Henry B Van Dyke Bad Axe, March 14 -- Solemn Requiem Mass was chanted this morning in St Thomas Apostle Cath Ch, Detroit for Rev Henry B Van Dyke, 74, former pastor of Sacred Heart ch here and of several missions in Huron County. Pallbearers included Dr J Courtney Fremont and Perry F Fremont, both of Detroit and Earl F Tennant, Bad Axe, all of whom served as altar boys for Fr Van Dyke in Sacred Heart ch. Fr Van Dyke, who died Sat in Mt Carmel Hospital, Detroit, is survived by a brother, William Van Dyke, an attorney who lives in Bloomfield Hills. Fr Van Dyke was ordained in 1903. His first pastorate was assistant at St Mary Cath ch in Jackson, MI. He came to Bad Axe in 1906 and served here until 1918. He also was pastor of the mission of St Columbkille's in Sheridan in 1910 when a resident pastor was appointed. Other charges in Huron County included Kinde, Rapson and Elkton. He built the churches at Rapson and Kinde. He went from Bad Axe to Chelsea, MI and later to Our Lady of Help ch in Detroit. In recent years, he lived in Mt Carmel Hospital of which he was chaplain for several years. Fr. Van Dyke was a member of a pioneer family of his native city of Detroit. Van Dyke Avenue, which no extends from Detroit through the Thumb to Port Austin, is named for his family. Van Dyke School also bears the family name. His grandfather, James A. Van Dyke, was an early mayor of Detroit.
