Two youngsters and another man in the boat were able to cling to the boat until help arrived. Three members of the Detroit Fire dept who have cottages in the area rescued Hugh Sharland, 44, Bad Axe, Robert Tschirhart, 10 and Edward Tschirhart, 6, both of Minden City. The four were in a 14 foot aluminum boat when waves swept over their boat. The boat was swamped and turned over. Sharland said that he threw a life preserver to Yaroch but he failed to try and reach it. It was learned later that Yaroch could not swim. Sharland dove beneath the boat and found the two youngsters pinned beneath it. He brought them out and set them on top of the boat until help arrived. Yaroch had gone under the water by the time he rescued the two boys. Undersheriff Robert Swackhamer and Deputy Teschendorf searched the water for about 30 minutes but were unable to find the body. They were forced to quit the search by the high waves. Dragging is continuing today. He is survived by his wife, Erma, a son, Dennis, 3, and Lorrie, 18 months.
