Zurek, 81, of Ubly passed away Wednesday, January 7, 2004, at Huron Medical Center of Bad Axe. Mary was born October 18, 1922, in Detroit to the late Joseph and Ross (Borycka) Gierlowski. She married Raymond N. Zurek on November 30, 1946, at St. Albertus Church in Detroit. He preceded her in death on Oct. 22, 2003. Mary was a graduate of Northwestern High School in Detroit. She worked at Sanders Candy for eight years, and at Deckerville Die Form for 22 years. Mary and Ray moved to Ubly in 1965. She was the chaplain and a member of the VFW Auxiliary #6965, a member of the TVO Auxiliary, and the Daughters of Isabella Fidelis Regina Circle #608 of Bad Axe. She was a former parishioner at St. Mary Catholic Church in Parisville and a current member of St. Mary Rosary Sodality. She was a parishioner of St. John Catholic Church in Ubly. Mary enjoyed mushroom picking, word search puzzles, cooking, shopping, traveling up to Glennie and visiting with her grandchildren. Mary is survived by one daughter, Rosemarie F. Kociba and her husband, Gerald, of Bad Axe; two daughters-in-law, Grace Zurek-Pohl and her husband, Dave, of Palms, Ilean Learman and her husband, John, of Harbor Beach; eight grandchildren, Michael G. Kociba and his wife, Helen, of Rochester, Kevin P. Kociba and his special friend, Carrie, of Bay City, Brian S. Kociba and his wife, Melodie, of Bad Axe, Jennifer R. Hagedon and her husband, Mike, of Waterford, Kimberly M. Kociba of Bad Axe, Michelle Langenberg of Deford, Mande Franzel and her husband, Tim, of Snover, Kristie Zurek of California; nine great-grandchildren, Brendon, Ashley, and Gabriel Kociba of Rochester, Madison and Logan Kociba of Bad Axe, Cheyanne Kociba of Bad Axe, Channing and Hunter Langenburg of Deford, Zachery Franzel of Snover; one sister, Theresa Stevens of Tennessee; two sisters-in-law, Mary Gierlowski of Sterling Heights, Joan Gierlowski of Ontario, Fla.; one brother-in-law, Henry "Hank" Jakabowski of Avoca; and numerous nieces and nephews. Mary was preceded in death by two sons, Michael R. and Robert J. Zurek; two brothers, Ted and Cass Gierlowski; one sister, Zita Jakabowski; one brother- in-law, Ebb Stevens. Funeral mass will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 10, 2004, at St. John Catholic Church of Ubly. The Rev. T.J. Fleming, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 1:30 to 9:30 p.m. today at the Zinger-Smigielski Funeral Home of Ubly and from 10 to 11 a.m. on Saturday at the church. The VFW Ladies Auxiliary will conduct a service at 6:30 p.m. today. There will be a parish vigil service at 7:30 p.m. today and a joint rosary by the Daughters of Isabella and St. Mary Rosary Sodality at 8:30 p.m. All services will be at the funeral home. Memorials are requested to the Family Discretionary Fund.
