-engine Rail America Train out of Vassar had 35 train cars hauling sugar beets when the accident occurred. When police and emergency crews arrived at the scene the train was nowhere around, only Stambaugh's vehicle remained. Police contacted Rail America dispatchers who stopped the train operated by David Allen Kischnick of Vassar. Kischnick told police he was unaware that an accident involving the train had occurred. The Rail America train was stopped just east of Barrie Road. In looking over the train cars, deputies found evidence of red paint and grill pieces of the 1999 Dodge pickup on the 28th train car. Kischnick told deputies the train was traveling at an approximate speed of 7 to 10 mph. Kischnick and the train's conductor, Robert C. Page of Ruth, were not injured. The Bingham Township Fire Department, Central Huron Ambulance and the Michigan State Police assisted at the scene.
